This is some awful logic and also doesn't explain why he's a white dude.

Though the answer to that is fairly obvious.

Hopefully he is a gay at least or you have a choice in love interests if that is a part of the game

I cannot even begin to describe how happy it'd make me to finally, finally see a canonically gay male character in the lead role of a 'AAA' video game but it feels like we're still a decade or more away from that. If gamer boys can't even handle a woman, a gay male would send them all supernova.

Also, if the alien was just designed to be more expressive, then that would go a long way to making them more relatable.

It can work.

That's what makes them terrible aliens

I disagree. I mean, the designs aren't wild and outlandish, but I don't think that is a necessary criteria to being a "good" alien. I kind of like the idea that humanoid species around the universe all ended up being the ones to advance far enough to be able to travel in space.

By that logic, someone designing the next SW game should make the next protagonist a woman. That sounds good to me, so let's get on it!

I wish I could link to the San Andreas reveal thread in the old place, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to
I remember one old thread where an individual was complaining about how they couldn't connect to the protagonist of Cosmic Star Heroine because she was female, but apparently didn't have any issues with the developers previous game where you play as

wait for it

Ummm... there's an incredibly long tradition of anthropomorphized non-human characters that are HIGHLY beloved and related to by millions/billions of people around the world. Think of the animation industry (Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Toy Story, Wall-E), the video game industry (Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, frankly Mario), and even Star Wars itself (people fucking love R2D2 and it's a trash can that beeps).

Super lame cop-out. With a small investment into character design, they could have created a classic iconic non-human protagonist, and in doing so could have avoided any (rightful) criticism around gender, race, ethnicity, etc.

It's a shame they didn't make Cal as one of aliens. This could be interesting if he would belong the other humanoid race like Kel Dor, Zabrak or Twi'lek. Star Wars galaxy is so rich and diverse with different races, so it baffles me why they are so afraid of using them in a role of main protagonists.

I can understand that decision being made at a conceptualization stage. They're making a story about a young Jedi and want to distance themselves from Rey. Then BB-8 is spherical, so go with something blocky for a companion droid design.

I'll just be happy if we get a decent Star Wars game. That seems like such a tall, tall order these days.

The reasoning behind the decision sounds quite odd though. No idea why you would offer that in an interview. It doesn't make much sense.

I'm going to have to look that up. I remember the reaction being one of extreme excitement among my circle of friends (mostly white, asian, hispanic American teens). After Vice City, we were pumped to see a GTA inspired by movies like Boyz N the Hood.

"But there's already one girl!" is not it, chief.

The guy who wrote the game thinks TLJ butchered Luke and constantly criticizes the movie.

In that case maybe it's better they didn't waste a female/POC protagonist on this, if the writer doesn't understand how character works.

...And? Many longtime Star Wars fans agree with him. Nothing wrong with that.

"Many" is a stretch. They're just loud. And wrong.

Also, I think that a non-human protag would be more interesting than a human one. The Empire was known for being racist towards non-humans and making a non-human protag opens up a new avenue for the narrative. And I also think that we already have sooooo many major characters who are human Jedi.

They want to distance themselves from Rey yet we didn't even know shit about the protagonist (or the game) until a few months ago, and Rey's last movie releases this December lolololol.

Kind of missed the boat on stealing Rey's shine, considering she's been around for nearly 4 years now.

Not gonna lose sleep over which gender or race the protagonist is. If the protagonist is well-written and performed, then they naturally fit in the game in my book. Honestly, Star Wars is pretty diverse in main characters with Battlefront 2 and the current SW trilogy having women being the lead. There's also the multitude of alien species taking the lead in extended universe stories. Not to mention the autonomy of choice in the Kotor games. I think Jedi Fallen Order's going to be fine and the creative decision of who the protagonist is honestly isn't worth a debate over. I'm simple. Tell me a good story with good characters behind it.

The guy who wrote the game thinks TLJ butchered Luke and constantly criticizes the movie.

If this is true (a link or more detailed breakdown would be good), then my interest in the game honestly just dropped several notches. On the one hand, there's room for a lot of opinions in writing like this, but on the other, I personally can't even begin to relate to that conclusion, and it happens to also be completely consistent with the reactionary talking points of MRA/alt-right slime out there.

Add that to the rationale here, which amounts to "we wanted a human character so audiences would relate to them, [therefore] the only rational choice was a white male lead, and there can be no more women in Star Wars," and I don't particularly want to engage that that writing for my entertainment.

I mean at least he is honest, that is ropey logic. That thinking has never been in place when balancing the far higher number of male protags. Of couse, males have generally been far more prevalent as gamers of a certain type, but that has significantly changed.

No reason it could not be a black dude though. This lead looks generic as fuck.

Still could be well written and interesting though. Remember when Arthur Morgan was first relieved?

So why do you think having more would take the spotlight away from Rey? That was my entire point. Rey won't suddenly be minimized, because she's the lead of the new Episodes. No game protagonist is going to change that

Rey right now is the last jedi to the known galaxy.

people at respawn said that they couldnt tell much about this dude because disney has plans for him so he probably will appear in other media.

sum that with probably asoka returning and this being a female protag, then you have the las 3 jedis being women.

and i mean that would be awesome, but i get why they did this.

Regarding the Rey comment, I sort of have a feeling it may be an edict "from above" at Disney or LucasFilm as to not steal any thunder from Disney's primo cash cow trilogy but Sig doesn't want to pass the buck.

Be that as it may, I don't agree with Sig personally and would welcome any non-human SW race. I really think he's off the mark with aliens. Heck, even a droid, though in this franchise droids get marginalized since they can't be Force users and are typically relegated to supporting cast. Someday, our robotic friends, someday...

I don't think it's about taking away the spotlight from Rey. I think it's about them presenting their character as 'not Rey', or not appearing as a Rey copycat.

It's a Jedi story and that puts it in direct comparison with Rey's story.

I think that fear about alien protagonists will endure forever. Not even because of Jar Jar (the last time they really tried to "feature" an alien character, along with Maul in the same film), but just because they're going to want to put all of their big stars on screen as naturally as possible.

Though then again Disney lets Marvel have characters like Gamorra/Nebula/Thanos.

this sounds like a ad-hoc PR response in order to skirt around the fact that they deliberately chose a white dude.

Battlefront 2 has a female protagonist.

They allowed a female protagonist in Rogue One. They allowed one in Battlefront 2. I don't understand why another one would be stealing Rey's thunder all of a sudden

The guy being white isn't even the problem IMO (not that I wouldn't dig him not being white). It's the fact that he's white in a generic as fuck way. There are plenty of ways to add character and dimension to anyone of any ethnic descent but the designers here went for the "Aiden Pearse's Iconic Hat" approach and it shows.

Oh look another thing for people to be outraged about. I'm perfectly fine with the character choice. Also glad they didn't do some alien character.

Pretty much. Or it is just EA being EA. I'm willing to bet their only contact with reality are market studies.
