The Guardian: Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is 'not a state of all its citizens'
Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel "was not a state of all its citizens" on Sunday in a reference to the country's Arab population.
The prime minister, in comments on Instagram, went on to say all citizens, including Arabs, had equal rights, but referred to a deeply controversial law passed last year declaring Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people.
"Israel is not a state of all its citizens," Netanyahu, who is campaigning for the 9 April election, wrote in response to comments from Israeli actor Rotem Sela.
"According to the basic nationality law we passed, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people – and only it.
"As you wrote, there is no problem with the Arab citizens of Israel. They have equal rights like all of us and the Likud government has invested more in the Arab sector than any other government," he said of his rightwing party.
As the comments caused waves in Israel, Netanyahu again spoke of the issue at the start of a cabinet meeting, making similar comments.
He called Israel a "Jewish, democratic state" with equal rights, but "the nation-state not of all its citizens, but only of the Jewish people".
Netanyahu has been accused of demonising Israeli Arabs, who make up some 17.5% of the population, ahead of April polls in a bid to boost rightwing turnout.
He has continually warned that his opponents will receive the support of Arab parties and that they will make significant concessions to the Palestinians.

Haaretz: 'Israel Is the Nation-state of Jews Alone': Netanyahu Responds to TV Star Who Said Arabs Are Equal Citizens

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday the State of Israel belongs to the Jewish people alone, this in response to a comment by Israeli actress Rotem Sela, who wrote on social media that Israel is a country of all its citizens.
Sela was commenting on an interview Culture Minister Miri Regev was giving on Channel 12's "Meet the Press" program.
"Miri Regev sits there and explains to Rina Matzliach that the public needs to watch out, because if Benny Gantz is elected he'll need to form a government with Arabs," Sela wrote on her Instagram story, which reaches her 824,000 followers.
"Rina Matzliach stayed silent. And I ask myself why Rina doesn't ask her in shock – 'and what's the problem with Arabs???' Oh my god, there are also Arab citizens in this country."
Sela continued, "When the hell will someone in this government broadcast to the public that Israel is a country for all its citizens. And every person was born equal. Arabs, too, God help us, are human beings. And so are the Druze. And so are gays, by the way, and lesbians, and…shock…leftists."
After receiving a number of responses, Sela wrote in her Instagram story: "To everyone who wrote really disgusting things to me following my last story – I love everyone. Your revolting messages will never keep me from saying my opinion. A whole generation of children grew up in our country without hope for peace. And that's sad and depressing. If only the politicians whose voices are heard the loudest would be the ones to give real hope for peace, for equality and for love instead of incitement and separation."
On Sunday morning, Netanyahu responded to Sela on his own Instagram. He uploaded a picture of himself against the backdrop of an Israeli flag, and wrote, "Dear Rotem, an important correction: Israel is not a state of all its citizens. According to the Nation-State Law that we passed, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish People - and them alone. As you wrote, there's no problem with the Arab citizens of Israel – they have the same rights as us all and the Likud government has invested in the Arab sector more than any other government."

The more and more he ties Jewish (and only Jewish) identity to the country, the easier and easier it is to tie any criticism of the country to anti-Semitism. He knows exactly what he's doing to essentially become politically immune.

If card carrying Israeli Arabs can't be treated fairly and equally under the law, what hope do Palestinians have?

This same fearmongering song and dance helped him win last time. No surprise to see him pulling it out again.

A coalition of Israeli Arab citizens (and a sympathetic Jew) was predicted to win about 5 seats in the 120-seat Israeli parliament. So, Netanyahu's Likud party accused them of supporting "terror" and got them banned from the elections. Israel is not a "democracy".

Fuck Israel and fuck the goose stepping Americans defending them at all costs as they all continue to make a mockery of "democracy" and sow bloodshed on the innocents.

He and everyone in his government should be behind bars.

Fuck anyone who says otherwise, you are an enabler of human rights abuse if you actively defend these pieces of shit.

The Israeli goverment has essentially forced Israel to become what they were supposed to be directly opposed to, an ethnostate just like what the Nazi's wanted. Yeah they arent putting people in gas chambers, but human rights abuses and war crimes are exactly what it says on the tin.

Holy shit. This puts the whole Omar gaslighting in a new perspective for me -- Democrats defending an ethnostate/theocracy, not "just" an apartheid state. This keeps getting worse, bleh.

Up until last year, Saudi Arabia was largely quiet from the media and the political parties as well despite being an ACTUAL dictatorship and responsible for 9/11 and the most wicked form of islam that propagates terrorists. That's the power of big money and influence. Its not just corporations, its other countries, for as much as Russia is blared in the media as a convenient enemy.

Even now, we can't even stop our support from the worst human rights abuse in Yemen right now where we are directly aiding it, because of that very money and influence, and dems and the GOP are complicit.

Why do I feel like Bibi is saying shit like this on purpose, KNOWING that people will all him out on it, so that he can call them anti-Semites as a response?

I would argue that the US foreign policy is a shitshow in general, its definitely not "some hypocrisy" IMO.

That's why there are progressives so against the whole russia constant media blaring/red baiting and attempt to shame people who do not support the US apparatus overtly influencing places like Venezuela to install people they want into power.

Putin is without a doubt a shitty dude and he treats his country pretty shitty as well(along with other issues in Russia like oligarch corruption), but considering the actual allies we have that are literal horrible despots with human rights abuses of their own who we never seriously challenge under any circumstance, the enemies highlighted don't seem as bad as a lot of places we care about defending without precondition, which highlights the hypocrisy of our entire stance on these issues.

This goes for places like Cuba, Iran(who we already victimized in the 60s) and elsewhere like in Latin America. A lot of the enemies we have made and decided are bad because so and so are just products of our own actions to begin with.

Its a problem when the information we get is propaganda about the only true enemies being the ones we deem so, and takes any life out of the "the US stands for freedom and justice" mantra that's constantly spouted.

I went off on a bit of a rant, but in situations like this where its blatantly obvious and indefensible for anyone to object, it makes no sense to not say exactly what it is that i need to

At this point, anyone who wholeheartedly supports Israel is worst than anyone who supports Trump.

That's how low they are.

It's a significant wedge in Israeli politics now because the center and left (what little Left there is) political parties have basically no path to a majority without the Arab parties. It's bullshit because the Arab List will not sit in government typically for obvious reasons (Gantz, for instance, is no friend of the Arabs or Palestinians though a less pernicious enemy than Netanyahu).

It's similar to race-baiting in the United States though, let the right wing parties get away with horrible shit because what are you, the voter, going to do? Vote for the black people party? Same principle in Israel: Netanyahu's under indictment for fraud but what are you going to do, vote for the "pro-Arab" party?

Well yeah. Every day it becomes more and more of an apartheid state.

The sooner we admit that, the sooner something can actually be done to address it.

Edit: And Israel is another example why freedom of religion is so damn important. It's literally the difference between all people being considered equal citizens, or only just some of them.

This is done almost every election. It'll be overturned at the courts.

I'm eager to see Bibi gone not because I think all of this shit show will be gone with him, but to prove to people that the problem isn't just with Bibi or even his party, but with Israel as state and it has been since its bloody and tragic inception.
