For those unaware, SE released IX for modern systems with a number of improvements, such as reworked models, textures, HD fmvs, etc.

However, there is a bug in the game that resets the background music every time you go into a random battle. What does this mean? Most players won't be able to appreciate the game's music the way it was meant to be. New players will likely listen to the first 15-20 seconds of the overworld theme before they get into a battle and it restarts again.

And I don't understand why it has to be this way.

This bug was also present in the X Remaster, but fortunately got a patch to fix it. When VII was released for the PS4... the same bug was present, again. This time, some FMVs were even affected, where the background music kept playing when it shouldn't.

What's up with SE and its ports? They had the chance to fix this in the time it took them to release the Xbone/switch versions for IX... but didn't. To make things even worse, for some reason, there is no analog movement in IX. You can only move in 8 directions, even though the original PS1 release supported analog movement. I don't get it. What's baffling most of all is that last year, they released an awful Chrono Trigger port for steam, but then they did their best to fix it as much as they could.

These new IX ports give me little hope that VII for the switch/xbone will be any different than the bugged PS4 version. Why can't SE put some more care when it comes to their legacy titles?

Edit: links to articles written about the issues:

Final Fantasy IX Switch Is The Same Version As PC And Mobile, Bugs And All (Kotaku)

As Final Fantasy 9 releases on Switch and Xbox with three year old bugs, what will it take for Square to stop releasing bad HD do-overs? (VG247)

Is it okay to say lazy dev? :P I would love to buy the game again, but not that with that shitshow. Also no analog movement again...ugh.

Chrono Trigger probably got fixed because the fanbase was INCREDIBLY vocal about it. The music bug and 8-way movement probably aren't too big of a deal on SE's eyes to warrant fixing it.

At least that's what I think is happening.

Oh man this sucks.
Kinda glad I didn't jump in last night. Maybe my Vita is going to see the light of day again for a play through of the older FF games.

No. Lazy Dev rhetoric isn't true regardless how much want to think otherwise.

I'd say this was just a no-frills porting job. Which brings up a good question. If these are functionally identical to the Steam / PS4 re-releases. I wonder what took them so long...

The same reason they have the audacity to charge 20€ for these ports. People don't care and are buying them.

It's a shame that SE sees fit to release some of their greatest titles in this horrible state. Like, this ain't some shitty game you port for a quick buck, it's goddamn FFVII and FFIX. I cannot comprehend it.

Thanks for this. I was thinking of buying these but I'll wait for a patch, and if there's none, I'll pass on them entirely.

20 eur is not a whole lot, true, but it's the same price as Okami HD or Hollow Knight, to put into perspective. More recent, better adapted games, and mostly bug free as far as I know.

It's unacceptable for such an old game.

Really hope they put a little bit of extra love into FF7 due to its legendary status.

Not holding my breath though.

I think so too but that shouldn't be necessary for games like VII and IX. It sucks.

Here's hoping that the eventual VIII port is free of these kind of bugs.

This is not acceptable. I'd gladly pay 20€ for one of my favourite games of all time but not without being able to enjoy the fantastic soundtrack

It's not only that, the UI is still oversized, still a copious amount of input lag, controls are worse than PS1 version, pre-rendered backgrounds are noticeably worse than the PS1 version. No way to disable the middle school graphic design border backgrounds.

It's just not the kind of treatment the game deserves. At this point I wouldn't even be surprised if the music is of poorer quality as well.

Why do you guys think SE would fix stuff on Switch/Xbox versions when they didn't bother updating on PS4 ? Their core audience is on PS4 and they don't care there.

Oh man that was super annoying in FF X/X-2 HD and made me stop playing, I'll be sure to avoid this.

Yeah, the technical issues are what will keep me from ever buying this version. Once CT was fixed, I got that. Once this is fixed, I'll get it. Not sooner.

The price they're asking for this is about what I paid for the new God of War. Let that sink in for a second before deciding to nonuple-dip.

If they're gonna a charge a premium for ports of their vintage software, the least they could do is make sure it passes muster.

I feel scammed seriously. I bought the game right after the direct because I have very fond memories of it and it never crossed my mind that they would release an inferior product to the original PS1 game. What irks me the most is the loss of proper analog controis.

I seriously consider skipping future releases from SE altogether. They just don't deserve my money.

Hollow Knight is full of bugs though

Since I have it on PS1 and PC I guess I already have the best versions and can skip high priced inferior port of an amazing game.

I am really upset. Bought this without checking the relateds thread first becasue I tought how can you fuck up the simple port of a classic. Seems like Square found a way.

I would love to pick it up on the Switch so I can consider retiring it from my Vita, but this is game-breaking for me. I wouldn't be able to stand the music, and I wouldn't be able to ignore it.

I had a feeling this would be the case. That's a real shame. Music is a big part of the charm of these games.

I decided to do a Platinum run of FFVII on the PS4 as it's my favourite game of all time and was due another play through. Then I got to the world map and I got my first sound bugs. Sound Effects missing on some spells and summons, wrong music playing in places. Absolutely ruined it for me as a long time player. Deleted it from my hard drive never to be played again and fired up my Vita and played the PSone classic on there instead to get my FFVII fix.

Extremely sad to see the issues still not addressed on the Switch versions.

A not-inconsiderable part of my nostalgia for these games is somehow tied to hearing the world map themes kick back up in various spots between battles. So uh. What the fuck.

The games deserve a lot more care and attention than they are getting. It is a shame.

I'd really like portable versions to go through but might stick with my PS1 copies at this rate.

Edit: just read about the analog stick thing too. Pathetic. Maybe VIII is better off staying away.

How is $20 premium price? That's budget price.

Also the mentality that you can't charge normal price ($60) for older software is strange imo. A game is a game is a game is game is a game not matter when it was made. Final Fantasy IX competes for you time as does God of War as does World of Warcraft as does Halo MC Edition. As long as the game is in good shape there should be no reason for devs/publishers to take less then $50 for a re-release of an older game. Sure they can lower the price as there is little to no dev cost but they don't have to.

I'll gladly pay $60 today for a re-release of GTA San Andreas for Switch/(PS4/XboxOne) but I would pay maximum $20 for God of War (PS4). The former is a good game that I would love to play again, the latter doesn't interest me more then I would like to play it for a small price.
