The Stussining
I expected this to happen one day a few years ago when it was clear that Sony were going to heavily reduce any remaining focus on japan. Still it is a bit wild that it has finally happened.

I'm a big Nintendo fan and while this is a milestone… one company having an effective monopoly on the market is not usually a good thing.

While the Switch is a very strong console for Nintendo in Japan, this has just as much to do with Sony essentially deciding to abrogate the market, and this was the natural conclusion. :/

Sony absolutely abandoned Japan, and I do wonder if that was a mistake.

i remember sitting with a couple people from playstation just a week before switch launched. horizon: zero dawn had just come out and the discussion was mostly about that - but because breath of the wild was launching just a few days away, the conversation shifted a bit. one of the playstation guys was like 'ah nintendo? who cares' (because wii u) and the other one was shaking his head and lamented the impending/ongoing death of the vita and how he felt it ceded a lot of power over to nintendo because the portable gaming space was the major place for traditional hardware in japan.

welp, here we are in 2021 seeing just some of what that did. but it was just the start. 2017 still had the ps4, which was part of this ecosystem that started with psp + ps2 and continued through to ps3 + psp, ps3 + psp + psv, ps3 + psv + ps4, and then psv + ps4 before just being ps4-only. 2021 has a dead ps4 on the market and a nonexistent ps5. unlike 2013, there isn't a successor to a successful handheld line to ride. ps5 is going to be the place for major aaa games in japan, and it will get games that also come to switch, but it's not going to be a market that grows for sony. it'll only be one that gets smaller.

This is surprising but kind of not at the same time. Nintendo has their finger on the pulse of the Japanese market.

Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. Never shown better than here.

First time happened with Famicom (NES) in November 1988, with the Top 30 titles being the Famicom titles only. This is the second time a single platform dominated the Top 30 charts.

Yeah, 2 times under Nintendo's belt.
How did the Mega Drive and PC Engine get shut out of the entire top 30? Mega Drive was still in launch month.

May I ask what the top 30 was in 1988? I imagine Super Mario 3 was on there

This is more on Sony's side than Nintendo doing shady stuff.

Nintendo is releasing stuff that Japanese people want while Sony just straight up abandoned the market.

Absolutely wasn't insinuating that they were doing anything shady. And I know that Sony abandoned the region, I've seen the threads and the sales trends over the years since the PS3.

But Nintendo doesn't do well when they have no competition historically. Granted, this is one region but it's also one they pay a lot of attention to because it's their home market. Maybe nothing bad will happen but this feels like a potential monkey-paw situation.

Sony really just up and abandoned Japan save for the moneyhatted AAA Square game, it's a far cry from the psp, how sad.
