I'm watching streams with my friend in this and Battlefield, and I've never realized how much I say "like" :/

Or how deep and goofy my voice is really.

A TF2 update and a ResetEra community spotlight in the same week? It can't be a coincidence.

Shame that I see a lot of redundancy in the new cosmetics, and, ugh, Jojo meme garbage.

But you can now set your HUD damage colour in the advanced options. I'm ever closed to not needing any HUD tweaks whatsoever.

Going back to the old Axtinguisher would probably be just fine, to be honest, but I can't really complain about this permutation.
It also kinda hurts to see Valve mention things like Pyro's lack of mobility, speaking as a det jockey in a previous life.

> Sketchek's Bequest

man that's a name i haven't heard in a long time

I have to wonder if the TF2 team forgot that the solider already has an eagle cosmetic.

Yeah naming the new Axtinguisher mechanic Sketchek's Bequest is really touching on the part of Valve.

For those who don't know Sketchek was a Pyro Youtuber who used the puff and sting method who stopped making videos due to a terminal illness.
Bequest was his final video:

I've played around with the new Axtinguisher and it seems fairly decent now. The powerjack still needs a nerf since it's still clearly the best pyro melee.

Powerjack will always be the best melee as long as it has the speed boost. TF2 isn't very melee-focused so for most classes a passive utility weapon will be better than one with more combat value.

Honestly Valve should probably do some sort of rework to the melee weapons. One thing I've been thinking of is giving the default melees give you a small speed boost while deployed (maybe 10-15% max) and not have the speed boost on any of the non default melees (aside from some stuff like the GRU or Eyelander after it gets heads) as a way to balance their extra abilities compared to stock. The only issue is the Spy and Engie who are going to have their melees out way more often than other classes so I don't know what you would do about them or if they make the idea completely nonviable.

Wait, they added another eagle cosmetic for Soldier?

Why?

Edit: lol they don't conflict. And the new one is HUGE

Sunk thousands of hours into this game. Although it's hard to say how many of those were spent in idling servers, surely over 100. So many fond memories in cp_blackmesa_final.

Can anyone remember the other modes that used to be available on classic?

Assassination/Escort
Murderball
And maps where you had to work together as a team to escape or something

Kinda miss those

Asking as someone who hasn't played or really followed the game for a long time, is there an ETA or at least any news on the last TF2 comic? i loved those but i see it still isn't released...

Not really clear. The main writers of the comics left Valve but it sounds like they started work on the comic before they left. Valve also has at least 1 writer left, Sheila Sadeghi who does work on TF2. I'm guessing she'll finish it up based on what Jay Pinkerton and Eric Wolpaw came up with with the plot for the final comic. Each comic has taken longer than the last to come out so I don't expect it anytime soon.

I'd subscribe to a monthly Valve comic tbh. Loved basically all their TF2 and Dota stuff.

Shame they're bleeding writers like crazy, though. ):

We never got an answer for who was in the middle of the two cut pics between Blutarch and Redmond huh? I remember that Halloween image and I don't think we ever got anything out of that.

171 hours in this game, and just about exclusively 2fort capture the intelligence. This thread is making me want to hop back on and maybe play some other maps and game modes. It's probably about time.

The game does have way more map and mode variety besides 2Fort, I would suggest checking some of them out.

There's no way Valve could delivery on a monthly comic unless they basically outsourced everything.

This game needs a proper vanilla mode, not just custom servers since I have a hard time finding any decent in eu. I didnt mind the added weapon much up until they gave pyro the jetpack. That thing made my 2fort games suck a bunch and made me miss the vanilla gameplay dearly :(

Even competitive ESEA servers allow most unlocks now. The amount of people who long for vanilla probably isn't enough to justify making it a game mode.

About a week ago the TF2 GC was down for half the day to fix some SQL issues. You could only play on community servers with the default unlocks.
Sadly I was working for most of that day so I missed it.

The only issue is the Spy and Engie who are going to have their melees out way more often than other classes so I don't know what you would do about them or if they make the idea completely nonviable.

Really this is just a problem with TF2's original design decisions being incompatible with the design decisions they chose to make after launch to keep it supported.

Pre-unlocks, characters were built around their primary (not literally their 1st slot weapon, but their "main weapon" in the case of Engineer, Spy, Medic) and the other 2 weapon slots were basically boring filler weapons that you'd use in a last ditch situation. The only real exception to this is Demoman where they talk about in the dev commentary that Demoman (even tho stickies is technically his primary) is intended to weave both together at the right situations.

Essentially, the stock classes are for the most part one dimensional, they have super apparent strengths/weaknesses and do those things really well/badly and that's about it, and those strengths/weaknesses largely come due to HP/speed/a single weapon.

The reason that this is incompatible with the idea of "sidegrades" is pretty obvious:

You're balancing these unlocks around generic weapons that honestly aren't even that great most of the time. This means the "sidegrade" has to either be equally bad/boring or else it will generally be better, and neither of these are very ideal, but when it comes to making the game fun Valve (rightfully I'd argue) leans on the latter. We don't need unlocks as boring as stock melee, but in turn basically 99% of the melee unlocks in the game for non-Engineer/Demoman/Spy (who are all melee special) are better than their stock and diversify the class out.

Going beyond melee, take something like Scout's secondary slot, which is a really good example of how sidegrades are difficult for boring base items.

The Pistol - while not awful in the hands of someone really REALLY good at it - isn't a very compelling weapon. It's mainly a finisher/pressure weapon. That's fine except - because of how the base classes were designed - the Scattergun is so good that every good Scout other than Quad just leans heavily on their Scattergun and doesn't need to overly rely on a Pistol especially with teamwork.

This makes every single other unlock on the slot more compelling, and with no weapon bans there is no compelling reason to actually use the Pistol other than the GC being down and being forced to use it or memes. The other weapons on the slot either provide great utility or just better impact than someone good with the Scattergun would get out of the Pistol. Mad Milk/Bonk/Crit Cola/PBPP especially are all way more impactful and game changing than the Pistol.

Likewise you can look at Engineer whose Pistol slot is much the same way, even the best case scenario where Pistol would be useful (offensive gunslinger Engineer) competitive Engineers still use Wrangler because Wrangled Minis are more impactful than the Pistol.

The main way around this would be making some of the unlocks built into the class to replace the generic weapons entirely (or creating new unlocks for that purpose), but this is difficult for Valve because people have Strange/Collectors/Unusual/etc copies of these generic weapons at this point which they traded/spent money on, it's the same reason why Valve can't readily delete an unlock either.

This is basically something a Team Fortress 3 would solve tbh.

Been playing TF2 again recently. Is there any way to quickly join the same game as a party member in-game? The only way I've found is by alt tabbing back out into the Steam overlay and right clicking on the friend from my friend's list to join game, which is really clunky. Seems really strange that they wouldn't add similar functionality to right clicking on your friend in-game.

If the person is in a Valve server the only way to join their game is right click on their name in the lower left corner of the main menu and clicking join party, it will add you in the next time the matchmaker adds people to the server (it typically adds people in waves to try and fill out the team so you may not get in right away). If their in a community server when you go to find game and go to community servers you can join them through the server browser.

I just discovered how "fun" the phlog is, what do you use for a secondary?

Still playing, I'm casual level 104 tier 2.....

I'm learning to use the Manmelter and actually aim my flare shots. My reasoning is, even though I can't airblast projectiles, I can be of some use to my team and extinguish folks.

Otherwise, Phlog + Scorch Shot is a good way to gain meter for crits.

Yeah I would say either Manmelter or Scorch Shot is the best way to go for the Phlog. Manmelter is a bit hard to get used to if you don't use it through since the projectile is so much faster.

Hey guys this is my first time posting here. Has anyone ever dealt with people who are aggressive with kicking inexperienced players? I started playing TF2 again after a few years away. I was never great to begin with but got vote kicked out of a casual match for not being a good medic.

I have about 400 hours in game, which I realise isn't a lot relatively speaking. The guy who kicked me had about 4000 or so. When I messaged him and asked why, he says kicks idiots who get carried by a better team, and they don't deserve the rank increase.

I feel kinda deflated now if this is a normal occurance. Is it worth me sticking with it or moving on?

Sorry for the long post.

That sounds like a complete asshole. I've not had that experience ever! I think it must be a rarity. I can't imagine why anyone would be that aggressive.

I wanna say keep at it. But I admit I haven't played recently, so maybe it's changed for the worse? ):

What's the objectively best loadout for each class? I'm aware most of the stock weapons are flat-out better.

I've played for years, and have on occasion been vote kicked out of casual games, even when I've been top scoring. Then there are those players who queue up with friends, and adopt a 'superiority complex' over other players who happen to be at the bottom of the scoreboard, or just joined with a low badge rank, or don't play the way they want them to, and do nothing but repeat vote amongst themselves until they get them kicked.

Unfortunately, it can happen, but isn't something that would happen so often to make me stop playing. Whatever negativity that person threw your way, don't take it to heart and get you down. As long as you can (hopefully) still enjoy the game, keep playing!

I occasionally see people vote kick bad/new players but it's pretty rare honestly. I always vote against it when it happens, don't take it personally I'm a good player and I've been vote kicked a few times by morons on my team.
Even if you weren't the best medic in the world a team kicking their own medic is just shooting themselves in the foot.

I would say there are very few objectively best loadouts since the best loadout can change based on the situation.
I would say something like the Rescue Ranger for engies running a level 3 sentry is pretty close, since healing your level 3 from a distance is too good compared to what the other primary weapons offer. When I run the gunslinger and mini sentries I usually run a shotgun of somekind (usually the Frontier Justice but it can be some of the others) since ranged healing isn't as important in that situation.
Running a normal demo loadout is objectively better than a demoknight loadout but demoknight can be a ton of fun and has it's uses, due to the shield resistances. If you're running a stock demo loadout and the enemy team has a lot of Scouts replacing the sticky launcher with the quickiebomb launcher can be super useful since it can be hard to hit Scouts with pipes if they're half way decent.

Even so there are very few times when you wouldn't run the Boston Basher on Scout, Escape Plan on Soldier (unless you're a support Soldier in which case the whip is good), etc. Most stock melees are awful in comparison.

Well yeah in comp you wouldn't run anything but the Boston Basher although it doesn't matter as much in pubs since you aren't going to see a lot of medics Uberbuild off of it.
The Escape Plan and Disciplinary Action are the best solider melees (though the Market Garder works fine in pubs too if you do a lot of rocket jumping).
TF2 does have a default melee problem, I would love to see Valve do something to make the defaults more useful since most classes have a melee that's far better than stock (I'm looking at you Powerjack).

In general:

Soldier: Rocket launcher and escape plan. His best secondary is probably the shotgun or a banner but the gunboats are actually the best nyah nyah.
Medic: Stock medigun, crusader's crossbow, ubersaw.
Demoman: Iron bomber, sticky launcher, that giant axe thing
Spy: Diamondback, Big Earner, stock watch
Sniper: Machina, jarate, bushwacka
Scout: Soda popper if you can aim or stock if you can't, crit-a-cola, and, uh, wrap assassin or atomizer I guess, scout melee is pretty irrelevant in pubs
Engineer: Rescue range, wrangler, southern hospitality

I don't know what the best Pyro loadout is anymore.

Even so there are very few times when you wouldn't run the Boston Basher on Scout, Escape Plan on Soldier (unless you're a support Soldier in which case the whip is good), etc. Most stock melees are awful in comparison.

Boston Basher is basically useless outside organized play, you'll be doing the b4nny faceplant all day if you try using it in pubs.

So, I just ran into the next big issue in TF2: Lagbots.

Greyed out names, spamming chat, and being impossible to kick. All allegedly done with 2 lines of code.

Thanks Valve.
