Another stat I can give out. There were 5.16 million units of hardware sold in December 2018. Switch was just over 1/3rd of that. Nintendo total was 2.8m incl 3DS and NES/SNES Classic.

Data from Nintendo of America and tweets from our very own, Daniel Ahmad.

  • 5.6M in 2018 (up 16%)
  • Best selling platform of the year
  • 10.5M total as of December 2018 in NA
  • Launch aligned, Switch hardware sales are 22% higher than PS4 and 34% ahead of Xbox One
  • Nintendo took 55% of the hardware market share in December
  • 2.8M between 3DS, Classic systems, and Switch
  • Switch is 18% up year over year in December
  • Nintendo was the top publisher of 2018 in the US. The last time Nintendo was #1 was in 2009.
  • When ranked by individual SKU's, 4 Nintendo games appeared in NPD's top 10, with 19 in the top 50.

Impressive, I still remember the bad impressions it had after the January 2017 reveal haha.
This year will be a big one as well with a proper Pokémon and Animal Crossing.

So I guess the whole "Switch win in December NPD is not too impressive since it competes with 5 yr old systems" just got a lot more difficult to make lol.

Congrats to Nintendo. What a success story the Switch has been for them. And with Animal Crossing and new Pokemon this year this is just the beginning.

I visited about 3-4 friends' places during the holiday season and all of them had Switches.

The kicker is that none of them are very big gamers.

very cool

it was $300 out the gate right? I wonder if that has anything to do with how it's already been doing better

Best move for Nintendo was to fuse their handheld and console together. The Switch is just getting started.

Very impressive!

All of Nintendo's major first party titles on one system is paying off greatly.

And we have Pokemon to look forward to this year.

Awesome numbers for Nintendo and good to see do well again.
It's not really a fair comparison to PS4 and XB because they launched at higher prices but either way still great numbers.

I bought 2 Switches in Decmber, would've bought 2 more if there were more Pokemon/Diablo bundles.

So even the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in December? Sony must've blown their load with the $199 November bundles.

The more impressive thing is Nintendo being the no.1 publisher of 2018 in the US.

But GAF/ERA told me two years ago, Switch is doomed because it has no teraflops.
