While I'll fight tooth and nail to argue the MCU has already had its fair share of good scores, Black Panther is undeniably Marvel's first score to qualify as great. The composer, Ludwig Göransson, was gracious enough to do a making-of for the track "Wakanda."

And here's the track itself:

Feel free to make this the general Black Panther score appreciation thread too :-D

The Ancestral Plane track is legit my fave of any MCU movie. It plays in all three of the dream sequences, and its always used to touching effect.

Yeah it's definitely my favorite MCU score, I've been listening to it so much over the last week.

Killmonger's theme is so great.

Y'all gon stop erasing the first Guardians score, dammit.

BP may be my favorite as well though. Shame the MCU's scores truly are about as unmemorable as some claim the movies are.

"This video contains content from UMG. It is restricted from playback on certain sites."

Why is Universal Music Group claiming a soundtrack from a Disney movie? The video is posted to the Hollywood Records channel, which is part of Disney Music Group. Super weird.

Pretty damn good OST. Hell, I was nodding my head in the theater whenever Killmonger's theme came up.

Best score to an MCU film, even better than Captain America 1 and Homecoming. Fantastic work all around, especially with how complex and well realized the musical landscape is, with many different leitmotifs and textures.

I still like the GOTG OST more, but this one was fantastic and clearly different.

And Killmonger's theme is an special outlier there.

Easily the best MCU OST and just a great one in general. I actually listen to it on my drives, which has always been the mark of a great OST to me.

Totally agree with it being Marvel Studio's best soundtrack. It fits the film perfectly but it's genuinely great to listen to on its own.

It's fantastic, and everyone should make sure they watch Creed for even more top notch Coogler / Ludwig collaboration.

Outstanding score for this movie. It's my favorite next to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Casino Brawl is awesome especially at 2:35

I've said it before and I'll say it again, while I enjoy Black Panther's soundtrack since it's one of the few MCU scores to stand out, I don't like how European it sounds. And, this track is a good example of this. So, it starts out with a heavy Spanish vibe, almost invoking a type of Spaghetti Western theme with its acoustic guitar. It then transitions into strings with violins and celos dominating for the rest of the track and becoming the central core of the theme. All in all, it is a powerful and moving track. So, what's wrong?

Well, let me ask you, what exactly is "Wakandan" about the track? Where is the African motifs? Where are the African instruments? The entire track feels extremely European with European orchestral instruments. If you took this song out and placed it inside Thor or Ant-Man or Iron-Man would it feel out of place? Because, to me it most certainly would not. And, that's a lot of my problem with the BP score, too much of a Western European influence. Yes, there are some tracks that have quite a bit of African sounds and influence, but even they often become infected with European sounds. And, there simply aren't enough of these more African focused tracks. Now, I could understand of it was only Killmonger's tracks that have a sort of European influence to them since he grew up in the West, but not T'Challa and all of Wakanda.

And, I think this is emphasized especially in the video above when he talks about the "Wakanda" track. He talks about the W. African drums which starts out the track that become heavier and heavier. And then, he states that he brings in some horns to give it that "Royal" feel to match T'Challa as King. Now, this is extremely important when the composer thinks "Royal" he thinks European horns. I repeat, when the composer thinks Royal, he thinks EUROPEAN HORNS. That's all that needs to be said about the track and my disappointment with its musical choices. Why are European horns which were used to announce the heralding of royalty being used to herald in an African King? An African King of a Nation that is isolationist and was never conquered by the West.

Please...

The score is legit great for a film period. The Ancestral Plane, T'Challa's return, everything Killmonger, soooo good.

Totally get what you are saying, and I personally wish it involved more native instruments and such, but if you see the video he states he joined Baaba Maal on tour when he arrived in Africa to do research, and was inspired by him. Now if you go watch a Baaba Maal performance he goes from using African instruments in one song to using an accoustic guitar while someone else on stage whips out an electric bass. The first time I heard him pay the guitar I got really heavy Spanish vibes from it.

Again, totally get your opinion, but just pointing it out. Ludwig had no prior knowledge of the music and culture based in the video, and Baaba Maal left a big impression on him, thus we got this soundtrack.

Apologies for the bump, but watching BP again, I've realised that Killmonger is probably the first character in the MCU with a memorable and immediately recognisable theme - at least as far as I can remember.
