I've been Involved for a while in a subreddit dedicated to this mysterious song that we've been racking our brains trying to figure out the name of the song and the band behind it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMysteriousSong/

Here is the full song:

The search started actually back in 2007, a user by the name of bluuue posted a snippit from a song on Spiritofradio.ca, best-of-80s.de and other places to try and find the name of a song, they shared a little info such as thinking that they remember it being recorded from a show called "Musik für junge Leute" (Music for Young People) which was a German radio program hosted by Paul Baskerville. They also shared the full song, however all the links for the full version were down so all we had was a small snippit that was originally shared.
http://spiritofradio.ca/SongComments.asp?SongID=1737
http://www.best-of-80s.de/80er-80s-musiksuche-sound-search-27/gesucht-80er-indie-wave-song-15895/

The search sadly went no where and eventually dried up.

In 2017 a snippit of it was posted by Nicolás Zúñiga (Dead Wax Records, a Spanish music label), and then in 2019 a man by the name of Gabriel Vieira (a sound engineer) is the one responsible for really igniting the new search, creating the subreddit, posting it to YT again. With this renewed interest in the song it led to a few things happening. We were finally able to get the full song instead of merely a snippit thanks to the reddit user johnnymetoo.

A youtuber by the name of Whang who has a decent sized audience did a video on it as well around this time,

then an update, which covers a lot of the story behind it (more then I've wrote up here)

Then through this searching Gabriel was also able to get into contact with Paul Baskerville himself (Who still does a radio program in Berlin). He sadly could not recall the specific song but he did play the song on the radio to see if any listeners could help find it and give the info about it.

This interview was hosted on a German radio station called Radio1 which would happen to have none other then the original uploader of the song, bluuue, listening in and hearing this interview. They were able to find the reddit for it and help fill in some blanks and join in the search for it now.

The uploaders name was Lydia and the song was recorded off a German radio station by her brother. He thinks it was from the "Musik für junge Leute" (music for young people) by Paul Baskerville but still isn't 100% sure.

Her identity was verified (she logged in the old accounts on those sites , etc).

Eventually got her brother to post send pictures of the tape and the track listing he had printed for it which gave a good sense of the time period of songs being played and type of music he was recording from the radio at that time.

It has been shared on a few radio stations from Germany to Britian and in the US. However as much as it's reached we haven't had much luck as far as finding moreabout the band or the actual song name. A lot of people that say "they've heard it before" or a friend of a friend knows it but as usual those turn up to be lies or have 0 proof. Absolutely no one has been able to track down the band or singer behind it or the songs real name.

So I decided to make this post on era, it's a longshot but you never know maybe one of you can help or know something about it.

Wow! This is pretty dang cool and fascinating, and the actual song is pretty good too. Like a dark version of an early Depeche Mode song. Hope they eventually can discover who recorded this. Thank you for sharing OP!

Don't know the song, but I love this guy's track listing style. Also like the misheard lyric titles.

The song itself sounds like the generic rock band that was always playing on stage during an '80s B-movie.

I literally used Shazam, lol.
Like The Wind by Antwon01?

In the Youtube video where the full song was originally posted for the first time, the description says somebody uploaded it to Shazam themselves and there is no evidence of that being the name of the song.

ATTENTION: IT'S NOT 'LIKE THE WIND' BY 'ANTWON 01'. We received a lot of emails about it but we need to say someone put it on Shazam without your permission under the name of 'Antwon 01'. It does not exists.

How great would it be if this was the answer and no one on the subreddit thought to just use Shazam.

lol, that would indeed be hilarious. Sadly through it's not found by any software or anything and those that find a song are false positives.

I've decided that since there is no other answer, that must be the answer by default. Like a scientist naming a species, this song is now Like the Wind by Antwon01.

"Anton" is the original name that Lydia (Bluuue) used on those forums. It was just some copyright troll that posted it to shazam.

Are they sure it's not some demo from a band that never made more than a demo?

lmfao it would be amazing

Uh one youtube comment gained minor traction claiming the person was friends with the singer of this song who died in 1995 apparently, but people think they're trolling. The comment also said they made an album but never got it published and this was the only single they got on radios but yeah idk. I doubt that story is true.

This is overall interesting though.

This kind of thing has happened multiple times now, people make a claim that they "know" the song, a friend has the record, their dad has it or remembers it, but they can never provide any actual evidence for it, a news story, the album or name, usually just post the story and then don't respond iwth more info.

That story however does sound interesting but like others they don't seem to want to provide any proof to back it up.

I mean if your friend made a song that 30+ years later caught traction and had many thousands of people wanting to find out more about it and the band behind it would you NOT want to help them and provide your friend with a legacy that they wanted to have back then?

That's why the story doesn't make much sense, he seems to get pissed when people ask for more info or something to back it up and doesn't want to share anymore.

Usually it takes seconds to nail down a pornstar's name and the video she is in. But it takes 10+ year to locate a song's name and its singer?

It's from the 80s, probably from Germany and maybe it was never officially released or it was the only song the band ever recorded.

there are tons of forgotten small bands, and it's not that easy to find stuff from the pre internet era

I guess it was from some band that was probably only together a few months, maybe recorded a few demos, and then split up and probably didn't pursue music careers after that or else they'd probably be aware of the status of some of their music.

Time to bring out the big guns from the 90's, Napster and Netscape. ;)

It's got me interested to find out who it is but nothing so far other than what has already been found.

Really cool, love these mysteries. I was thinking though, what if this is something someone made as a hoax and it really isn't from the 80s.

Once the first big information loss happens with the internet, there will be many of these mystery cases... I envy tomorrow's people a bit.

Its surprising no one has stepped up to claim it, its a great track too a real raw post punk/cold wave/ dark wave sound.

I wonder how much music like this is out there "lost" or otherwise unknown outside of one tape / CD.
There's a fantastic track from a 2006 house mix from Satoshi Tomiie (Japanese house DJ) and I've never seen anyone able to identify it. Thought I had come across a similar sounding vocalist but couldn't find anything from her discography. Maybe one day...

Ha, cool seeing SpiritOfRadio.ca there. It's a fansite for a local radio station's glory days. They definitely would have played something like that back then.

But ya, I don't know if this will ever be identified. For every band you remember from a time period, there were a thousand more that tried and failed, then fell into obscurity. It'd be cool if they did find it, though.

its Pretty nuts no one has found who sang this song . I feel like it was a demo recording that wasn't supposed to be released. The song sounds so familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time.

There is already a ton of lost stuff on the Internet. For example a lot of stuff from the 90s Web is totally gone. There is some archiving obsviously but that is only a small fraction of what existed.

I unironically love this song, been blasting it all week long. Both the original version plus that great cover someone posted above. I hope whoever made this originally gets some recognition.

Germany
My first impression was that it sounds like a song by a local (West)German student band.

I see a bunch of German news sites have picked up the story, maybe it'll lead to something.

So I checked this thread out back when it was first created, and I've had the song running through my head ever since.

It's obvious that this song is carrying some kind of dark secret or curse. Or maybe, if the world is about to perish in a somewhat fishy meteor impact, post punk can save the world?

I'm subscribed to this thread either way.
