We heard earlier today that Switch was again the best-selling console in the United States. That piece of information was more important than initially thought, as the system has set a new record.

Following what took place in September, Switch has been the best-selling console in the U.S. since December 2018. That marks 22 consecutive months that this has happened, and a new record has been set. The Xbox 360 previous held the record with 21 consecutive months, which took place between August 2011 and April 2013.

Nice, but how the heck doesn't PS2 have this record? I followed NPD back then and the only time I recall PS2 losing was during the Halo 2 launch. I guess there was a month or two in there where it lost that broke the streak?

One of Nintendo portables had the edge some months as well

Finally bought one (and an Animal Crossing themed unit no less) after drooling over the console since launch! They really nailed it with this, its reactivity and portability are just really fun and responsive.

GBA was really big while it was on the market

Yeah, PS2 had to deal with a more robust handheld market, with both GBA and DS very strong in the US market.

Also, isn't Super Mario 3D AllStars the biggest launch ever for 3D Mario in the US (1.1 million copies retail only)? Id make a thread, but it's gonna end up like the Sword/Shield sales success threads so nah.

oct/nov/dec are also likely to extend the record for switch. while the launches on the new consoles will be big, switch's holiday sales are expected to absolutely massive.
The only real chance is November. New consoles dip in December usually due to lack of stock. November will be huge for Switch and the new consoles have a big cost advantage because NPD goes off of revenue, but it'll really come down to how many Switches, how many PS5/XSX and how many PS5D/XSS.

Are you sure about that? I don't think that's a given.
Literally no chance it ends in October before the new consoles come out, and even once we hit November there's the whole stock issue. That said it might still lose to the new consoles since NPD uses revenue and not unit sales so next gen costing so much more does make this a challenge

Just depends how many systems are available in the US. All 4 next gen systems are going to sell out, so if they ship a shit ton they will ultimately sell more than Switch I would imagine, at least for a month.
Depends? I don't think there's a chance Sony or MS ship more consoles than Nintendo this holiday season.

Well earned. The first year after Zelda and Mario it was a dust collector for me, but after that slump I play it all the time.

Not huge surprise for Switch. What I didn't expect was 360 was the previous record holder?! Wow.

360 dominated that gen in the states for a while.

Honestly, Don Matterik (whatever his name is) absolutely fucked them coming off of that system.

The Switch had a good run, but I expect it to be in 3rd place later this year when next-gen starts. Hell of a streak though.

I'm not sure people realise just how well Switch is selling currently.

They're going to be close to doubling the PS4's best year this year.

Uh, yeah, with the next-gen hype I can see Switch not placing #1 for some months.

New hardware sells.

Next gen consoles might not even outsell Switch next month. The race this holiday will be extremely close.

As an example, Xbox One sold 909,132 copies in its launch month (nine days counted). Switch will sell close to if not over double that.

Every console will sell out this holiday, including Switch, which has effectively been sold out since March.

I expect Switch to be #1 in unit sales in November, but likely #2 (or even #3) in revenue.
