The Institute for Economics and Peace, an independent non-profit think tank based in Australia, annually publishes the Global Peace Index, an international study that assesses 163 independent states and territories according to their levels of peacefulness.

The study assesses global peace through three filters: safety and security in society, the extent of ongoing domestic or international conflict and the degree of militarization. Researchers considered 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators to determine scores, including the number of casualties from terrorism and conflicts in that country, the number of murders per capita and the ratio of military spending to gross domestic product. The United States ranked at No. 128 for its peacefulness.

Some interesting notes:

- Iceland cool as fuck for remaining the champ, since 2008.

- Canada and Japan still dominating as the two safest large countries in the world, for their population size, in comparison to the rest of the Top 10.

- Per the Report: Peace in North America deteriorated last year, recording the second largest regional deterioration. Canada showed a small improvement in overall score, but the deterioration in the United States was much larger. While Canada remains one of the ten most peaceful countries in the world, the US fell seven places to 128th in the index in 2019. The US has deteriorated every year since 2016.

- Europe: The world's most peaceful region became slightly more peaceful, on average, in 2018. Twenty-two of 36 countries in Europe improved. Europe continues to dominate the top of the index, accounting for 17 of the 25 most peaceful countries. Only Turkey, at 152, is ranked amongst the 50 least peaceful countries.

- South America: Only Colombia, Uruguay and Chile improved in South America last year, while the rest of the region deteriorated. Venezuela is now the least peaceful country in South America, and Brazil recorded the fifth largest fall globally, with nine indicators deteriorating and only one improving.

Other large nation ranks: Australia(13 - Same as 2018), Sweden(18 - fell from 14 in 2018), Finland(14 - up 1 from 2018), Norway(20 - fell from 16 in 2018), Germany(22- fell from 17 in 2018), Netherlands(17 - increase from 23 in 2018), Spain(32 - fell from 30 in 2018), South Korea(55 - fell from 49 in 2018), UK(45 - rose from 57 in 2018, tied with Laos), France(60 - fell from 61), Brazil(116 - fell from 106 in 2018), China(110 - improved from 112), USA(128 - fell from 121), India(141 - fell from 136 in 2018), Russia(154 - Same as 2018)

Big OOF at that 128 rank. USA between Saudi Arabia & South Africa in that ranking, W O W.

On the other hand, my country fell down to rank 60, which sounds perfectly in line with the fascist ways our government have been repeatedly deploying in order to oppress/suppress popular movements like the Yellow Vests. I hate everything about Macron so damn fucking much.

Fascist? the Yellow Vests have fascist Le Pen supporters among them and many Alt-Right movements around the world have co-opted the Yellow Vest as their symbol

Don't ever come to Mexico. Seriously.

Interesting to know my country is just above North Korea, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and Afghanistan though!

US deteriorated every year since 2016, huh? Wonder if that correlates with anything?

The consecutive year drop can't be a coincidence, obviously. But to be fair, the US was previously ranked between 114 at it's highest to 122 between 2008 and 2015. It just moved up and down, but was never in the super peaceful, or even moderately peaceful category tiers. Now it's just in the bottom tier consistently.

It's incredibly INCREDIBLY dangerous to reduce the Yellow Vest movement to an alt-right movement only. It's way beyond that. Alt-right do make a percentage of people in the Yellow Vest movement, but so are socialists and communists. I should know, I have seen those crowds with my own fucking eyes (especially the first weeks/months of it where ALL of the people were peaceful and absolutely not antagonizing anybody, yet were met with incredible intense police brutality for no legitimate reason whatsoever), and I have communist friends who were part of it several times. Do not let be fooled by Macron wanting you to believe that that popular movement was a fascist alt-right one. It is a populist movement, where so many people from extremely varied backgrounds, a lot of which had never protested before in their lives, decided to join together because they had enough of a LOT of things ALL at once.

It's a complete disservice to the movement to reduce it to an alt-right one, it absolutely wasn't and never has been. It is, however, a populist movement of citizens that are never accounted for, never cared for, and are mostly part of the invisible lower middle class that is getting absolutely DESTROYED by Macron's many attempts at privatizing all areas of life, taking every single penny away from the poorest all the while making laws to help the wealthiest. The Yellow Vest movement is a cry for help, it is disorganized yet organic, it is multi-layered, it is a multi-headed beast with political plurality at its core, which is both a strong and a weak point. It is much more complex than what it looks like, but I do stand my grounds when I say that Macron's response to it has been nothing short of state fascism.

NZ
NZ number 2. Considering the recent mass shooting it does feel a bit unearned, but I guess aside from that we are a pretty peaceful country.

New Zealand is number 2, how? A bastard murdered a whole bunch of people.

From the report

New Zealand maintained or improved its
scores in 22 out of 23 indicators, but deteriorated in the impact of
terrorism because of the 15 March 2019 white-nationalist terror
attack on two mosques in Christchurch, in which 50 people were
killed. Improvements in five other indicators across all three
domains helped New Zealand maintain its rank as the second
most peaceful country in the world.

Hm

I see that you can click on the countries to see why the country got that score. USA lost a lot on 'militarization', which makes sense. The country always seems to be involved in one war or another.

Happy about Canada's #6. 🇨🇦

Isolated incident.

France's rank was always in the 45-60th range, so it likely does not have much to do with Macron. France has nukes and is heavily militarized and is involved in many international conflicts, which makes it one of the less peaceful Western countries (it is still peaceful by global standards).

I'm actually a little surprised my fatherland of Salone is ranked so high at 52. Even more surprised it was ranked 34th the year prior.

He didn't reduce it he said "some" and "infiltrated"which is the opposite of reductive and is accurate if not specific. you're doing the very thing you're accusing him of doing by generalizing it as wholly populist.

It started that way and is currently poisoned by internal and external influences and bad actors deliberately creating violence- which you yourself note — and I am in no way defending any of the police handling of the early or late protests. But he specifically called out the influences rather than the whole.

I understand how New Zealand would end up so high on a list of this nature but ultimately what this does is continue to erase the struggles and violence experienced by marginalised people here. White supremacy, colonialism, the effects of these persist.
