For those not in the know, Dark Souls 2 features a character named Rosabeth of Melfia. We find Rosabeth petrified and without clothing before Majula. When giving her a piece of armor to wear then, she will move on to Majula to become a permanent resident. But even after, you can continue to give her clothing to your liking.

What was that about? Back when playing Dark Souls 2, that really stood out to me. As far as I know, there was no purpose to this mechanic involving her character aside from a handful of achievements. In a series that features badass women like Ciaran, Lucatiel and Sister Friede, this senseless objectification stands out like a sore thumb. What were they thinking, what do you think they were?

Hi, I am Rosabeth of Melfia. Dress me up however you like, naughty boy.

For real though, I forgot this was a thing when I played. Do you just give her clothes and she'll wear whatever you give her? I like to believe there isn't female "breastplates" in the game.

It is basically impossible for a girl to look attractive in Souls or Bloodborne thanks to the engines From uses and their chosen art-styles, so she isn't really a waifu.

Granted, Shanalotte was cute, but mostly thanks to fanart.

Isn't she also the pyromany trainer in the game. I don't think I remember ever seeing her except after unpetrifying her.

People actually thought characters in soulsborne games attractive? The most sexy thing is that full elite knight armor.

It's only objectification if you want it to be. I gave her a sick armor and she looked badass.

I thought it was a neat idea.

I just pawned off some shit armor I got in the Forest to her lol. I don't think it's meant to be objectification. She does fucking nothing else once she's gone to Majula, but that's a grievance with every vendor NPC in that game.

I usually create a female character in my RPGs when I have the chance, but never in Souls games. The models and poses aren't different enough with the male counterpart and it's kinda awkward. Some of the female NPCs look graceful though.

Her wearing the armor you give her means she's objectified? Does this mean your own character is as well?

Well, I'd say it's possible to objectify your own character if you give them the most revealing clothes with the purpose of sexying them up. However, this NPC has this function that serves absolutely no in-game purpose other than alter her looks. She's your dress-up doll through and through.

It was weird.
I figured something cool would happen if you give her the right clothes, but nope.

I would've given her the sorceress set, but limited enemy spawns meant I was barely able to cobble together an entire set before they stopped spawning so sorry Fiora no dress up for you

I dressed her up all goofy most of the time. Either that or super serious, but only on my NG++ playthrough because I knew it'd get wiped on the next NG and I never go past NG++.

I didn't even think of it as a dress-up thing at the time, I thought it was more souls challenge like i hope u carry another set of armor you don't like on you otherwise u need to run back to the nearest bonfire to get past this npc. And without a walkthrough i wasn't sure if giving her shit armor would be acceptable or if she became like an escort quest after getting new clothes and I would be screwing myself by giving her some random hollow gear, so i wound up giving her some fairly decent stuff and then like others completely forgot about her when she didn't come up again.

would have been better if your spoiler tag was actually her breasts.
I hate that I was anticipating that exact scenario when I clicked the spoiler tag.

Anyway, I think that it was a weird/fun little thing to do. For players who are going through the game again, sure you can save a Desert Sorceress set if you wanna be like that, otherwise you can just give her armer you don't use. Or if you're really roleplaying, you can give her clothes you think she'd feel good in during her stay at Majula.

I gave her what I had at the time, and never changed it. LOL She looked pretty cool standing up there though!

"What was that about?"

She asks you for clothes to wear because she just has rags. You can then give her clothes. It's actually answered in the link you posted. I don't think you know what 'Objectified' means.

I think it's more a remnant of a possibly cancelled feature where you could equip your summons with the equipment that you want than anything else.

I miss read the title and thought it said "Dress up AS a waifu" and thought this was gonna be something like how Bloodborne lets you dress as the Doll.

The bitch kept coughing on me, so I let her rot in her rags. Cover your mouth, you ill-mannered peasant.

I was hoping I would be able to summon her at some point in the game wearing the sweet armor I'd given her. Turned out that wasn't a thing, so afterwards my character turned into a lecherous shit and gave her the desert sorceress set.

I feel labeling it as senseless objectification is an exaggeration. I just gave her normal clothes. And for story purposes she was petrified and had rags. It is a bit unusual and weird for Souls though, and doesn't lead to anything.

Pretty sure I just unloaded a mismash of unused heavy armor I had in my inventory as soon as she asked and was off on my merry way.

I wasn't creative enough obviously.

Unfortunately, same here...the potential for sexual horrors didn't even dawn on me either. I was simply annoyed I had to give someone else something.

The whole "objectification" thing doesn't make sense in videogame in the first place. Videogame is a piece of software, and everything is an object in most commercial software. Those characters are just a piece of code, they don't necessarily have rich backstory, believable personalities, development or motivation. If a character is designed to simply be a tool to push the storyline forward or to implement a gameplay mechanics, so be it. They are not real, they are programmed to entertain you. I find it entertaining to play as Mario, but it doesn't mean Mario is a real human, nor would I go on street and start stepping on every turtle I see.

There are games out there whose whole gameplay is literally just you dressing up a virtual girl (or a doll, whatever, they are not real human beings) with various clothes. Nothing wrong with a fashion simulator.
