First time I've seen this, guess it was uploaded a year ago

Classic Nokturnel live footage

For the longest time there was only live videos of their reunion, where they're only playing shitty newer songs

Nothing But Hatred is a bit corny but it rips super hard.

I normally skip most doom/death, but Runemagick 'Evoked from Abysmal Sleep' is turning out to be one of my favorites of the year. I haven't gotten into a doom band in a long time.

It is one of my favourite genres but very few releases nowadays as it's not so popular any more, but that album is my favourite of the year and also a return to form for the band. You should check out Daylight Dies if you like doom-death in general.

Good lord, the new Nothing album is depressing shit, but very good. Discovered the band through the Relapse sampler.

New Serpent Column came out today

Also new Death Fortress

Death Fortress is a blessing to USBM.

but, I was just reminded that Fallen Empire will be ceasing operations as a label pretty much by the end of the year. If I'm not mistaken, the most recent batch of releases is the absolute last under their banner. Can't really complain, as people gotta do what they gotta do. They were definitely one of the strongest underground labels around.

Anybody following the chusterfuck that's the Arch Enemy/photographer story?

http://www.metalsucks.net/2018/12/3...ollowing-arch-enemy-photographer-controversy/

Yeah a bit. It's an interesting topic for me, a photographer and someone that does social media for business purposes.

The one thing no one seems to bring up in the fine line between "commercial" and "non-commercial" on social media that I find interesting: The picture was originally reposted on the singer's instagram. That singer didn't get a cease and desist/pay demand. The band is essentially fine reposting pictures of themselves. And, who would really argue with that? But realistically the clothing person did the same thing. Band reposts with "Hey this is an awesome picture of me!" and the clothing person reposts with "hey this is an awesome picture of the shit I made!" Not a big difference there. Unless you don't see the band as a business. But they are. Each photo they repost is business related just as much as the clothing person. They want you to buy their records or come to a show. The picture sells the show to viewers.

A lot of it is death and black metal, with some psych/black and psych/doom in between and some outliers. No Power this year as that is not my thing.

Unless you don't see the band as a business. But they are. Each photo they repost is business related just as much as the clothing person. They want you to buy their records or come to a show. The picture sells the show to viewers.

Speaking of which, all the photographers I know have been happy to provide bands photos of their gigs for free, as long as they're properly mentioned if the pics are published online. Sometimes I've added them to the guest list for a gig in return. Naturally, it's a different thing if the photos will be used for albums or other merchandise. In those cases, we've usually hired a photographer to take the pics. That's why I was astonished when a photographer asked me to pay to have gig photos of ourselves for my own personal archive, eventhough I said they wouldn't be published anywhere. So, no money or fame would be involved. That just seemed greedy as hell to me.

What is happening at Batushka? In the middle of the December it was announced that the singer is leaving the band. Now Krzysztof Drabikowski (founder and the main author of the band) is claiming that the former singer Bartłomiej Krysiuk made a copyright claim on the band's name and took control of social media sites and he hired musicians to continue touring under Batushka's name. So looks like they will be facing each other in court....

NECROS CHRISTOS - DOMEDON DOXOMEDON

Listened to this dozens of times over the past month and it keeps delivering. Godlike album.

I don't know what the story is with this album being their last, but what a way to go out if that's true.

Hey all, this looks like the place to ask. I used to listen to a lot of metal when I was in high school/a few years out of it and I've been getting back into it a bit. I'm pretty lost with whatever's come out more recently with the exception new releases by groups I already knew. Specifically, and what I had trouble with even back then, does anyone know any bands that are similar to Gorguts post-Obscura? That remains to this day one of my favourite albums and it was so hard to find other music like it. I already know about Deathspell Omega.. and that's about it. I think Gorod was suggested to me as a similar group as well but I wasn't into them as much.

If not, I'm open to more general suggestions of other bands I might like. Apart from those two I also like a lot of Meshuggah and Gojira.

Results from the Metal Archives community vote for top 10 albums of 2018, if anyone cares:
  1. Visigoth – Conqueror's Oath
  2. Amorphis – Queen of Time
  3. Solstice – White Horse Hill
  4. Satan – Cruel Magic
  5. Voivod – The Wake
  6. Varathron – Patriarchs of Evil
  7. Primordial – Exile Amongst the Ruins
  8. Judas Priest – Firepower
  9. Horrendous – Idol
  10. Chapel of Disease - …and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye
Full results here. Not a bad list, and I'm glad Visigoth beat Amorphis (by 1 point haha), but I'm disappointed that Summoning was so low (it was even beaten by the new Ghost, baaarf) and that I was the only one who even gave a vote to Deströyer 666's new EP, even.

But congrats to Visigoth \m/

That's a shame. I hope Pertubator, Master Boot Record, etc. continue doing well.

You're right about the new Ghost album. Been a long time since I've been that disappointed in new music.

Yay more music from my hometown :D Really like the cover image, this is the vista that I watch every day.
Vocals are from the vocalist from Within Destruction
Huh. I always thought the Veldes dude was just one really talented person. Didn't know that.

One of my favorites in black metal though. Dissection got me to really check the sub genre out, but Veldes got me to dive deep into it.

Oakland metro, slims, dna lounge, elbo room, regency ballroom...

spread it out to San Jose, Sacramento, I mean club scene is not as jumping, hell walk thee streets in the 80s 90s and any clib would have featured them.

I went to the Sean Killian benefit concert at the Oakland Metro, that is my favorite venue for thrash so definitely stop by

I have no idea, why Ghost are listed as metal band. They are more like arena rock and they were, at least for me, always on the rock side of the music. And I really liked Prequelle, it took some time to click at me, but now it is one of the few albums from 2018 that I can listen in one sitting. Can't wait to see them live.

Speaking of bands getting big, I had no idea that Powerwolf are so popular in Germany. To sell out Zenith in Munich and Saarbrucken arena it is not a small feat.

All music is written and performed by one guy, but this time he invited a vocalist from Within Destruction (deathcore/slam). Veldes guy used to play a bass in WD and they play in another band (Nephrolith) together.

ghost wound up thought of as poppy metal by my friends and I because the first song we ever heard by them was Cirice and that riff sounded doomy enough for us to mentally sort them as light metal band and not hard rock band.

i think there's also that rock isn't a dominant form of pop right now so the only people regularly looking for new music that's even remotely heavy are the metal fans, so the world at large sorted them on the metal spectrum too.

they really did turn the arena rock up on Prequelle tho.
