I had a similar thing with Cadbury's 'C' looking like an 'E'.

That's the thing, to my eye, the swirl is the main draw and the line comes across as more of a flourish. And not helping matters is that the line doesn't actually connect to the top of the D.

Even today, I have to focus to see the more traditional D.
