Because "literally" a bunch of non RPGs are branded as such in the press. FFS, Monster Hunter just won best RPG. Anymore, having at least two dialogue options and a random skill tree = "RPG!!!". Like I said, they have my money anyway.
Look at Obsidians list of games;
KOTOR 2
Alpha Protocol
New Vegas
Stick of Truth
Pillers of Eternity
Tyranny
Pillers of Eternity 2

All real RPGs

Bioware:
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
KOTOR
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Dragon Age
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 3
Dragon Age 3

All real RPGs (sort of). But yeah, it's totally impossible to think Obsidian is making a non RPG, especially when they aren't the only force behind it now.

Cain and Boyarsky on this IP makes me so fucking happy and excited.

I hope Sawyer and Heins collaborate for another project together.

Obsidian has 4 capable and proven directors that now have the resources to make what they want. It’s insane to think what Microsoft have on their hands now.

Cool, so I guess i don't need to worry about any other games ever again then?
If they own the rights to a sequel wouldn’t we say they may as well be de facto owners of the IP?

How do you continue the IP without a sequel?
It's more that Take Two can't farm it out to someone else to do a sequel.
Super curious to see if this will get a sequel. I’m assuming it will be successful, but Take Two one the publishing rights for the first so they must have some sort of right of first refusal?
If this is successful (jesus, how can this not be?) the Microsoft and Take Two would work out a deal. Makes no sense to either for it to sit in the vault making no one any money.

Why did you leave out MDK 2 and why did the other guy leave out the Tank Game and Dungeon Siege?

This looks like The Precursors with a serious budget.
And a bit of Vampire Bloodlines on top (give it shares the same two directors at the helm.

They could actually have something great on their hands.

I felt this when the acquisition was made official, but with this reveal Obsidian have solidified themselves as the crown jewel of Microsoft’s first party stable, IMO.

I'm very excited for this. I wasn't sure about the aesthetic from the teaser images, but the trailer looked great overall and the implication from the trailer that the old west stuff is an intentionally terrible corporate pastiche makes it actually pretty hilarious instead of just tired and derivative.

I'm surprised that it looked really nice visually, specially the facial animation seemed very decent. I was expecting jank, but it was ok.

Looks more polished than any Fallout game ever, I think the PoE series made Obsidian more technically efficient.

Until we get to see more of what's actually under the hood, not sold on it being an "RPG" like Fallout, or an RPG at all. Just having a three branch dialogue tree doesn't make it one. Probably going to get it regardless though, since I'm not against another Borderlands.
One year ago when this project was first announced, this is what it was announced as:
Studio Partner: Obsidian Entertainment
Game: Unannounced RPG

The role-playing veterans at Obsidian are using their Private Division partnership to reunite original Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky for a new game set in a new universe.

“It was the opportunity to work with Tim on a new IP that we were creating from scratch again, because we did it on Fallout and Arcanum and those were great experiences and I just missed doing that, says Boyarsky, who most recently worked on Diablo III for Blizzard. “I missed working on single-player, in-depth RPGs with a lot of choice, consequence, and reactivity. I like making other types of games, but there is something special about the kind of games we started with Fallout that really appeals to us and speaks to us creatively.”

The duo plans to reveal more about the project at a later date, but Cain says “If people have liked our previous RPGs they're going to like this one in terms of how we make reactive worlds and especially our style of humor.”
