The AP is reporting that the Army and Navy academies are investigating the hand signs flashed by students at the Army-Navy game:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Army and Navy academies are looking into hand signs flashed by students that can be associated with “white power” and were televised during the Army-Navy football game on Saturday, school officials said.

Cadets at West Point and midshipmen at the Naval Academy in the stands both appeared to display the sign during the broadcast, officials with the two military academies told The Wall Street Journal. The gesture was seen during an ESPN broadcast segment.

School officials are trying to determine what the hand signals were meant to convey, they said.

“We’re looking into it,” Lt. Col. Chris Ophardt, a spokesperson for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York, told the Journal. “I don’t know what their intention is.”

“We are aware and will be looking into it,” said Cmdr. Alana Garas, a spokesperson for the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Pentagon didn’t immediately respond to the Journal’s request for comment.

U.S. Coast Guard leaders last year reprimanded an officer who used a similar hand sign during a television broadcast.

To give out commendations? The crowd erupted for trump and the players looked at him like he was god in the locker room.

I'd like to think that if I was a white supremacist, I'd be smart enough to not flaunt it and potentially damage my future before entering a position of authority. But then again, I'm smart enough to not be a white supremacist.

And also, I guess white supremacy is mainstream now so maybe hiding it doesn't really matter anymore.

How long before someone claims they were just playing that game and not acting like racist scum?

Why bother with a hand sign when they can just tattoo "I'm a cunt" on their foreheads if they want the world to know so badly?

The armed service has cracked down on this before and will do it again. The brass does not want this and all the press around it.
Yeah I remember the speech given at the Air Force academy when there was racist graffiti painted somewhere. Turned out to be a hoax in that specific instance but they didn't seem to take it lightly before knowing that.

Time until Trump personally intervenes and puts an end to any inquiry? Or even that jackass Esper doing so pre-emptively.

The head of the academy went to town condemning it in a speech to the assembled cadet body.

ADL states 4chan hijacked this in 2017:

In 2017, the “okay” hand gesture acquired a new and different significance thanks to a hoax by members of the website 4chan to falsely promote the gesture as a hate symbol, claiming that the gesture represented the letters “wp,” for “white power.” The “okay” gesture hoax was merely the latest in a series of similar 4chan hoaxes using various innocuous symbols; in each case, the hoaxers hoped that the media and liberals would overreact by condemning a common image as white supremacist.

In the case of the “okay” gesture, the hoax was so successful the symbol became a popular trolling tactic on the part of right-leaning individuals, who would often post photos to social media of themselves posing while making the “okay” gesture.

Ironically, some white supremacists themselves soon also participated in such trolling tactics, lending an actual credence to those who labeled the trolling gesture as racist in nature. By 2019, at least some white supremacists seem to have abandoned the ironic or satiric intent behind the original trolling campaign and used the symbol as a sincere expression of white supremacy, such as when Australian white supremacist Brenton Tarrant flashed the symbol during a March 2019 courtroom appearance soon after his arrest for allegedly murdering 50 people in a shooting spree at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Yeah, brass don't play games with cadets showing their asses publicly like that while in uniform.

Uranus, get it?!? YOUR. ANUS.
You know, I wish that dumb "ok" gesture wasn't made out to be a symbol of racism. My siblings and I been played the "don't look" game before all this shit. Then someone told my son he was being racist when he played it with his brothers at a playground. Then I learned about what it also was.

We've since switched to a hand gesture that sees all five fingers come together to form a point. Hopefully that doesn't get taken.

That's the point. They go out of their way to adopt benign "signals" which to most folk is just that, a game from years back or a silly hand signal that has no meaning. So when folks in the know catch on and call it out, all the normies laugh at the "overreacting liberals" while they keep flaunting their power level.

Man you’d be surprised how many people like this you’d come across in the service. Probably one of the most racist, homophobic and misogynistic organizations I’ve dealt with.

I'm actually really confused since I know a ton of people that still use it for that dumb "haha you looked at my hand" game. Or at least, I hope they're using it in that way and not for white power lol.
Circle game is if it’s below the waist, so this doesn’t even have that as plausible deniability.

Even if you're making the argument that it's not a white supremacist hand signal and that it's just a hand sign used to trigger libs, it's not appropriate for someone in uniform to do that.

Imagine they did bunny ears instead. That's still unfit conduct.

Wow I just realized the 3 fingers are the W and the O and the arm is the P.

And they use this in Watchmen as a white supremacy hand sign. So it should be known for what it is now.

It's been known it's a WP symbol for years now. That "childhood ok handsign game that only white youths know about" excuse is outdated.

Looking in to, but will there be actual punishment?
Only palliative bullshit probably. Military institutions largely have no way of addressing the cause and effect between: pushing nationalist shit on their soldiers to boost patriotism and willingness to die for their nation and the anti-immigrant white supremacy that arises out of that sense of nationalism.
