On the other hand, the #7's stop will be pretty fast as no tyre or driver change is needed, and they only need a handful of laps worth of fuel. If #7 keeps this blistering pace it'll be ridiculously tight.

Absolutely, had a post about that myself earlier. Nighttime racing the past years was abysmal, you could not understand anything of what was happening. It was a lot better now, but there's still a lot of things the FIA and Eurosport need to figure out. Namely:
- better director, as he missed out on a lot of live action and only came up with replays really late
- showing more and better information on strategies, points situations, lap averages, etc. during the race, because only the commentators provide context
- introduce split-screen coverage if they really gotta have so many ads and studio segments
- talking about ads, we probably lost like an hour due to Eurosport playing their top 5 dances and shit like that - like, seriously?

Somebody Tweeted in yesterday about all the advert breaks and one of the commentators said they were needed for revenue as it costs money for the coverage, I don't know how much Eurosport pay but I do remember years ago Eurosport lost the rights and it was on Motors TV and it was difficult to watch, I think you only got Motors TV on Sky in the UK you couldn't get it on cable, it was on Motors for a couple of years and the auto manufactures and sponsors were not that happy because of the reduced audience, so I think it has to be on Eurosport, the adverts in this could pay for other motorsport coverage over the year, I'm not that fussed about it really, my only issue is its always the same adverts though, I think the issue is also that they keep waiting to put an advert break in and nothing is happening on track for sometime so they go to a advert break and just as they do something happens or it happens when there is a advert break running.

Yeah, I get why they need ads and it allows us "uninterrupted" coverage of this race I can live with them. When half of it is self-advertisement, lengthy logos of their own channel or (not kidding) actual ads of the fact they will be broadcasting the 24 Hours or Le Mans this weekend... that's just absurd, and all that is time they could save and show the race.

I'm happy I got the Eurosport player for another month, 24h uninterrupted coverage.

I agree, maybe they put in a lot of self promotion is they get a lot of viewers that do not usually watch Eurosport, I am just happy there is full 24hr coverage.

#7 not really gaining anymore. Positions frozen now. Too bad, totally understandable on Toyota's side but I would have loved to see a final lap battle.

Welcome to Le Mans. It's a shame for #7 but as long as Toyota get a 1-2 after all the years of hardship they had here (especially in 2016), then they'll be happy.

Yep. Even more so than Formula 1 and the likes, this is a team sport. Once you're 1-2, unless a position switch allows you to beat another manufacturer, it will not be allowed after the final stop. They had 23.5 or so hours to duke it out and Toyota knows fully well how it feels to throw away a certain victory.

The final lap and the penultimate time we'll see the LMP1 cars (in this form) racing in anger at Le Mans.

I am happy about the results tbh. Alonso and Buemi are great drivers who deserve the win, they've been struggling with the car all weekend and while I'm gutted the #7 got robbed by unluck again, it was never a "fair" fight with the issues on the #8 to begin with. Very happy for AF Corse bringing Ferrari back on the 70th anniversary of Ferrari's first win here. And Bleekemolen bringing the win in the Am is another one I'm happy about, really liked the guy 10+ years ago in A1GP and such.

Overall it was a fine Le Mans, I'd rate it 7/10. Toyotas had it relatively battle-free but there was enough drama around them to make up for it. What some envisioned about the privateers being only a second or two away didn't materialize either, but at least their battle was bonkers with tons of drama. The GTE Pro was brilliant. The Am also had a great finish. Only the LMP2 was relatively uninteresting to me. Could have been a better race but it was fun enough to stick around.

Edmond Dantès

Thanks for the yearly thread again! Was fun to watch it with all of you.

Looking forward to seeing what the Hypercars bring to the table next year.

That was another good year. The way the battle at the front was decided was a shame but I'm happy for them, and all the other winners through the line-up.

Don't hypercars enter the fray next year?
The Hypercars won't be ready for Le Mans in 2020. Toyota, Aston Martin, Glickenhaus, Oreca are all aiming for 2021. With McLaren and maybe Porsche in 2022. Two years later in 2024, the Hydrogen or Electric regulations are due to come into effect.

So for next year, another Toyota win, huh? It's too bad Porsche retired after 2017, things would have been much more interesting.

If the ACO try to make the privateers more competitive, then Toyota may have some competition. Rebellion will be back, along with SMP and a new LMP1 addition in Team LNT. Expect at least 8 LMP1 cars at Le Mans 2020.
