Correct. Ragnarok probably a close second. Cyberpunk deserves special mention too for amount of really high quality animations in open world side quests

Edit: since it was moved to gaming

But also you're right! I really hope ND is working on a director's cut!

edit 2: I'd actually put the Remake of Part 1 up there too; they did an absolutely amazing job.

its a mix of talented motion capture, animators and coding to put it all in context. I don't know what would be the closest second place because everything else still feels a bit more mechanical compared to this one. That said, these are not the examples id have gone with lol.

What the hell is Ellie doing before she turns to shoot the second person? Left arm flailing, turning her head away from an armed hostile (who, fortunately for Ellie, doesn't react at all to the shotgun being fired ten feet away).

Catching ammo in mid-air

Regarding the second NPC's reaction, in real-time the sequence lasted just a couple of seconds and from the NPC's perspective they had a friendly standing there just a couple seconds ago who was also firing a gun. Plus they were focused on a shoot-out with Dina. That wouldn't be enough time for someone to react to an enemy flanking them

Imo RDR2 tops it

Good because this kind of animation system as good as it looks makes the game feel pretty sluggish to play without absurdly high framerates. I do not want every game to be like this, no thank you.

Ellie is catching the ammo in the air and the 2nd WLF soldier is fighting with Dina in that moment.

RDR2 is also very impressive, but also glitchy as heck in my playthrough. The way characters physically interact with each other and contextually with the environment in TLOU2 is still on another level imo, but that might also be because RDR2's combat was mostly revolved around you effortlessly shooting everyone in the face.

TLOU2 is the best playing TPS

even looking at that the biggest difference is how lou2 animation enhances gameplay and are actually part and parcel of character movement within gameplay. in that sense it is far beyond what red dead is doing. this is not even considering character interaction with environment.

We're not ready for whatever they do next... This is what they did on hardware that was insanely outdated at launch, so I can't begin to imagine what they'll be able to produce once they start pushing the envelope on PS5...

Part III or a new IP, I'm ready for whatever ND has cooking. I loved TLOU2 from the start, but man, the game just gets better with time.

The amount of different animations depending on scenario, height, whether you're sprinting or walking, crouching or standing etc, is insane. It's funny that the TLOU Remake doesn't animate half as well as part II

Yup! Last of Us Part 2 is an incredible achievement there. Even better that the game still plays like a dream with no real concessions to playability.

Easely!!
this and Red dead redemption 2 are just marvels tech Wise, majorly because of the animations.
Gameplay animations and motion capture, facial animations are incredible and this alone make those 2 games the more technically advanced products in the industry, even if they were made for previous consoles…

I am not into guns at all but the way Ellie takes apart the guns at the table to upgrade them is holy shit, the animation in that.

Here ya go, animation breakdown of the TLOU 2 E3 trailer by Dan Lowe. Unless there's another Dan Lowe in video games, he seems to currently be the Principal Tech Animator at Sony Santa Monica Studios

Haven't watched it in a while, but it was worth it.

Started NG+ when the series premiered and just the other day I was reminded how awesome it all was. Threw a brick at an enemy then finished them off running towards them and hitting em with a hammer. Just so satisfying.
I thought the melee combat in Last of Us was really good but it’s so much better in Part 2.

TLOU2 is the best playing TPS

It plays well now with 60FPS on the PS5 and but like always, it would play better if animations did not take such priority.

Lol actually true. The game animate so well its unbelievable that its a game https://twitter.com/SunhiLegend/status/1620519354403262465?t=J4PfXctSQH2827Vdthp_ZQ&s=08

Char facial capture and animation tops Callisto protocol imo even though that received a high praise from DF especially Tlou1 with supposedly recreated with old capture that were even done with motion matching tech in mind.
Holy shit at that whole clip. Lol . Its like he’s playing another game

The first OP gif is from the fake gameplay reveal of E3 2018 btw, it was already blatant back then but I've rewatched it lately and now is even more evident considering the release of the full game.

Here a comparison:

TLOU II and RDR II are head and shoulders above the rest.

You know what they have in common? 5+ years of development. Huge industry leading talented teams and an almost unlimited budget.

Nah. Went back and played it two months ago on PS4 and the sluggish latency and low FPS gave me a headache.

Having played it twice on my PS4 Pro, at no point did I ever feel it felt sluggish. In comparison, RDR2 felt like a chore with its push for realism. I had to sigh whenever I finished a battle cause I knew it'd take a long time to loot all the corpses. Or if I entered a home I knew I was gonna spend a long time to try and rummage for loot. By the end it just didn't feel fun to play. Hell, in comparison playing Days Gone was a breath of fresh air as it was far more responsive and enjoyable to play.

Also, I can't wait for a TLOU Part 2 remaster/remake/director's cut. We all know it's coming, and it's been rumored. That will be both the PC version and the definitive PS5 version of the game. That's a day 1 purchase for me and I can't wait to see how they further add to the masterpiece that is TLOU Part 2

That might be a you problem

Yeah, I don't think low fps and high latency that hinder gameplay are acceptable things in this day and age. Well, they were unacceptable even back then tbh.

I did get a headache and thought the game played significantly worse than it does on the PS5. How is that not true?

I do not think anybody should play the game on the original platform.
