Dusk at Le Mans with variable weather conditions. Lovely.

Live timing for the new page:

Does anyone know if the WEC/Le Mans app will be showing live coverage of practice and qualifying in addition to the race?
I just checked the app. Practice and qualifying 1 have been and you can watch the replays. Qualifying 2 starts in 15 hours.

I bought the Le Mans race package through the Android app. Not certain if it's the premium package or not. It seemed to be the only option apart from a year race subscription.

Posting from Australia. Not certain if it would be different in other countries.

I was pretty impressed by SMP's laptime, but track conditions should be taken into account. Toyota still look very much ahead of the competition and only reliability issues or on track action will be their undoing.

1.3 seconds separating the top 6. Wasn't expecting it to be this close. Toyota may actually have a challenge on their hands.

Really like how the GTE Pro class are so close to each other. Setup for a good race.

Hmm, I don't know... The hybrids can run longer, so they'll have to stop less on the pits.
Yes indeed, but they'll have to push a bit harder than they were expecting and that could result in reliability issues kicking in, possibly. The start will be a spectacle with the SMPs so much faster in a straight line than the Toyotas.

I hope you're right. I also hope that Lotterer won't f things up at the start of the race again like he did last year. Man, I got mad back then, heh.

Pleasantly surprised to see the privateer LMP1s lapping so quickly in qualifying trim, although the advantage of Toyota's hybrid drive during the race, with AWD traction out of slow corners and in the wet and the ability to boost past traffic, cannot be overlooked. Not to mention they can stretch their fuel one lap further per stint.

It's worrying to see both Rebellions suffer engine failures, what with reliability being one of the Gibson V8's strengths, (although the R13 is said to be running a new, higher-power spec). Dammit, those cars in that livery look too fabulous to not have a decent result!

No surprises, (and no shortage of contenders), in GTE-Pro, though. I'm pulling for the Pratt & Miller squad to send the C7.R out with a win, although the 488 is well past due for one, too. It'd be wonderful if Risi could somehow defy the odds and steal one from the factory squads.

Although I'm rooting for the #1 Rebellion, Toyota deserves some praising for sticking with WEC after the debanding of Audi and Porsche, and I hope they find a lot of success with the hypercar formula on the future.

Let's hope so. This sounded like the worst Le Mans race I can think of, there isn't even the added spetacle of Alonso's presence as it's his 2nd try and he won last time around. If somehow the Toyotas aren't that much faster than the rest of the field, that'd be great.

That sounds great, and it makes make me pretty hyped for next season. I've been watching non-Le Mans races of the WEC here and there but I might just start following it properly. Hopefully the large freedom given won't result in performances being too far away from each other, because the organizers proved from time to time that they can not use the BoP ideally, thus I'd hate the racing come down to that.

The traditional British manufacturer will develop a racing car together with Red Bull based on its hypercar Valkyrie. Red Bull technology guru Adrian Newey will be responsible for the design. (...) Toyota has also committed itself to the ACO. The Japanese remain loyal to Le Mans. Toyota will continue next season with the TS050 Hybrid and then develop a new prototype for the duel with Aston Martin.

Wait, so there will be LMP1s and Hypercars running toghether? Will they be put in different classes or they'll be on the same class (with the help of the BoP)?

I'm uncharacteristically apathetic towards the race this year. However, I am very excited about the upcoming hypercar class!

Toyota has also joined the Hypercar formulae. Great news. Bring more on!

If you watch the video, they will be in the same class (referred to in the video as the Hyper Sport class) with a BoP ensuring performance parity between them.

Glad to see the new Hypercar class finally get off the ground. As much as I'll dearly miss the LMP1 formula, and in particular the latter-day hybrid rocketships, there is an undeniable appeal in cars reminiscent of, and in some cases derived from, roadgoing models competing for overall wins at Le Mans and abroad. The Valkyrie, for one, is far too amazing to languish in a billionaire's garage or private track day, and I love that it gets to go racing. To quote Andy Palmer:
What could be more evocative than the wail of an Aston Martin V12 leading the charge into the night on the Mulsanne straight?

Nothing, friends. Nothing.

There's a lot of moving parts, and it remains to be seen if the ACO and FIA can get them all to mesh together, but props to them for getting this far, and here's to hoping for a stable and viable class that'll endure, (sorry...), for many years to come.

There is only hours to go now, I cannot wait.

A shame there is nobody to take the fight to the Toyota's, SMP and Rebellion will give it a go but going to be difficult for them, what is the weather supposed to be like, would rain help or hinder them?

No rain expected, with average temperatures for the month. Rain wouldn't hinder Toyota perfomance wise, it would however add the usual drama.

Oh, cool. I just discovered that I'll have to work tomorrow and I'll miss the first hours of the race (exactly the ones Fox Sports Brazil will transmit on saturday), FML...

That's weird. I wonder what will happen with the LMP2s too, because the current formula is faster than the future hypercars. Will the class be extinct and everyone be moved to the new class?

sharkfins should be banned in all motorsports
I think they're cool, specially on prototypes. Without them the car looks... incomplete.

I have a feeling the Hyper Sport class is to replace both LMP1 and LMP2 given the desired lap time at Sarthe is 3m30.. Pure speculation on my part though - will take a look around and see what news is out there.

I'm thinking they'll just slow the LMP2 class down a bit, but that would also entail rejigging the GT classes, otherwise the overtaking issue of a few years ago will become a problem again.

Now I wonder if Ferrari will finally return to the top class of sportscar racing and try for their 10th overall Le Mans victory.

It will be a shame if the proper prototypes disappear though, I do hope the Japan Lamborghini Owners Club (JLOC) make a return if Lamborghini have a car that is allowed, JLOC always tried their best in a car that was never up to it.

As much as I love hyper/mega/super cars Le Mans needs proper out and out racing specialist prototypes.
