I feel like the majority of animated avatars were asian girls mugging for the camera on the old forum before animation was taken away.
I find them annoying as fuck, but if it's an option I can turn off, of course I am fine with that as well.
I assume this is more a bandwidth issue than anything, no? Sure you could allow externally hosted avatars, but then you couldn't really enforce rules as efficiently. But yeah if money allows, letting people disable/enable the feature at their own accord seems like the better option.

If animated avatars are allowed, I would hope there can at least be a ban on ones that are quick flashing images, since that may not be great for anyone here with epilepsy.

Whoa ok. Please don't change them. I see no harm in them and if you want yours to be static, you can do it. Don't limit the rest of us who want animated avatars.
As someone who grew up on sad European butter and cheese sandwiches, I agree.
Mine was as trippy as yours and mods removed it (I dont blame them, it was just to prove a point)
Guess if animated avatars were to be a thing, it would need some rules on TOS
I really doubt people are gonna flock to trippy avatars just because gifs are allowed.

Too distracting. We're simply wired to notice movement and pay attention to it. Of course, I'm fine with optional but if it's one or the other, then I'm strongly against.

It's moot point, people can just as well get static avatars of penises or vaginas.
Genuinely can't stand any forum with animated avatars. Let me turn them off now, please, they are literally hurting my eyes.

Yes. Compared to a static image even that fairly restrained gif is very distracting.

So animated avatars bother some posters so much, they're intentionally making shit, possibly seizure inducing avatars to ruin the fun for other posters?
You can't use content that would be banned for display in a regular post as an example against animated avatars.
Exactly, flashy/trippy avatars can be against the TOS too if the admins decide on that, it's that simple.

As much as I would like to have one myself, I must imagine it would add a lot of extra strain on the servers.
At such an early stage of this forums life I wouldn't think it was a good idea to drive costs up for something that would only be cool and not a necessity.

In order to not bother me visually, any movement in avatars would need to be against the TOS.
Hence my vote for "No."
