I always wondered why game publishers dont use gifs to advertise their games.

Well if you google Assassins Creed Origins and scroll down a bit past the top stories and game info, this gif is front and centre:

Is this just a case of Google pulling it from Ubisofts Google+ feed or are publishers finally starting to advertise with gifs?

I always thought it was a little odd that forum users made gifs from trailers when publishers could advertise it themselves.

Not really sure what this thread is about. Gif ads are anything but new, but gifs like these are not that suitable for advetising due to their size. Usually you work with 100-150kb size constraints. Also HTML5 ads tend to be preferable.

The real question is, if they are this late to gif, why not just use webm? Why is anyone still using gif?

This isn't an "ad" - but an animated gif that shows up on the Assassin's Creed Google+ page that then plays when you google it.

Also gifs are pretty standardized formats in digital advertising and are nothing new. Webms are not supported everywhere, so it would be stupid to use them.

Every browser supports it except for Safari, and Safari would support it if more places used it. This is just apple dragging it's feet because that's what they do (see also OpenGL implementations)

Then that means they're not supported everywhere and that it's therefore stupid to use them for advertising.

It's also not just about browsers, but ad platforms as well.

to this very day i still wonder, how gif got big again. it should have died.

webm is so much better: better fps, sound, you can fucking pause that whole thing and it takes less processing power to display it.

Isn't op very late to the party? Maybe ACO is the first of this kind for an AAA game, but there are even interactive ads(the world of tank ones usually let you aim and shoot to an enemy tank for example)
