Super Mario Maker 2 is the sequel to Wii U's hit Super Mario Maker, allowing you to step in the creator's role and build your own Mario courses, with a myriad of objects at your disposal. Play-testing is a snap too, being able to freely swap between making and playing your levels at any time. Prefer to play other's creations? There's a whole host of user created content available to download through Course World, with multiple ways to play it!

Is this your first time trying out Mario Maker? Consider checking Yamamura's Dojo, a series of live tutorials hosted by the titular pigeon and his apprentice Nina. They teach you pretty much everything you need to know making levels, so your level won't end up getting mass-Boo'd.

Qiieb4Q.png

Like the previous entry, you can freely swap between Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U styles. This adds elements never before seen in the original games. Want the Angry Sun in Super Mario World or Banzai Bills in Super Mario Bros.? Mix and match to your heart's content!

REfzCpq.png

One of the biggest new features to the game is the addition of a new game style: Super Mario 3D World! Unlike the other four, the level editor resets when you switch to/from it, due to it offering many elements not found anywhere else. Containing Clear Pipes, Beat Blocks, Cat Mario, Piranha Creepers, Meowser, Bullies, and the brand new Koopa Car, this style truly stands out on its own!

lsLfX5g.png

In addition to the 6 course themes from the original games, there 4 new course themes, with their own aesthetics and music to vary things up further. Additionally, each theme has its own night version, with its own aesthetics, music, and even unique mechanics! The number of unique themes has more than tripled from the first game!

The most requested feature from the first game is here! You can use steep or gentle inclines, just drag a piece from one end to the other. They seamlessly blend in with the rest of the ground, making them great for both aesthetic and gameplay purposes!

EhvlKty.png

A fan favorite of Super Mario Bros. 3, the Angry Sun chases Mario throughout the entire level. It won't rest till it gets him, so watch out! Why does the NSMBU version look like it doesn't want to be here? Who knows, but please don't make it more upset than it already is by bringing it up.

onoffswitchsmalleroij5f.gif

Adding basic programming to the game, you can set blue and red blocks to alternate with the press of a button, and make colored treadmills change their direction. The applications for these are nearly endless: blocks, platforms, pathways, walls, you name it!

LQa4F7U.png

Exclusive to the Forest theme, freely control the water level. You can set where it starts, how high it rises, if it falls after rising, and how fast it changes the tide. Enemies will even seamlessly change their physics depending on if they're in or out of water. In the Castle theme, it turns to lava!

TSfzQ9F.png

Exclusive to the 3D World theme, this bad boy lets you drive over nearly anything at high speeds. Goombas, crates, Koopas, spike blocks; nothing can stop you! Well... don't run into walls. Your car can only take a few head-on impacts.

c6aYGuG.png

Based off the Super Mario Challenge in the first game's 3DS version, set special conditions that must be cleared before touching the flagpole. From collecting x amount of coins, to never jumping, to defeating 7 Chain Chomps, there's a lot more possibilities for the levels you can make.

UuqXBDz.png

Auto scrolling levels can be customized far more than ever before. Adjust the trajectory of the scroll and how fast it goes, with up to 10 adjustments per sub-level. Levels can be more dynamic than ever before!

QJyeugk.png

Pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend and build alongside them! Each player gets their own mini item selector to build without getting in the way of others.

Watch the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct to get a small sampling of all the new features this game brings to the field (its linked in the Media section at the bottom of the OT)!

Peach's Castle has been... undone!? Play through over 100 levels made by the experts at Nintendo (and maybe even some Nintendo characters!), learning clever course design on the way. Beating levels gives you coins, which you can use to fund the rebuilding of Peach's Castle. You may also be tasked with collecting materials or rescuing builders... or maybe even healing the wound between the workers and their anti-union boss! Talk to all the characters in the hub world too, there's side jobs for Mario to perform for even more cash!

Pv5VYZw.png
XbTuV31.png

Story Mode also has some mechanics exclusive to it. Levels may force you to carry a heavy stone that restricts your jump height to the goal, or escort a little Toad to the goal without them getting hit. Having trouble with a level? Pressing the minus button at any time during the level will let you access Luigi's Parts, a host of blocks and powerups you can place into the level on the fly, giving you that boost you need to complete it!

5eIlUyG.png

The online component of the game. You can browse all sorts of levels made be creators from around the world, with a new tagging system to sort things like speedrun, autoscroll, and music levels. You can also look through the newest levels or those that are particularly popular. Not only can you play individual courses, but you can also test your might by playing through Endless Challenge: an endless selection of levels sorted by difficulty until you run out of lives. There's even leaderboards to compete in!

Besides playing the levels, you can also reignite your inner Miiverse artist through the comment system! Draw or write a message for other players to see either during the level, or towards the end. There's also Maker Profiles, where you can dress up your own Mii! The more people play your levels, the more parts you unlock for your Mii to wear in your Maker Profile.

tclNKiq.png

What's better than playing Mario Maker alone? Playing Mario Maker with friends! For the first time ever, play Mario levels with up to four players online, with strangers or with friends! You can compete against each other, with the winner being the first to reach the goal, or play together in co-op. You can enjoy multiplayer in local wireless and single system local as well. There's even leaderboards and a ranking system, so you can officially rate your Mario Maker skills!

IGN - 9.5/10
Super Mario Maker 2 does nearly everything better than its already excellent predecessor, keeping the charm of a Mario game while introducing some incredible new ideas.

Kotaku
Nintendo has delivered a much more robust and feature-rich Mario maker, and hope players will use it well.

God is a Geek - 9/10
Despite the multiplayer being slightly underwhelming, the new creation tools, single player story, and addition of Super Mario 3D World make Super Mario Maker 2 a fantastic overall package.

Metro GameCentral - 8/10
Not just one of the most versatile 2D game creation tools on consoles but the best collection of new Super Mario courses since the 90s.

Check out the game's review thread for me details on the game's reception!

Great OT at a glance! So hyped for this, never played a Mario Maker game before. Do most people make levels? I'm not very creative but more interested in playing other people's creations...

Within 48 hours, people are about to discover that Luigi is SMM2's Clippy.

Can't wait. I've already planned my first level.

Themes will be Tight Spaces, Slopes, Lava. So basically a tight level to maneuver where lava will be a constant threat. Thinking of vertical sections of Metroid Escape style. Will be fun!

You know whats gonna feel REALLY weird? Porting stages over from the Wii U to Switch for me. I plan on porting over one really poular level and remaking another one at launch, since my two Prototypes I've made in the Wii U game may take a little while to adjust to Mario Maker 2 mechanics. I swear, having the Wii U pad next to the Switch is some sureal shit. They don't even seem like they're from the same company!

I'm pretty excited despite some of the worrying mechanical changes. Dunno if I can make a level as viral as The Goomba: A Sad Tale of Madness ever again (The stage remake is heavily based on this except without the goomba, and a big new section to give new context to it) but damn it I'll try :P

I already have multiple ideas I'm hoping to turn into reality during the weekend. My main objective is try and do things that were never done in Mario games, or that at least aren't common (I obviously can't say I know every single Mario level, let alone all Maker ones). Concepts completely changing the gameplay.

I've been waiting for this since the Switch was announced, and it's finally almost here! It can't overtake my Smash playtime at this point, but if the original is anything to go by it'll get pretty damn close.

For Asia & Oceania, 7 1/2 hours. For the rest, 21 hours I believe.

And yes, you can post levels here. Considered making a separate thread, but looking at the original's OT gave me... other inspirations.

There's a typo in the Sky theme night description (enter vs. entire) but other than that it's a great OT.
Can't wait to finally play this tomorrow!

I wonder how the Story mode holds up to previous Mario games in terms of level design.

I won't have much time to create levels since I have too many games I wanna play.

So, 21 hours left. I can't wait.
I have enough time to finish Xenoblade Chronicles 2 main story. Don't judge me, I just bought it like a month ago.

Aww, I thought the poll would be for the title.

Hoping Nintendo have clearer policies and treatment of the online community this time?
Klepek's review was good at discussing his concerns.

Excellent OP. Love the banner for the on/off block.

Since this is on the first page, I may update it with my own resources, links, and recommendations at a later date.

Night Ground isn't underwater enemies. Only goombas are like that. Night ground has a bunch of random effects like long chain chomps and chasing boo rings.

In Night Desert the wind is different depending on the style:
  • SMB1 the wind periodically blows left
  • SMB3 the wind periodically blows right
  • SMW the wind periodically switches between left and right
  • NSMBU the wind constantly blows right
In Night Ghost House/Underwater, various enemies and gizmos also give off light. On/Off Switches change the radii of the lights emitted. And certain sound effects like the heavenly light and fireworks light up the stage.

I never played Mario Maker on Wii U.
I am kinda tempted. I mean, it will never be reduced in price so might as well jump in right?

Nice OT!

Question: It's not possible to use just the visual part of a night theme without the special rules, right? Like if you wanted to do a night snow level because you like how it looks, but you don't want slippery physics.

Ist there a block in 3D World theme that disappears after 1 second or falls down after stepping on it? I can't find any.

I swear this new wheel system is so f'n confusing and makes you feel the whole game has like 20 things to place and that's it. Not good at all.

I want to make a domino rally which if you jump once will trigger a series of events which carries Mario to the goal pole. Obvs the easiest level to complete ever but want to get as many elements on as possible.

It's really not confusing at all.

It is if you search something specific. Like I said, you get the feeling there is just a hand full of stuff you can do and that's it, even if you know it has to be somewhere. But you have one small wheel for "environments", one for standard Mario blocks and your going through the tabs over and over and over again. It's not confusing at all, if you want to use stuff that is in this wheel, like ground and enemies and question blocks and stuff, but good luck in finding specific things which are buried under items with a long press or God knows who.

Like I ask, I know falling blocks or lines or something like this exist in other styles, I think, but I'm building in 3D World right now and can't find something like this at all.
