Square Enix's not-totally realistic take on the not-MCU Avengers is getting mocked with those 'stunt doubles' jokes. Also riot gear Captain America

Whereas MUA full embrace of the comic aesthetic, classic visual of the Marvel characters look great in comparison. Also, there's Hawkeye and Spider-Man.

Of course, I can't speak for the quality right now but I have a feeling MUA3 will end up being the better Marvel game.

Team Ninja is a better studio than Crystal Dynamics, so yeah, MUA3 will likely end up the better game in the long run.

The messaging of SE's Avengers has been really strange

They state that they wanted to make their own Avengers look, but the world, music and feel looks like MCU, except with Dollar Star Actors.

Spider-Man and Batman Arkham knew how to create their own world and feel but also be inspired by the films and comics

Ayup. MUA isn't my kind of game at all, but the visual design does look miles better.

Definitely some wonky lighting going on in the Avengers trailer that makes the characters go full uncanny valley at times. Hair, eyes, and mouths all are weird. When the lighting is good that game looks incredible.

Meanwhile I think Ultimate Alliance looks like it could be Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and probably should have been left in 2011.

The two games are going for entirely different things, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting porn parody vibes during that Square-Enix reveal lol.

The levels of fidelity of these two games are not remotely comparable. You honestly think a massive budget AAA Avengers game would be more well-received if it looked one step up from a mobile game?

Yeah they really screwed up the look of the Avengers. Ultimate Alliance definitely isn't the most graphically impressive, especially compared to Avengers, but for whatever reason it just has a better look for comic book superheroes.

If the characters didn't look like crappy Comic Con impersonators and sound like bored voice actors just collecting a paycheck it would go a long way toward making the game feel less mediocre.

There was always going to be an issue with the fanbase of this type media by not using the celebrities who played the heroes in the movies just given the amount of time they've spent with those actors and their characters over such a long period. They should have went with cartoonish over realism.

Definitely feel bad for the actors portraying the heroes in this game. I'm sure they regret it and maybe had no idea what kind of shit they were stepping in when they signed up for the roles.

If Into the Spider-Verse taught us anything, it's that comic book shit looks good when you make it look like comics.

Absolutely agree. And MUA3 just keeps adding more comic-faithful characters by the day, it feels like – Ghost Rider and Luke Cage just earlier today!

I'm still waiting to see some actual substance akin to the previous games (including X-Men Legends 2).

We've seen ZERO from the actual mechanics/rpg elements. I see no gear to equip or loot drops to speak of.

What is this game, even?

Faces and voices are all off for me for Avengers.

Captain America has the Superman problem from Injustice 2 that he looks like some random uncle.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 I think will age better, as far as looks go. I really want to see what the actual game of Avengers looks like; seems like it's going to be linear and heavily guided.

I agree that there's a weird dissonance in their appearance since the MCU characters have been burned into the public concsciousness over the last decade, but I think once people play the game for a while they'll get over the fact that they all look different. As for what they sound like, the game is still a long way off. Seems early to make pronouncements about voice acting.

It's frankly bizarre how they're clearly inspired by the MCU, but are going out of their way to not be the MCU.

Spider-Man PS4 did this much better.

How far beyond fucked up do my eyes have to be for me to think MUA3 looks better than the Avengers game?...

People generally responded positively to Insomniac's Spider-Man. This is surely going for the same kind of stylized realism. Whether they succeed like Insomniac did remains to be seen.

Exactly.

If you told me they developed this thinking they got the rights to the actors then 3 days before the E3 reveal they find out the deal fell through and change the faces immediately, I'd believe you.

Cap looks like a guard from Batman: Arkham Asylum. I think the cutscenes look bad, but the in-game graphics look great.

I would have rather CD have gone slightly more comic book, exaggerated than the realistic tone they are trying to crib from the MCU.

Performance matters and MAU3 seems to have a lot of nasty frame drops. It's at least a tie in quality for me right now.

Thor looks the worst to me and that's partly due to just HATING that Thor Design across the board.
The Long Hair and Beard combo just never looks good on realistic Thor outside very specific instances for whatever reason.

Going for photorealism when we have the MCU actors for comparison is a recipe for disaster.

The models would look fine otherwise. Maybe great, even.

People are bashing the game unfairly, I think. And I'm speaking as someone that had zero hype for the project before the reveal.

People just overly hyped the Avengers game, there wasn't any way for it to meet those people's expectations.

The problem isn't photorealism. The problem is art design.

Spider-Man PS4 was photorealistic and looked like its own thing. Square Enix's Avengers looks like MCU cosplay.
