Back in March this year, Nintendo released firmware 5.0. Among the changes, were a software solution to the Switch, making soft modding the console very difficult and currently not possible. However, it could do nothing about the hardware vulnerability now famously found in the Tegra X1. Part of the 5.0 firmware update, hidden deep in it's code, was reference to a new custom Tegra chip, the T214 "Mariko". We have no other information to go on, but what was found about these new Switch model, is that it is no longer vulnerable to the hardware issue, but is not using a new Tegra chip.

The new custom Tegra chip found in firmware 5.0, is not to solve hardware vulnerability, and this leaves us with a burning question... Why is a firmware released in Spring this year, referencing new a new Switch SoC? Is there a new iteration of the Switch coming soon?

One last note for those who do want to dig into their Switch, these new "fixed" models, launch with 4.0.1, which is still vulnerable to software modding, but will likely ship with 5.0 eventually, so if you are into the scene, you should try to pick one up before that happens.
