The bad look of Square Enix's Avengers game is making Marvel Ultimate Alliance: The Black Order looks good

It's hard to say right now when we've seen zero gameplay from Avengers. I think we know what MUA3 is. It's going to be a fun co-op beat 'em up game. To me, Avengers has the higher ceiling and potential because of what it could be. Whether it reaches that potential is the great mystery right now.

Absolutely agree. And MUA3 just keeps adding more comic-faithful characters by the day, it feels like – Ghost Rider and Luke Cage just earlier today!
Also freaking Elsa Bloodstone
I’m still waiting to see some actual substance akin to the previous games (including X-Men Legends 2).

We’ve seen ZERO from the actual mechanics/rpg elements. I see no gear to equip or loot drops to speak of.

What is this game, even?
Actually you unlock new skills every ten levels(starting with one) and as you upgrade them each different skill gives you a passive buff too

Also unlike previous games there’s no xp share so you have to focus on leveling up individually
As for loot there’s collectibles and iso8 which adds as equipment(you start with 1 slot unlocked but eventually have four) that can modify various stats. You get them from random boxes in levels and from beating tough enemies

Alt costumes are also back

Official site is up lots of good info and bios on all revealed characters

They both look good and will both be good, dang there is always something to hate on isn’t there. No need to put them against each other. They’re going for different things we don’t compare a point guards stats to a centers just because they both play basketball and may wear the same teams jerseys.

It's frankly bizarre how they're clearly inspired by the MCU, but are going out of their way to not be the MCU.

Spider-Man PS4 did this much better.
Spider-Man is clearly its own thing, and while it pays its respects to the MCU, it never does so at the cost of its own identity.

Inversely, this game is clearly the result of an inability to pay for the likenesses necessary to do an MCU game, but trying to do an MCU game anyway. Everything from the music to the art direction screams that they wanted to make an Avengers game but don’t have the option to actually do so.

Yo I’m actually interested if this is the case
It’s not, see my other post

Not for me, they both look like cheap, rough, uninspired Marvel games that 3rd parties used to churn out pre MCU, I have a mild interest in Avengers game due to Crystal Dynamics, UA can do one, it looks utterly forgettable. Huge step below the quality of Arkham and Spiderman games.

The voices bother me far more than the look
this was it for me, more than the faces. it's really unfair to the game that my brain spent the whole trailer genuinely expecting to hear the MCU voices, but that's what happened. every syllable of not-hemsworth felt bizarre out of thor.

I assume if i buy the game it'll go away in an hour of game-time.

It is nice that different games using the same IP are trying a variety of art styles. You have one going for a more realistic approach and one going for a more comic book approach. I think it's great but I'm not surprised that the Square Enix one is making the characters look different, I never would have expected them to get the likeness of the actual characters.

In fact, when Fortnite did their collaboration with Marvel for End Game, the characters there didn't use the actual likeness of the characters either.

I just don't understand the point of the Avengers game if I can just play Ultimate Alliance lol. I have little to no entrance in the Avengers game.

Also, I get that they have perfected their craft, but I really didn't want Nolan North and Troy Baker in a Marvel game

I’m gonna grab both... but I imagine Avengers will look and run MUCH better than MUA seems to look and run in every preview so far lol
Looks fun though

Watching the trailer, it felt like they were trying to evoke the MCU versions of the characters without getting close enough to have to pay for them. That's probably not what they were going for, but that's what it felt like. Like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too.

I respect them wanting to go their own direction with the character designs (MUA3 isn't even attemping to evoke the MCU), but I feel like if they wanted to do that they should maybe try and distance themselves more from the movies a bit (maybe some different costume designs or something). It's probably unfair to them to have to deal with the expectations people will have based on the movies, but that's the reality of the situation.

I'm not writing the game off, but I need to see more (particularly gameplay).

I think Square's characters look good. People are just not used to them and they will most likely grow on us when we play the game. There will be different costumes for people who don't like the tactical gear on Captain America. I think it's great.

The only thing bothering me is hearing Nathan Drake's voice but on Tony Stark. Nolan North is very talented but directors keep forcing him to make Nathan Drake's voice and it's annoying. Other characters sound good from what I've heard.

The weird thing about Avengers is how much they focused on showing the characters and story off as if the models were absolutely gorgeous. I think the big issue is that all we know about the actual game is the story and what the characters look like. One of those things is very good, one of those is very ehh. When you sprinkle in a few seconds of Avengers running down narrow corridors fighting bad guys, but keep cutting to shots of their uncanny valley feeling faces, people are going to complain.

They did such a great job of showing of Final Fantasy 7. I know don't really care about FF7, but watching that gameplay I understand the game, they showed me enough to answer my important questions while leaving me wanting more.

Avengers spent more time answering questions I didn't care about (this is the cast!) and no time answering what I needed to know. What is the actual gameplay? What is the loop? If it's a game as a service what is the gameplay going to be? Knowing there's no loot boxes is nice, but completely irrelevant because I still don't know what the game is!

Side note: MUA3 looks dope.

MUA 3 looks rad, the Crystal Dynamics game sounds bad. Their presentation did them absolutely no favors and has really set them on the wrong path from the outset. Tough break.

Also, sure, the movies are popular, but the Avengers fucking suck. Give me some X-Men, thanks.

Art style does a LOT.
I have no problems with the art styles of either game tbh, but there is absolutely nothing so remarkable about MUA3s artstyle that it makes me ignore literally everything else the Avengers game seems to have going for it...

The outrage over the character faces is so exaggerated right now, yet the combat, lighting, effects, etc., that was shown during the presentation blows MUA3 out of the water...

Shame, but I t doesn’t seem too loot intensive and I like skill trees. Just don’t want to be inventory managing constantly. I liked it in Diablo and that’s about it.
I mean it does have loot. That’s why I said read my other post. Also you get to manage points given to special attacks that all give you different bonus effects. Again this is all in my other post

I think people are just mad because they expected them to model the characters after the MCU Avengers for some unknown reason?

It's less that MUA3's art style is remarkable and more just that Avengers' is that bad. Cap looks like every puffed-up shithead cop I've ever known. Thor looks like a third-string community wrestler.

The two games are going for entirely different things, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting porn parody vibes during that Square-Enix reveal lol.
nailed! there's just something so weird/sterile going on. hard to believe these're the guys who did the tomb raider reboot. i mean, as bad as i think those games were, they at least looked pretty damn good :) ...

Yeah I'm not sure what anyone expected here. The only complaint I've seen is that they're basically not the MCU actors and that's throwing people off. It's hard when you're going for realistic graphics but the faces aren't what people have become accustomed to.

However, the game itself looks good.

I think the asthetic of MUA is easier to get right and not throw people off, but geez the game itself looks ROUGH.

I think MUA3 looks like it wants to be a fun video game starring comic book characters. I think Avengers wants to be a cinematic experience, but that’s inevitably going to draw comparisons to what is the currently most dominant film franchise in the public consciousness. I’ll be getting MUA3 for the silly fun, but I’ll need to be convinced Avengers can offer me something just rewatching some MCU films will not.

I honestly don’t get the complaint of “bootleg Avengers”. Did anyone honestly expect them to be the movie likenesses and actors?

This is the same sort of treatment as Spider-Man, but you don’t see people whining about Peter Parker not looking like Tom Holland or Toby Maquire.

Just goes to show that artstyle goes a long way. Yeah, Avengers is clearly the more technically advanced game, but it feels like it's missing something. Like it has no soul of its own. I'm sure it'll come into its own and distinguish itself from the MCU as we see more of it, but for a first showing it was rough.

(Side note: Getting Nolan North to play Tony was a terrible idea, because all I can hear is Deadpool).

I said the same thing just above. I think the difference between this and PS4 Spider-Man is that the PS4 Peter Parker was a good design, whereas these just aren't that appealing for whatever reason.

All the voice actors were bad choices, honestly. Laura Bailey as Black Widow just sounds like regular Laura Bailey. None of them can disappear into the roles they were given because none of them are even trying to.

This almost feels like UMVC3 vs MVCI all over again. By now you'd think that people would realize that people would realize that comic book artstyles ALWAYS look better than chasing after a halfassed MCU look.
Both look great please stop pushing this random narrative
Random narrative? People have been shitting all over the Avengers game from the moment it was revealed, that's not random at all.

Insomniac's Spider-Man could obviously get away with changing Spidey's face because he's had three separate actors in the past two decades. We're totally used to not having a set Peter Parker.

The Avengers, on the other hand, have never been relevant in live-action outside the MCU, so changing their faces while keeping them realistic is going to be weird. But either way, Spider-Man 2019 and Square Enix's Avengers game both look excellent. It's literally just that disconnect factor with the faces.

The Ultimate Alliance game is basically a phone game, like I'm not even sure how you can do the comparison. It looks unbelievably cheap. If the MCU movies didn't exist, people would be losing their minds over how cool the Avengers game looks.

I don't think it looks too terrible but they did themselves no favours by not showing gameplay. Iron Mans helmet is hideous though.

To be totally honest it looks like the bare minimum amount of loot you could give a game like that. It's one of the things I'm disappointed with it.

Laura Bailey's been the voice of Natasha for a while now, so she's fine to me even if she sounds like she always does.

Maybe I'll get used to the others.

Also, I think it's less that they aren't trying to and more that the voice director was like "Give us the normal Nolan North voice! That's what we paid for!"

Not really. People complained a lot about Peter's face in Spider-Man PS4 when it was revealed. "Discount Andrew Garfield" "Looks like they mixed all Peter Parker actors into one", bla bla bla. And people complained about the padded suit and white spider to hell and back. Now they just got used to it and it looks normal.

The same will happen to the Avengers game. We'll get used to the faces and they'll look normal when we see more of them.

Black Widow is the only one I'd say looks really bad, rest are OK. They have plenty of time to improve the models.
