I think it's without precedent to have this happen just for the sake of correcting visual effects.
I know in the past, movies have had edits released to remove controversial content, like Aladdin changing the Arabian Nights lyrics, or The Program removing the road hazing scene.

I remember that War of the Worlds (2005) had a couple of unfinished shots, most notably things like marker-tape not being painted out (in part because it's post-production was so rushed) so it got a second rev in theaters.
