Yep. Unfortunately the reality is we have a company sitting on a goldmine of old games who is too incompetent to do anything with them.
It's definitely not a good look, especially if you're going to use Xbox as bullet points on why Nintendo's online service isn't too great. And I do think that Jim is a good journalist, so these errors are kind of weird.
Though I do think it shows that he doesn't play his Xbox much. Jim, let me have your One X!
Doing things differently and ending up a financial success, it's the Nintendo way, don't get me wrong things like voice chat annoy the hell out me, but works for themYou said Nintendo doing things different than the competition works out for them financially. That's a fallacy. The Switch isn't successful because it offers no way to back up your saves, or because you need to use a phone to use voice chat. It's successful despite those things. That's clearer, I hope.
So incompetent that they are killing itYep. Unfortunately the reality is we have a company sitting on a goldmine of old games who is too incompetent to do anything with them.
Pissing contest? They're charging money for a lackluster service that the customer has to jump through hoops to get certain parts of it working correctly. It's a crappy service.
Perfect answer
Oh no, we got free online for a year. How infuriating.Perhaps most infuriating is the fact that they delayed it for over a year to come up with the same crap as initially announced, with big words from Reggie and co. they wanted to make the service perfect. What was the delay even for?
Mhm! I'm slightly envious of that fact hahaIt's not a good look, and he got one of those bloody reviewer kits as well!
Also it's weird how Jim is decrying the death of Virtual Console (despite admitting that it was a shit service) and saying it was wasted potential and should've been like a Netflix-styled catalog for old games... even though that's pretty much exactly what they're setting up this new feature as. It makes him sound more like he's just annoyed about the death of the branding. Jim complaining about "fucking Ice Climbers" is like, the answer staring right down at his face. No one is going to buy that game for $5 a pop. That goes for a large majority of game on the Virtual Console service. But as a "free" download? They might actually try it out and you got nothing to lose on that. Hell, with some online play on top it's probably one of the most forward thinking emulation services I can imagine and is easily going to make it preferable over the NES/SNES Classic in a lot of ways.
I'm not buying the service, but I can voice how much the service sucks in hopes it changes in the future.
The defense force is getting lazy. #14 replies before coming in. I'm disappointed.
Hey, deciding which games of the last century they wanted to give us takes time.Perhaps most infuriating is the fact that they delayed it for over a year to come up with the same crap as initially announced, with big words from Reggie and co. they wanted to make the service perfect. It makes complete sense, it's other factors that make Nintendo successful, as least as far as the Switch is concerned, despite how badly they manage features that the industry expects as standard by now.
This kind of answer doesn't make sense in a thread where people are rightfully looking out for value from a company that has yet to catch up in features that are standards in the industry, unless of course you were an investor or someone who only cared about Nintendo's products selling regardless of the value they offer.

This is the old price fallacy. You're not saving $40, youre spending $20, and considering that online play has been free for a year already with the phone based voice chat, I'm going to pay $20 for what exactly? A warmed over copy of nes soccer? That's the only new addition here, and it's shit.
Nintendo Switch is successful period. Unless you have surveys on hand indicating strong consumer dissatisfaction about the issues you are mentioning, you can't really use the term "despite".You said Nintendo doing things different than the competition works out for them financially. It isn't weak, the price is good for what is offered. The save file being cloud only is another problem, Nintendo should give us an option to to backup saves without relying on the internet.

Maybe most Switch users just don't give a crap. We don't know. What we know is that it sells really well.
And to be clear, I'm not saying those complaints are not legitimate. But they sell gangbusters and as such speaking about "bad business decisions" is nonsense.
Edit: And as others have said:
Nah, it's weak.It isn't weak, the price is good for what is offered. The save file being cloud only is another problem, Nintendo should give us an option to to backup saves without relying on the internet.
There's no excuse for a giant tech company to be ignorant about the internet.I wouldn't say it makes them look weak. Ignorant of modern expectations for online? Yes. Weak? No, Nintendo isn't worried with how well it's selling. It is an issue that needs to be fixed though.
And it was a goddamn travesty then too. What's with all the yeah but Sony does it too talk? We hate that Sony got away with this shit too.Online play was free on PS3 and wasn't on PS4. And you don't even get a copy of NES Soccer.
Nintendo have said since the launch of the Switch that online multiplayer would eventually become a paid service. It says it on the back of game boxes such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2.If Nintendo had this service ready to go day 1 I don't think I'd really have all that big of an issue with it. Us as consumers would know exactly what we were getting for the price. But how they've gone about this is ethically shady. Online heavy games (Mario Kart, Splatoon 2) will have been out for over a year by the time this releases and they are losing significant value by gating functionality behind a paywall that didn't exist when they were released.
Of course. I should have added "it sells really well for now", but it seemed redundant.Judging success on unit sell-through is not as clear cut as it once was - particularly based on a single year on the market. The modern industry is more nuanced. Whether Nintendo can sustain success and growth without fully embracing a more online-focused model (which drives a huge chunk of modern gaming revenue for competitors) remains to be seen. If anyone can manage it, it would be Nintendo, but only time will tell.
