Not going to check 10 pages but I have been studying Vermeer and man, his stuff is beautiful. I remember in 2013 I got a chance to see Girl with a Pearl Earring here in NYC, and we have the Frick and Met with some of his work as well. I have Taschen's giant book of Vermeer paintings. They're very relaxing and just look nice.

I find to Vermeer to be absolutely fascinating. Such an incredibly small body of work (only 34 known paintings in existence), fell into obscurity for about 200 years, and they still have no clue who taught him to paint in an era where everyone learned from a master.

One thing I never realised until recently: Mount Fuji is in the middle of the image. Secondly: this isn't a painting but a woodblock print that was made through a back and forth collaboration between Hokusai, woodblock carvers and printers.

Check this video series of woodblock carver David Bull and his analysis of some of the earliest prints and his efforts to recreate the print to the highest standard. Funny thing: the grey brown part of the upper boat was a printers mistake. It was never corrected because it would have been too expensive to do so.

My favorite painting ever is Destruction of the Beast and the Holy Prophet from 1804.

Gandalf and the Rohirrim charge at Helms Deep reminds me of it

This is a perfect reply to such a thread.

I really don't get on with the Renaissance altar pieces and that. Superlative creations, but not my cuppa tea. The moment Rembrandt (portraits specifically), Velázquez et al turn up, things take a much more human turn and my interest arrives. I can't stand most Pre-Raphaelite art, for instance.

That said I have a weird fondness for Leonardo's Annunciation.

Soon I hope to go to the Prado to see Goya. I think that will be a very moving experience.

Remember the first time i saw it in the national gallery, just blew me away; I sat down for ages just looking at it. Still my favourite painting.

I absolutely love this painting: The Banquet Of Cleopatra by Giovanni Battista. Cleopatra basically one ups Mark Anthony in throwing a lavish party.

Not only is it beautiful, but the scale of it makes it instantly draw the eye. It is currently hanging in the Melbourne Art Gallery and I always look forward to seeing it time and time again.

Something sort of related to the topic itself:

There's going to be a JMW Turner exposition near me and I'm fucking ITCHING to go. It's a collection of his watercolors, brought here in cooperation with Tate Britain, for the first time in Chile. I'll probably go next weekend :D

After my visit to Tate Britain I ended up buying this watercolour via their site: The Blue Rigi, Sunrise.

He's got more well known art I could have got, but this one appealed to me most to have in my room. I like to imagine I am the mountain, calm in the face of adversity. Unlike those birds scattering because of one little boat. Cowards!!!
