The game offers classic races in which the players compete against each other for first place. However, it differs from traditional kart racers because of its focus on cooperative gameplay: the player is part of a team of three racers and they must work together.
Much like its predecessors, Team Sonic Racing is a kart racing game where characters compete in races in sports cars. Unlike the previous games, the cast and locations are entirely from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Players can also achieve speed boosts by successfully drifting around corners or by performing tricks while in midair.
An alien tanuki named Dodon Pa sends invitations to Sonic the Hedgehog and several of his friends, inviting them to compete in a series of team-based races. He builds cars outfitted with advanced technology for each of the racers, offering them as a prize for the winning team. Though they are skeptical of Dodon Pa's motivations, Sonic and the others agree. The competition takes them across the world, with Dodon Pa pitting them against increasingly difficult challenges.
During the competition, the racers remain suspicious of Dodon Pa, believing him to be working with Doctor Eggman. Investigating further, they discover he is king of the planet Donpa Kingdom and the president of the Donpa Motors automotive corporation. The company is constructing an Ultimate Energy Engine, which gains power from Ultimate Team Energy generated by teamwork. Intending it for philanthropic use, Dodon Pa had been using the races to gather research data for the engine and generate energy to power it.
Vehicles have customization options as well that adjust the performance and appearance of a playable character's vehicle, with new parts for cars unlocked as the player progresses through the game. Each character gets nine parts to choose from divided into three each for the vehicle's front, rear, and wheels, giving a total of 135 parts in the game. Parts modify cars' handling, boost, acceleration, defense, and top speed, and players can also make aesthetic changes such as paint jobs and horn sounds.
The Wisps now function as the power-ups in the game, and racers can use up to 14 kinds of Wisps to help themselves or to hinder their rivals, such as using White Wisps for a speed boost, using Orange or Crimson Wisps as projectiles to throw at rivals, or Blue and Black Wisps to drop behind their car.
