Great movie. Even though it is a slow paced piece time just flew by for me. I was riveted most of the time.

I think modern media destroyed most peoples attention span.

Joe Pesci was the standout for sure. Wow, nominate this man for Best Supporting Actor.

This film blew me away. Definitely one of Scorsese's better films, and that's saying a fucking lot. A true masterclass of a film.

I saw some people saying that they shed a tear at the end of the movie and I just can't understand. Frank is unrepentant, he deserves his ending if anything he deserves worse, he got off lightly. If you gotta feel bad about someone's ending feel bad about Hoffa walking like a lamb to the slaughter at the side of his best friend.

You can still empathize with the pretty relatable situation of dying alone at an old age.

Man the last 30 minutes are a dread embodied. Rarely do movies show that part of life, if it's not the focal point of the entire story.
The entire thing felt like it was the real message of the movie tho. It really was a metaphor about the greats signing off, the once huge guys being reduced by age to meaningless prisoners of their former achievements, but in the end, it doesn't matter.

I get that feeling that it's a movie about aging yeah. Also the movie is real slow compared to something like casino for exemple.

Of all the Scorsese movies I've seen, this could very well be my least favourite. I found it dull, weirdly paced and with zero characters to root or care for. I guess this movie highlights a moment in US history I really, really don't care about. Unions, Hoffa, Robert Kennedy - whatever.

Especially the last 20 minutes or so with Frank's "downfall into oblivion" [I guess] were beyond tedious. The movie puts so much emphasis on what an inhuman psycho it is, I felt absolutely nothing.

DeNiro was so weird at times when he was moving like a senior citizen but is supposed to be this middle aged guy. It didn't work for me at all. The bit where he beats up the store clerk is just straight up hilarious.

Pesci was amazing though. He really stole the show for me. Awesome performance.

Omg I thought that looked strange too. The scene was clearly meant to depict a savage and violent beat down ("my fucking hand!!") but DeNiro was kinda just lightly kicking and gently stepping on the dude ddd
The de-aging was totally ineffective. How old was he supposed to be at the beginning? He looked like he was in his 60's with strangely young kids. The way he moved and his body shape gave him away. If he had trimmed down and good in shape I think he would have been a lie more convincing. As the majority of the film he is playing a much younger man, he is naively significantly miscast.
that being said, I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed de niro's acting, I just felt that the age thing was a little jarring /confusing.

The de-aging with all the unspecified flashbacks just confuse the hell out of me for the same reasons. I just can't parse what age he's supposed to be. Apparently he's supposed to be in his 30s in the first half? Which isn't the impression I get at all.

Loved the film. The last hour or so was just damn so riveting. Joe Pesci is a delight and it was great seeing him on the screen again. Love Russ. As blasphemous as this sounds, I wonder if deniro was miscast. Maybe they should have cast DiCaprio instead? I say this cause of the first half of the film when Russ was calling Frank "kid" or some of the scenes just don't work as well. Not the de-aging stuff but how deniro moved like an old man and not a young buck. But anyway loved the film regardless. An all timer

mvp for me was Pesci. Hope he gets recognized with an award or two

Saw this film in theaters over Thanksgiving weekend then rewatched a week later on Netflix. I can safely say now that this might be one of the best things Scorsese has done in years and I really liked Silence and his other more recent efforts. To go even further the final act might actually elevate this film to a higher level than Casino or Goodfellas for me but that will be something I have to sit on. Otherwise I can't say much that hasn't already been said but I will reiterate that the movie flies by even if the pace itself isn't breakneck. I paused the movie on Netflix and was so surprised 2 hours had already passed.

They could definitely have cast another actor to play young DeNiro in all the "kid" scenes, and compressed the timeline leading up until Hoffa's death. But then again that's not how Scorsese wanted to tell the story, and he made Goodfellas, so who am I to judge?

Overall, I liked it. I think I prefer recent Scorsese flicks like Silence and Wolf of Wall Street better. The first act pre-Pacino's introduction was alright but not very engaging. The last 90 minutes were great though, seeing them all grow old and slowly die was quite touching.

The less said about the CGI the better, that scene where De Niro beats up that store owner was almost laughably bad. If that scene was in a worse movie it would've already been memed to hell and back.

Condensing the time line before Hoffa doesn't do much but hurt the introduction and set up of the majority of the main players to save a few minutes for those that would still be bored.

I would have liked to see some scenes with young Frank interacting with other friends and family. I know what he does, but all that comes across is that he drives trucks and is protected by the mob as long as he keeps his mouth shut.

If they had cast a younger actor to play Frank, they could have had several formative incidents similar to those that informed the outlook of Henry Hill in Goodfellas.

But like I said, I trust Scorsese.

Watched half of it yesterday and will watch the rest sometime this week - 3.5 hours was a big ask. I only vaguely know of Hoffa, so it felt like you needed to know the background of the character because we got a bit lost halfway through.

Pacino chewing scenery as usual. How old was De Niro supposed to be in the past scenes because he looked about late 50s, at best. It was a bit jarring he didn't look like a younger De Niro he looked like another old guy with blue eyes who looks a bit like De Niro now.

I love it but maybe for how sad it is. The way everyone just becomes so old in the end and everyone just dies off until there's just one guy left. Then there's that line, something the main character says to the nurse like "You don't realise how fast time goes until you're at the end."

I watched it the other day, not really knowing much about it beforehand other than DeNiro was in it and his character appeared at various ages. It was a great film though I feel it could've been a tad bit shorter. It didn't fly by for me like some others have mentioned. The de-ageing was really impressive, especially thinking about how their speech and mannerisms also went into making it believable.

I saw some people saying that they shed a tear at the end of the movie and I just can't understand. Frank is unrepentant, he deserves his ending if anything he deserves worse, he got off lightly. Agree. I mean, sure these mobsters are likeable but not to the point where I'm going to feel sorry for them meeting tragic ends. I thought the scene near the end with his daughter pointing out he never gave a moment's thought about how hard it was for them and how they feared him in a way was pretty powerful.

I love it but maybe for how sad it is. The way everyone just becomes so old in the end and everyone just dies off until there's just one guy left. Then there's that line, something the main character says to the nurse like "You don't realise how fast time goes until you're at the end."

That was a great line for sure.

Loved it, when I heard about it I was kind of concerned it was Scorsese making some sort of fan service play getting all the old gangsters back for one final hurrah but it was such a devastating picture of a misguided man who absolutely sold his soul and slowly withered away.

DeNiro was really showing his age when he was beating up the grocery store clerk. Looked stiff and weak

You're not the only one in this topic to think so but I thought it was the most realistic representation of a fight I ever saw.

It wasn't smooth and swift. There were moments where DeNiro kind of half steps forward, leans in, leans back as if he was feigning an attack to try and gauge the response of the victim before committing to a kick. In my experience, fights often have a lot of hesitation as people try to find an opening.

Finally watched it over the weekend. Hmm. Thought it was okay. Appreciated the acting and the attention to detail, but the movie was just an hour too long for me. Felt as low energy as the geriatric cast. Pretty much no tension anywhere. I didn't know it was based on real people until halfway into the movie, which I guess adds a bit of character, but also means that the story proceeds rather predictably. I feel like criminals who are too stubborn to course correct until everything plays out to its inevitable conclusion, has also been done too often by now.

I think De Niro's age bothers me less than Joe Pesci being almost 50 and playing a 20 year old in Goodfellas.

I read that scene as Hoffa is well aware what's in the watermelon, he's not a moron, he just likes they respect him enough to make an effort to hide it.
Yeah the "not on your life" response when they ask him to try some hints at that.

Also some interesting maybe meaningless call backs (intentional or not) to Goodfellas; Frank's initiation to the mob was when he met Russel following getting caught by the police but keeping quiet, similar to Henry Hill refusing to name names; Frank blowing up a car park full of cars, same as Henry as a kid; Henry making a joke he's a union delegate when asked by Karen what he does for a living given he has soft hands for a construction worker, even then presumably unions had the reputation of being corrupt or possessing a lot of power.

What a fantastic film. Lovely, devastating. Pesci was so goddamned good. De-aging was fine, only distracting at times. The fight was fine.

Deniro was good. Al Pacino was a little over the top but I liked the performance. So many great side characters.

Overall I'd say the somewhat messy front end is completely redeemed and even justified by the last act, which clarified why it was so necessary.

The closing scenes were so somber and haunting, when it closed to black I just sat there, devastated for a character who 100% deserved his lonely, anonymous end. I love this fuckin movie.

Loved it. Better than tWoW and Silence but not as good as GF or Casino. The runtime didn't really bother me.

On a totally off topic side note, I keep hearing great things about Parasite. Should I watch that as well?

It beat out The Irishman for film of the year but I also haven't seen every big contender yet. That said be aware its a South Korean film so subtitles are involved and its best to go in knowing as little as possible.

I just realized 'i heard you paint houses' is referenced in the scene where Frank whacks Jimmy. His blood is sprayed all over the room, painting it in awful, spotted red.

I really dig the movie and watched it twice already. Pesci was nothing short of amazing. Felt like it could have touched a little more on how Frank gets involved with and accepted by the mafia.

I think it's also the name of his autobiography or something of the sort.

This movie could have easily been cut down from its current run time, lots of useless scenes or prolonged scenes.

Overall I think the movie is ok. I guess it does good job trying to make audience empathize with a stone cold murderers, just like most of the gangster/mob flicks. But otherwise I didn't really get much from this movie, it just wasn't as griping as his other flicks of the same source material.

Guess I'm just happy seeing these actors make one more movie together as Italian mob. The acting is good but you can definitely tell how the actors are just old and aren't acting to be old. The tension is ok, nothing much in that front.

The de-aging : so I saw half in on my GF's 1080p set and then went home to watch the rest on my 4k set that evening and can see the slight difference. It looks fine but on 4k set it's more obvious how fake looking it kind of looks but overall they did a great job with it.

But definitely not movie of year for me or even close to that list. Also I guess It got me researching more about the character and real life people associated with it. I'm glad he lived a shitty ass life in the end and had no one that cared about him during his last breath. Guy seemed a lot more stone cold from what I read

Quick question for you guys: is this movie worth seeing without having seen Goodfellas first? My wife hasn't seen it, wondering whether we should watch that first or if she can skip it (for now anyways, and watch it some other time obviously).

Thanks!

You do not need to watch Goodfellas unless you want to. It's a totally different unrelated Mob story that has a lot of the same actors and director. It's a great movie though so it is worth a watch in that sense.

Perfect. I've seen it, so De Niro + "The Irishman" being the title de me think the two were related. I'll have her watch Goodfellas at some point, but for now I want to watch the one I haven't seen yet :)

Loved it. A masterpiece. I'll have to think hard about where I personally rank this, but it will be up there.

I have to make a point of when Pacino and De Niro were clearly forgetting their lines causing their character to either stutter or just completely lose their train of thought. Funny thing is, I fucking loved the realism of these errors and how it formed the characters. Best example of this being when Hoffa was chewing people out in his office calling them "dumb mother fuckers" about "Johnny O'Rourke's kid." It's at the one hour mark.

Also that grocery fight scene. The glass breaking too easily/early, the exaggerated stunt man work, the missed De Niro foot stomps. It reminded me of how movies used to be and I would take that single shot take over a hyper choreographed fight with a billion angles any day.

I liked it. My only gripe with the movie was that there was a weird visual focus on Peggy's character and then... nothing, she doesn't even speak. I expected some kind of twist or something other than the obvious hate she had for her father because of course she knows, but nope, nada.

The deaging dind't bother me at all and all the actors were superb. The dynamic between Pesci-De Niro-Pacino was amazing, such a great cast.

Finally just watched it. What a freaking incredible film. Of course needed Scorsese to bring me back mob movies, and deep this way.
Pesci, holy crap. Acting perfection.
