: ( Pyre flopped? I didn't think it sold millions upon millions, but I'm surprised it sold much worse than Bastion and Transistor did. Looking forward to giving this a go when it launches on PS4.

No that clearly isn't your problem, but something else it. There's other places we're you can discuss it if you want to be a complete jerk. This is for discussion on the game, which you aren't discussing.
What are you talking about?
The guy implicitly suggested that I should be forging of a lesser service because the competitors took years to get to a certain point.
I stand my point: that's not my problem as a final user and I should't care for that. If you want to enter the market now and sell to me you should have an up-to-date competitive service.

I suspect Supergiant's games sales has been decreasing with each game, so Bastion > Transistor > Pyre, so I'm not surprised if this time they have chosen to do something less... eclectic as a fantasy sport/VN thing and more commercial, like an action/roguelite game. Hell, even the dude looks more commercial:

Just gave the game about an hour.

I gotta say, Supergiant has a way with words -- the writing is always sharp, thoughtful, and tonally pitch-perfect with the acting here. The core gameplay loop here is probably going to be familiar to anyone who has some experience in the whole "randomly-generated rooms with bad guys where you die over and over and grow stronger and (more patient) through excess personal bloodshed" genre. It's the character and charm of Supergiant's take on this kind of thing that keeps the (currently) simple combat from becoming a bit of a chore as you grind through and ultimately die. And the game *does* want you to die, since it's where the best character moments occur, and -- big surprise -- the narrative reveals itself, slowly pulling back layers and layers of little character tidbits every time you fuck up in your journey.

I kinda love it, and it reminds me why I started paying attention to these guys and gals after they delivered Transistor.

I'm missing the more strategic elements of Pyre, though, and while the narrative strengths are apparent here, I also kind of miss the indulgence of the writing. But, hey, I get it -- the "hardcore" formula is going to appeal to the Souls/Rogue-lite peeps. I think they'll be plenty happy with all the stat-boosting items, dodging mechanics, and weapon variety / differences. It's not all here in that regard, but it's not hard to see how this game gets bigger over time with more weapons and the like.

I'm definitely going to spend some time with the game yet, and one really cool thing: when you start the game, on the right side of the main menu is a bit label letting you know that the next content update for the game is coming in 39 days. That's one of the nicest features I've seen in an early access game -- an in-game note of when to expect more.

edit: I'll add my take on the process of getting here, which is of course Epic's new storefront.

I already had access to the store, since I (occasionally) play Fortnite. To me, it's a bit insane that Epic has the finances to start offering people free games, snatch up some pretty decent temporary exclusives, and have Fortnite $$$ all in their corner, but can't offer a store that 1) provides user reviews, or 2) provides a refund policy. Accepting that the design of the storefront, usability, and features scale with investment, with the benefit of Steam as a hindsight measure, it should be better than this. I don't have the same reservations here some people do (I feel as though I'm using so many different DRM / stores at this point, that what the fuck does it matter to add one more to the pile?), but I absolutely sympathize with people who don't want to jump into this game because of the controversy surrounding the store right now. Unfortunate situation, and I hope the deal with Supergiant and Epic is a good one for SG, because this game deserves exposure and sales even in this early state, imo.

I'll explain it to you: supporting this behavior is an endorsement to repeat it more and more as we go.

I won't tell others what they should do, but I know what will be my course of actions: to ignore all these money-hatted exclusives on a single store and to hope for the games that did it to underperform commercially, so they will be forced to reconsider.

Do you want to compete with the market leader? Fine, give me a service I'll have good reasons to prefer to it.
Better prices, more tools, more options, Linux support and what else.
So you wish developers have lower sales of their games because they decided to put their game on a storefront as an exclusive. Even if it's a timed exclusive, they still deserve to underperform commercially?

Yes.
I wish for initiatives that are actively detrimental to my interest and convenience as a customer to not be successful, so they will be reconsidered over time.
If you want to find that strange for some bizarre reason, be my guest.

I loved it but Pyre was a little too exotic for most people.

Its a little telling that the trailer didnt even bother to mention Pyre alongside Bastion and Transistor.

Zero interest as long as it is exclusive to the shitty Epic launcher. I'm fucking done splitting game purchases all over on PC. GOG, Steam, Origin and Uplay is enough already. I barely tolerate the last two and only use Origin for old EA games from when they still made games of interest to me. Uplay I only use for entering a deeply discounted key for the occasional Ubi game.

Really sad to see Supergiant signing for this disgusting store exclusivity as well. I really hope PC gamers vote with their wallets against this.

I like how they pretend that Steam hasn't had a proven early access program for years. It would be nice if developers would be more honest and just explain the financial and marketing incentives offered for their exclusivity but that's probably a violation of their contract.

Damn, I liked the trailer and I thought it was a linear adventure game like Bastion and Transistor... the roguelike/procedural stuff really unsold me... what a bummer :/

I think these devs are severely overestimating the hype surrounding their games. None of these are killer apps. We're not talking about massive AAA games here. We're talking about small indie games that most people have never even heard of.

I'm almost certain that Epic has promised to provide cross-promotion with Fortnite. That's really the only reason to even consider exclusivity.

I think the locality of having the Epic Launcher AKA the-only-place-to-play-Fortnite sharing virtual real-estate with your dinky 20 dollar indie game basically *is* the cross-promotion. And, frankly, if they plan to also launch on Steam later, it may not be that big of a deal: By the same logic, they aren't gonna lose out on would-be buyers just because the game was on some other platform for a couple months, so that Fortnite proximity could be worth its weight in gold.

Time will probably be a better judge than my estimation. I see it almost exclusively as a "be under the same umbrella as the biggest thing right now" play.

From the kids I know that play Fortnite ... none of them do so on PC. They are 100% mobile/console. Now they are trying to target the core audience (let's be real, stuff like Ashen and Hades are only interesting to a niche audience) but offer a shit platform, a shit service and we as consumers are expected to eat that shit. Fuck that, I'll consider getting this game when it releases on GOG/Steam.
Also fuck people like Supergiant selling out. There will be no Linux version until they release on Steam and probably not even then.

Pretty sure Epic gave Supergiant a huge cheque for store exclusivity. I really don't mind games to be on multiple storefronts, on the contrary. But moneyhatting devs to keep their games away from other storefronts is a disgusting practice that I won't support. Hades will be the first Supergiant game that I won't buy.

I love Supergiant Games. Bastion and Transistor are among my all time favorites, loved the stories and gameplay in them. Liked the story in Pyre, but the gameplay wasn't doing it for me.

Not really a fan of roguelites, and the narrative isn't really wowing me as I thought it would when I first saw "Supergiant Games" flash at the reveal. The art looks stunning though, but I'll just wait for it to leave early access and inevitably hit Steam eventually.

Fantastic artstyle as usual but a bit tired of the isometric view. Transistor and Pyre had original gameplay, this one seems more straightforward.

If i couldn't get into Dead Cells very much, but love Supergiant games. Is this worth it for me? Dead Cells just was a bit too barebones narrative wise and running through the same locations got too repetitive for me. I'm afraid Hades is probably like that but I just love their art, music and narrative. It's a pickle because Epic don't have refunds...

There is far more narrative focus to Hades than there is in Dead Cells. The core gameplay loop is fairly similar though.

Wtf where did this come from? Transistor's one of my favourite games and Pyre was awesome!

Not gonna play it in early access, though, I want the complete and finished experience. And might even wait for it to come to a certain Japanese handheld console..

I find their games to be visual and artistic masterpieces, but lacking in gameplay hooks and appeal. Bought every one of their games and have yet to finish any of them. Hopefully, this bucks the trend. As I'm a sucker for punishment, I'll be buying this too :)

This is a business. Don't act like it's anything different. They chose a shit retailer, they gotta live with the consequences.
Sad to see them take this route especially considering this shafts Linux users. But if they decide they don't want me as a customer, why the fuck should I care for them?

I appreciate your honesty, but bear in mind that you're literally saying you want the developer to get a smaller amount of your money due to the developer store cut percentage difference, which is indirectly detrimental to your interest as a consumer, since it helps kill off developers you presumably like.

lol do you even understand what a walled garden is dude? Seemingly not.
Having to launch the Steam launcher to play Hades vs having to launch the Epic launcher to play Hades is the exact same thing, except in the latter case Supergiant get more money for each sale and also don't have to deal with Steam BS.
EDIT: If your point is "Oh well they paid Supergiant for exclusivity which Valve would never do!!!"; consider how few PC stores this game would show up in that aren't Steam if the Epic store had not existed. MAYBE GOG and that's it. So it may as well have tacitly been a Steam exclusive but with fewer developer-friendly benefits. This game will come out to other platforms eventually, chill.

And with Steam BS, you mean Linux and Mac Support, universal controller support, big picture mode, competing 3rd party keystores, in-home streaming, Steam Workshop, trading cards etc? Damn, what a relief!

Keep in mind that you are literally saying (well, implying) that being fine with the developer settling for "merely" the standard 70% cut out of every sale is equivalent to starving them to death.
A bit hyperbolic, honestly.

Especially since 88% of X sales isn't in any way better than 70% of X sales multiplied for N times.

I can give you a list of games that implement 0 Steam DRM checks and as such, can be launched without even having Steam on.
Also, it will never be the same thing because Steam offers plenty more features than Epic.

Also, tell me what "Steam BS" is that
