This is the kind of shit that makes it harder to tackle the real issues and gives ammo to idiots to keep disregarding them.

Some stuff should stay inside the house.
Now, of course, one may say, hey Beyoncé didn’t invent marching band performances. That is a common misconception. If you turn your history books to page 4, you’ll see that in the year 44 B.B.C. (Before BeyChella), a BeyVenger found a tesseract known as the BeyHive Stone in the Coachella crypts. Beyoncian lore says that at the snap of a finger — on beat, mind you, unlike her copycat successor — King Beyoncé ruled that on April 21, 2018 the world would finally be ready for a proper wig-snatching.
The Root should have invented a #DemThrones hashtag for Taylor jokes.

I've always thought of marching bands as like, the whitest thing imaginable. Could be wrong. In any case this is too woke.

Well damn. My wife (white) was in marching band and I (black) was not.

We fucked up.

This goes beyond petty pop stanning and is a cultural issue that can be hijacked by the anti-SJW crowd, which is why I thought it was worth covering.

Please don't use petty pop stan bullshit as a stand in for social commentary, thank you.
also, this bullshit on social media does nothing but make things harder for POC trying to escape the alt-right fuckery going on lately. i guarantee they'll use this as ammo, probably make taylor swift into some goddess-hero meme, and maybe 3-4 months down the road we'll see van jones on CNN talking about how "is playing taylor swift music identifying with white supremacy?"

to those thinking this is far fetched, these are the same losers using this as ammo that are trying to hijack the "OK" sign and worshiping a cartoon frog

Writers get paid by the story and get more jobs based on clicks. This article is a prime example.

I thought it was a joke about how her performance was similar to Beyoncé’s

What happened? 😮

The majority of the links in the OP are making fun of Taylor Swift for possibly copying Beyonce's Coachella performance/the performance in Beyonce's new Netflix special. None of the people the OP posted are genuinely saying using marching bands in performances is a form of cultural appropriation. But the "outrage culture is getting out of hand" train has left the station so... ~shrug~
As long as Era can have its own outrage thread about another perceived outrage...

This got me on the mood for Hollaback Girl and i'm loving it.

Anyway. Wish people would have the care not to make fun of "woke" and the associated vocabulary because they're contributing to the same kind of dismissive nature that interested parties will ensure becomes how most people see these words. These publications, whatever their understanding of what Taytay did, can obviously fall towards a kind of hubris that hurts their message, the kind that i don't think can be asked of any person to consistently avoid. Especially from publications whose safest texts are already victims of disbelief and accusations of craziness. One should be very wary of going at them at the same time white supremacists and otherwise conveniently opined "allies" trying for "common-sense" do.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Marching bands are black culture!?

Can someone explain this to me? I've always associated marching bands with rich white kids personally.
I was in one of the top 3 marching bands in my state, and we had a few minorities, but were mostly white and lower-middle class. Our biggest rival was a more wealthy school, but they were probably about 30 to 40 percent black (they were also consistently better than us, lol). It really depends of the makeup of the school.

Those takes in the OP on this being cultural appropriation are quite stupid. They're being divisive for the sake of being divisive.

Woof.

Well, at least we all know what anti-SJW Youtube is going to shriek about for the next two weeks.

Can't wait for the Shaun video response.

It's dumb fake outrage like this from "woke" white people on Twitter that fuels the alt right.
Indeed, it always does far more harm than any ‘good’.

Tbh, some of these “woke” outrages are getting so outlandish that they’re beginning to sound like they’re coming from those sorts.

Half expecting people to decry mixed race relationships or something at some point in an attempt to be ‘Uber progressive’.

She probably is a snake but this isn't it B. They need to stop looking for shit to throw and using Bey as an excuse.

I can totally see this as stealing ideas from Beyonce... but how that turns into cultural appropriation or gentrification... Those words have meaning, and it really deludes it.

Call Swift out for stealing ideas, call her classless, etc etc. There are tons of REALLY GOOD WORDS to use for this behavior without destroying the meaning of other ones.

(edit) Looking at other things posted in the thread, it's probably just a coincidence? Either way, this was still really silly.

Yes there are events where marching bands do battle. There are colleges where the marching bands are more famous then the sports teams.

this already happens. all the time. and it's disgusting. in fact, it never stopped from the old days.. you know back when America was "great"?

the "woke media" is driving us back to segregation, and those too rooted into social media to care about anything besides egging it on eat it up. everyone picks their side and we all play tug-o-war over... our society? it's sad.

I feel like marching bands would be in the top 50 list of whitest things that exist.

The other main dude form N-Sync JC Chasez had a marching band song from the movie Drumline in 2004 same year as Gwen. Marching bands were all the rage in 2004.
