Classic Zeta Zaku,
Bandai even added it into the instructions for the HG.

That is awesome... cept I don't have a regular Zaku or zeta.... I could try putting my Zeong head on something though

ZZ has now introduced me to the best Gundam variant, the Zeta Zaku
latest

All joking aside it is pretty fun and hilarious. Enjoying ZZ so far... so far all the Axis common dates seem to fall on the Crazy eccentrics we want to get rid of side, and Chara is no exception. Ready for Beeca and his toady to get their dues. Been going at a few episodes a day so I'm making progesss
ZZ is a good mood palette cleanse after the ending of Zeta, I still prefer Zeta and the cast over ZZ though. I'm not the hugest fan of Judau for reasons that come up a lot later than where you're at now. At the same time I liked ZZ a lot more on my second viewing than I did on my first.

Three episodes into Reconguista, the first show I've yet to see in this 40th anniversary watch, and it is like Tomino went even further beyond. Cheerleaders, a seeming sequel to Turn A, cockpit toilet, Space Pope rationing energy to prevent the UC from happening again? It's also peak Gundam name. Someone even has the gall to accuse another character of giving a fake name because it sounds made up.

It also looks like Victory Gundam and Eureka Seven had a baby.

I still think ZZ is the least Tomino show if that makes any sense, which is scary since ZZ is till werid as fuck...then again the OG show might be the least Tomino.
Wasn't the crazy front half of the show the part Tomino had the least amount of involvement in? He was mostly focused on CCA or something around that time? Or am I just remembering a bs rumor from forever ago.

ZZ is very Tomino, just not in the ways that most people tend to think of. For as goofy as the series can be, Tomino's trademark dedication to weird sci fi realism is all over ZZ, like how the most effective weapon in the whole show is a sand hose.

Restrained Tomino being most of his UC shows?
Yes, original and Zeta are my favourite Tomino shows. I find that Reconguista and Turn A veer too much into craziness for craziness sake. Victory is fine and ZZ is redeemed in its second half but I don't like the first half.
I didn't enjoy Overman King Gainer either (it seems he was only the director, not the writer). I haven't watched any of the other non-Gundam Tomino shows even though some are considered classics (Ideon, Xabungle, Dunbine, etc.) mostly because they aren't easy to find and I cannot be bothered.

I fucking loved Reconguista. I'm actually rewatching it now after finally getting the Blu-Ray. The characters are wonderful, much like Turn A Gundam and Overman King Gainer.

I watched Brain Powerd. It was an interesting Tomino show.
Actually the first Tomino show I ever watched. Back in 99 I think lol.

While we're on the topic of other Tomino shows, is King Gainer worth watching? I've seen the OP and... wow.

It's the proto G-Reco.

It's silly, bright and colorful and character actions are often "huh?!?", but despite that the cast is fun and charming and the setting is unique. Overall It's a blast but it's definitely not for everyone.

I think I "wtf is this awesome design from" each time I see a G-Reco gunpla kit, and then I realize its from G-Reco after 20 seconds of staring at it lol. The mech design is weirdly on point for a lot of the machines that only show up for minutes at a time near the end. Meanwhile silly looking things like the Mack Knife got a lot of attention.

Anywho!

Started Build Divers from the start again since I did not remember a drop of the 12 or so episode I watched when it was releasing. Man this show is a lot more fun than I remember. But whoooo boy does it make you want to go out and buy a bunch of nonsense kits to make gundams. Sure thats the point, but I did not realize how much they nailed that feeling lol.

I watched Gundam Narative today since it out in Cinema today, Really good and left with positive impression. Thought the movie is pretty much stand alone and didn't really add anything to UC.

kinda bothered that banagher is just stand there and only help at the end only. Could have stop Michelle sacrifice. But then she want to die and it did add dramatic value to final scene. The ding become bitter sweat because of it.

Also unicorn is still stored with zeon. Clearly sequel bait

Hey guys, if I haven't been up to date on Gundam, would I still enjoy NT? Its coming to theaters and I'd love to check out Gundam on the big screen.

You would probably be fine, but if you want to see the story that this directly spins off of just watch Unicorn. It's on Netflix. And if that's not an option -- RE:0096 Unicorn is on youtube for free here in either dub or sub. Main difference being Unicorn is 7 movie length episodes and RE:0096 being those episodes cut into smaller chunks for TV.

I...may have to gif every fight in Reconguista in G. Every fight so far has had a mobile suit kick. This one in episode 10 I'm watching has had four or five and it's barely started. So Tomino likes:

Super reckless characters.
Killing people, especially women.
Prisoners easily escaping.
Weird hard sci fi stuff to go along with space magic.
ROBBIT KICKS.

They don't call him Kill'em All for nothing. I don't remember any deaths in G-Reco?

So far everyone has escaped the cold grip of death sometimes in hilarious fashion except the dude who looks like the villain from Turn A who got murked by the G Self by accident when the main character was hanging out with pirates.

I recalled no main characters dying in Reconguista so I checked and it's mostly supporting characters.
  • Cahill Saint
  • Dellensen Samatar
  • Cumpa Rusita
  • Barara Peor (presumed)
  • Jugan Meinstron
  • Kia Mabeki
  • Mashner Hume
  • Chikara Dual
So, how much one should care about these people deaths is debatable.

Ooh, didn't even know this was coming out. Looks like I have a few theaters near me for the February 19th U.S. showing. Thanks for the heads up.

Whats the general opinion on the Zeta movies?
Watch the original series first, then watch New Translation for the mecha fan-service, like the Hyaku Shiki and Mk.II vs the Asshimar fight.

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED:

FIRST AIRING: October 2002

OVERVIEW: The One Year War, retold again, with 5 Gundams, again. This one is a much more blatant homage to the source material in many ways, and one with a bit more nuance. The Federation is the army of the earthlings, sure, who drove out the coordinators, genetically engineered humans, via a series of terrorist attacks. They largely started the war this time by nuking a colony. The more scientifically advanced coordinators struck back by inventing a device to stop nuclear reactions, crippling the earth's energy supply and causing them to retaliate. Kira Yamato is just a student in a neutral colony...that's building these five Gundams for the Earth Federation. ZAFT, the coordinator army, sends in five commandos to steal these GUNDAMs, but one of them bites the dust and Kira ends up piloting the remaining Gundam after saving a young officer who is guarding the plant, and they get on board a white ship with a bunch of other students...and then Gundam things happen, but with a fresh new coat of 2000's digital paint, weird squished faces, bright colors out the wazoo, pumping music, and a break neck pace so long as it isn't one of the many many recap episodes. That and the soap operatic drama toned way up and the scifi nonsense turned down made this a very, VERY popular show. People loved the characters, people loved the mecha, people loved the romance. It lead to a second renaissance of Gundam to be honest.

MECHA: Crisp and clean. Lots of UC influences and a bit here and there from Gundam Wing but the bad guys suits have one eye, the good guy has a Gundam with the right colors (most of the time, the colored paint is a powered armor coating so we also get the clear coat version of the suits) and there's just something for everyone in this show. Want a rose version of the original hero Gundam from this show? It shows up later. Want the hero Gundam only with more guns? We got that. Want different color schemes? Well, some of the bad guy Gundams are just that.

MAIN CAST: The highlight of this show/series. Fairly believable kids, fairly believable rookie officers, the best ace pilot character in any show. People may or may not like certain characters on the show but they're all memorable. The villain going nuts in the end is something to be experienced. Kira being the first true pacifist warrior is also neat.

BRIGHT SPOT: Mwu La Flaga. He made the impossible possible. The best death sequence since Master Asia...and he was so popular that they just had to bring him back and do it all over again with a happy ending in DESTINY.

SHOULD YOU WATCH IT?: If you're a Gundam fan, you should. You might have heard some backlash on this one. It does look ugly now as do most shows from that time period. The HD remaster doesn't help its main problem in those weird faces. It's not quite at the level where I'd recommend it to someone with no interest in Gundam...but I might have if this was fifteen years ago.

WOULD I HANG OUT WITH THE MAIN CHARACTER?: Kira "Gundam Jesus" Yamato? Absolutely. He's a cool laid back dude most of the time, only fighting to protect those weaker than himself and trying his damnedest not to kill anyone. I'd hang out with most of the main cast to be honest.

RANKING:

MOBILE FIGHTER G GUNDAM
MOBILE SUIT ZETA GUNDAM
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED
TURN A GUNDAM
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM WING
MOBILE SUIT VICTORY GUNDAM
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM ZZ
AFTER WAR GUNDAM X

Gundam Unicorn really isn't living up to the hype I had heard for it. The animation is nice, the music is nice, but there just isn't really anything interesting going on with the characters.

None of it is annoying or offensively bad, it's just... Bland.

There were more screenings added for Narrative near me. If anyone was hoping to see it, check again. Maybe there will be more options.

Opened an old storage bin and found my G Gundam DVDs.

How much of an upgrade is the new Blu-ray set, for those who have or have seen both?

I tend to agree. There is a lot of space dedicated to throwbacks from earlier series (characters and suits) and I would had preferred it if the show pushed forward and did more of its own thing. As cool as those fight sequences were. That being said I'm not too much a fan of the original designs that came out of it either.

It's a major upgrade over the old Bandai DVDs. Not only are the picture and sound vastly improved, but they also polished up the subtitle translations to boot.

Unicorn I believe is consistent with what one might generally find in Universal Century.
Were your expectations based on alternate eras or do you think it is different from what UC has previously offered?
It certainly doesn't have the drama of Seed or the hot blooded action of G.

I am primarily comparing it to the other UC works I've seen (Original MSG, Zeta, War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team).

Banagher isn't a very compelling protagonist so far. Much of the information about him is given through exposition. We're told he's living on his own, but we never see him outside of school. We're told about his mother's death, but only when he's talking to his father. And he cares a lot about stopping war... But only because Mineva/Audrey told him they need to stop it.

Banagher is boring to the point where I just call him "banana," but he's pretty much just a UC Gundam protagonist condensed into a set of tropes and given Kamille's haircut. Also Unicorn takes heavily from ZZ Gundam so if you haven't seen that there are some story beats that you're not aware of...also it takes after Char's Counter Attack so you might want to watch those two.
