So only Psychonauts missed the mark.

I'm a Valve megafan but it's weird to see Half Life 2 place above some of this other stuff. I don't feel it stands up as well today as some of its lower peers on the list.

Even amongst valve's own stuff, Portal 2 or even Portal itself being lower feels really inappropriate.

GTA 4's place also seems inappropriate.

Otherwise, I can't much complain. They picked a lot of very nice games, even if many of them aren't to my tastes.

The overrating of TW3 and BOTW continues.

Ass Creed 2 over Overwatch is an interesting choice. Ass Creed is the McDonalds of video games.

Also, no one knows what a Radiant Historia is. Literally no one.
Oh! Oh! Me me me! I know.

Cool fuckin game.

I could also nitpick about the lack of Zero Escape 1 or 2, and any hint of Danganronpa, but that would make me some sort of unreasonably optimistic weirdo. We both know that handheld games aren't real games.

Feels kinda odd with the title of the list and seeing Majoras Mask and BotW both on there. Sure, it covers 19 years, but still. Also, can agree with #1

We can fuss all we like about the placements, like we might for any list, but what jumps out at me is the blandness and the absence of a truly individual voice. This is an exercise in ticking boxes and, like so many of the 21st-century retrospectives The Guardian has run so far, reads like its intended audience are people who don't really follow the medium.

This is exactly the sort of introductory list one would put together for those who don't play games: broad out of obligation and afraid to be iconoclastic. Its only purpose for specialists is to give us yet another triviality to bicker about, as though the ranks and numbers mattered.

Not a bad list. My top 10 would be:

1. Silent Hill 2
2. Dark Souls
3. Deus Ex
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Rez
6. Metal Gear Solid 3
7. Mass Effect 2
8. The Last of Us
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2
10. Bloodborne
11. Halo

No Final Fantasy 12 makes this list useless. Also i still don't get why Media overrate GTA4 so fuckin much. Putting GTA4 instead of Vice City or San Andreas is just plain idiotic.

There's an argument to be made for VC and SA, absolutely. But a mention of GTAIV certainly isn't idiotic. In terms of faithful and lifelike representations of cities in video games, IV's New York / Liberty City was a quantum leap. It seemed like witchcraft on those consoles in that time, to me at least and to many others as well I'm sure.

I prefer RDR 1 over 2 which I find too bloated.

Yeah, bloated and archaic.

Conversely, things like BOTW/gta5/witcher 3 are good games, but have had little or no influence on anything else.
Eh, what? BotW's open "go/climb/do whatever" world and its systemic, intertwining design had little to no influence? You can already see it in games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Far Cry 5 or Death Stranding and you can be 100% sure that upcoming games like Horizon 2 and Gods & Monsters are going to be affected by it as well. It's absolutely one of the most influential game of the past decade.
Same goes with The Witcher's world, story and quest design.

Dude Odyssey is just a continuation of what Origins did and Death Stranding was in development before BoTW even released, not to mention there were already games before it that did the go anywhere.

The 50 games feel about right, pretty predictable. These guardian lists aren't really doing anything for me.

Of course there are some games that should be on the list but it's just pretty uninspired.

XCOM/XCOM2 are the big omissions IMHO.

Quality games, that popularized, or at least gave an enormous boost, to an entire genre again.

When not considering ordering it's a decent list, with it's main issue being a lack of CRPGs and favoring influential games at times while randomly sprinkling in indie titles and new big AAA releases that feel off compared to the rest of the list(looking at RDR2 here especially).

Dark Souls has such an atrocious second half it in no way belongs on in a top 10 here, if you want to prop up a game for influence from that series give it to Demon's Souls.

It's not a bad list.

Obviously we all think certain omissions are crazy. For some reason, I find the lack of Stardew Valley one of the biggest crimes.

No mobile games and Mostly AAAA crowd pleasers in the top 20, this is not a particularly good list.

This list does deserve credit for not only putting Ico on there but it rightly being above SOTC. That it's below the cowardly TLOU almost makes me want to revoke any praise there but then again they did put MM above it, plus putting TLOU that low in general is a big plus in my book.

Swedish coder Markus "Notch" Persson Space didn't invent the concept of the block-based building game – Minecraft arrived just after Zach Barth's experimental title Infiniminer.

Wasn't Blockland the first of these games? Or at least it came before those I'm sure.

Of course it was hyperbole. I wouldn't have any problems with GTA4 if SA or VC were mentioned. The lack of them instead of 4 is what made me say that.

League of Legends being absent from a list containing Overwatch, Minecraft and Fortnite is actually the biggest knock on this list. The biggest PC game on the planet not present smh.

The lack of Japanese games and they have one too many shooters.

Kingdom Hearts 2 FM could have made the list. I'm kidding, it'd be KH1 since their casuals and they'd find it more nostalgic since it was a WTF collab between Final Fantasy and Disney that worked.

I feel like a lot of games don't even get considered or recognised for lists like these.

Case in point, Super Mario Odyssey at number 14, yet Astro Bot Rescue Mission isn't even in the list.

MGSV that high is weird. If you want a stealth game then put Hitman (2016) there and if you want to put a MGS game I don't think that's the one.

Aside from that I guess it's a decent summary of the games of the last 20 years. Probably would've put Braid and Gone Home there.

The order is whatever. Minecraft is a good first choice. I wouldn't put Witcher 3 that high but people like different things.

EDIT: Oh yeah, no League of Legends or a MOBA? Weird. Definitely a better game than something like Uncharted.

KH1 would be the correct entry as it's the better game, and the only one to properly mix the original elements with the FF&Disney ones.

Overwatch is basically a shooter MOBA but it has floundered it's potential so far whereas a decade later LoL is still going strong, both as a game and as an eSport. Any top 50 games of this century list should include it.

I would put DOTA 2 over LoL if they were going to put on a MOBA. Or hell, original DOTA if they were being real about this list.

Yeah, Lol and Dota are extremely well designed games. Their longevity also shows it. It's a strange omission.
