Wii U didn't even outsell Smash 64?

I knew Smash was a beast but this is insane. I was really thinking about it recently, and barring some of the lack of power (for obvious reasons), the Switch is the "perfect" console.

People can utilize the console however they enjoy gaming; on TV, in their hands, set up on a table... they really delivered on that pitch they laid out for us before launch and it's paying off big time for them.

Congrats to another BANGER on Switch!

Imagine buying F-Zero because you like Captain Falcon in Smash and then see that he does not even punch

Does this mean Smash is now the best selling fighting game franchise? That it has blown past Street Fighter and Tekken?

Maybe? To be fair I'm always amazed that Tekken has sold more than Street Fighter.

Smash Bros.: 53.130.000 (minimum) https://bit.ly/2GdnA99

Tekken: 47.000.000 (as of October 2018) https://bit.ly/2To5ghv

This really puts the Wii U's failure into perspective.

Maybe, just maybe, it's time for Sakurai to pass the torch. Splatoon2 still has support and how much time has passed since it released?
If Sakurai can't handle the DLC process i'm pretty sure there's talent in Nintendo to keep with it while the man can have his well deserved vacations.

He said on a famitsu interview just before ultimate released that smash is his baby and if a new one is going to release, he has the job of doing it again. I dont see him passing the torch.

But he has delegated a ton of more repetitivre things like balancing in this one to other people.

Im of the opinion he should have some time between smashes to do work on a new IP or existing one like kid icarus uprising so he can do other creative stuff.

The #1 franchise in fighting games began development as a relatively low-budget Japan-only title.

How many titles even sold 12 million in 2018 ? RDR2, Fifa and Blops 4... Then... Maybe Monster Hunter World ? That's pretty much it right ?

I was one of those who thought Smash wouldn't break the 10M units in its first year, lol I was so wrong. Anyways, game is great. I don't play it that much since I already beat it, but it is the first Smash game I enjoyed for more than 30 minutes, well deserved. Now let Sakurai rest!

I know this getting way ahead, but I have no idea where Nintendo goes from here with the Smash series. It really is the Ultimate Smash, and those sales are completely deserved.

Maybe the successor to the Switch will just have an up-res version with some minor gameplay tweaks.

Or treat it like numbered Street Fighter games & start from scratch for the next entry. I don't get why people think that there's no way forward for Smash after Ultimate. The series prints too much money to drop Smash entirely or just stick to porting the game for years to come.

Ultimate + new gameplay + 10 new characters and 10 new stages

the new smash formula going forward

30 million copies sold every time

If this also the fastest selling console exclusive ever? Considering it surpassed Halo in the December NPD.

So do we count 3DS/Wii U separately? For all intents and purposes they're the same game, so I guess SSB4 is the best selling "generation" of Smash Bros, at 14.7M units?

I wonder if the N64 LTD includes the Virtual Console rerelease?

Thats like Mario Kart tier levels of success. 25 million is in sight as I believe it will sell for a long time with DLC support.

Thats pretty amazing for an exclusive. Its on a level of something like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

It's hard for me to see them starting from scratch, bc I think Ultimate is pretty much perfect. If they change the formula, there's a lot of ppl that are going to be unhappy (and when you're talking about likely the most popular Smash ever that's a lot of ppl disappointed).

I definitely don't think they're dropping the series (and whoever does is crazy), but I lack the imagination to speculate how you make Ultimate better (beyond online infrastructure).

Edit: accidental reply, sorry Sega Dreamcast.

So yeah, can we officially say this is the fastest selling home console exclusive of all time? I'm not sure what other exclusives outside of Nintendo games could compare to these numbers.

At this point, can not this be reported?

In this context I'd first assume that was sarcasm before anything else.
