This is the open spoilers thread for The Irishman, a film made by Martin Scorsese. It has already been in theaters for a number of countries since November 1st, but it is now currently available on Netflix to near universal acclaim. It has Goodfellas alumni Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci as well as Godfather star Al Pacino for a gang film bonanza of great acting. I highly recommend watching this film over the Thanksgiving holiday (especially since it's nearly 3 and a half hours long).

The ageing technology in The Irishman is amazing. I started watching it, and then felt like I'd aged 10 years by the time the credits rolled.

Finished it today and this one is gonna sit and settle in my mind for a while. It lived up to the hype for sure.

This movie was a fucking journey and I loved every minute of it. Performances were out of this world.

it's like Joe Pesci never stopped. 15~ years after, he comes back like nothing happened. Pacino was also incredible.

That scene near the end of the movie with Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro trying to enjoy prison food and Joe can't even eat bread is just so sad to watch, it's really something how much the last hour or so just becomes this painful epilogue.

Has some really good moments but overall a step down from recent Scorsese films like Wolf or Wall Street and Silence for me.

Overuse of VO was criminal and should of stuck with either showing what went down or showing De Niro talking to the camera and his facial expressions telling the story rather than him giving an account of what we are seeing on screen, the worst was when the but they guy through the tree chipper and him saying that's what's they are doing like yes we can see that.

Also felt very generic and writing this out has actually made me realise I really didn't just dislike some moments in the film but actually hated them. Ah well I'll just go rewatch Departed if I can't get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Seen it three times already (preview screening in October, proper cinema release in November and Netflix on Wednesday) and it still rules. A textured and measured epilogue to his prior crime epics and miles above Casino, Departed and Wolf of Wall Street for me.

It's solid, but found it fairly dull. It's a pretty paint-by-numbers mob movie that misses the flair of his other mob films.

Had to stop after 2 hours, didn't know it was that long. Will probably pick it up again but it did seem to really drag.

Watched it twice since Wednesday and I'm going for a third viewing tomorrow. Masterpiece from my favorite American director.

it was good scorsese qua scorsese but something about it felt kinda, i dunno, empty.

but even then probably the best movie i've seen this year

I laughed at "Boobie Kennedy".

Also, nice sly dig at Trump with the new corrupt Teamsters President being away playing golf all the time. This film has a lot more political material than people are discussing, which I don't understand considering how overt it is.

I love Scorsese, yet I had no hype for this one.
I don't know, I still love most of his recent films, but his best work is by far, without a doubt, his New Hollywood output, and the few films that followed after (Taxi Driver, New York New York, Ragging Bull, King of Comedy).
So I watched it without really any hype, just expecting to watch a good film.
I really really loved it.
I liked how he plays with the pace of the film. Most of the time it goes very fast, the editing is fast, with a lot of shots in a scene. And then in the last 30 minutes, it becomes really slow. He's now old, and regrets that he didn't realized how important the moments he shared with his daughters and Jimmy were. And now he's affraid of diying, and affraid of being alone (which he is, the agents even tell him so : you're the last one)
The last shot is wonderful. He asks the Father to not close the door : in the context of the film, it's because he doesn't want to be alone. But it's also meta : if you close the door on him, the film is over. He doesn't want the film to end, because it'll mean that he's dead. Yet, the film still ends, because it has to at some point, just like life. It's really really sad.

Watching this for a 3rd time tonight. I don't think I've ever watched a 3.5 hour film 3 times in 6 weeks lmao.

The final passage is so fucking brutal. Especially Pesci's hands shaking and the final scene. Goddamn.

Yup, also in memory of his friend Hoffa who left his bedroom door open the first night Frank protected him.

Brilliant movie. Maybe the best this year after Parasite. One of the best mobster movies ever imo. Almost like the perfect capper on the genre.

That was great just on the acting alone. This really felt like Marty and crew last take on the gangster genre.

Didn't like though how Frank shot his friend Hoffa in the back. I think that could have been a stronger moment. It would have been great to see Hoffa knowing Frank has to shoot him and see Frank hesitating. My only complaint for the movie.

Nah. That would've been overly dramatic and not within Frank's character.

Watched it last night. 3 and a half hours well spent for sure. I missed watching Joe Pesci act, the guy is tremendously good in this.

Also never thought in a million years we would get an Action Bronson cameo in a Scorcese movie yet here we are.

Love when directors use a long runtime to give themselves artistic freedom to go off on weird/funny tangents, like that fish discussion.

Watched this a second time on Thanksgiving with my folks. On my second viewing I realized that the guy you see getting shot in the head very briefly when De Niro is narrating at the beginning ("I started painting houses... myself") is actually Hoffa; just before the close-up on the wedding invitation.

Joe Pesci just wanted children. it's so sad seeing him interact with Frank's daughter and she just clearly isn't interested.

This feels like the mob movie's Unforgiven movie. Veterans of this type of movie come back and tell a tale that doesn't seem to glorify the mobsters as much, lacks the firey energy or endings and is more reflective.

i went in completely cold on what it was going to cover. Great performances all around. The de-aging overall I felt worked well. Where it failed was "younger" versions of them looked young, but they didn't move young. It was that movement that was the real limitation.

Also the last half hour or so drives home the point of the film and separates it from the pack

Nah that would've belonged in a totally different, worse movie. Dramatic restraint was a big reason why this film, despite its 3.5 hour runtime, worked so well.
