I have a Cryorig H5 Air Cooler and I am trying to OC my 9900K. At stock settings, when running Realbench Stress bench, the CPU hits 91-92 degrees C. Should I just not OC this CPU because my Air Cooler isn't sufficient?

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Just gonna save myself some time and quote my post from that thread:
Hey folks, I was looking to upgrade my desktop with a new CPU, and found I'd also need a new motherboard for the chip I was eyeing (i7 8700K).

My current specs, for the record:
  • EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC
  • Intel i5 6600K @ 4.7GHz
  • 8GBx2 DDR4 RAM @ 2400MHz
  • Some kind of MSI motherboard from 2015 for the LGA 1151 chipset. Z170A, I believe.
  • A brand spankin' new Platinum-rated fully modular 600w PSU I bought last year when my old one failed
Since I'm looking for a new CPU, I figured I might as well ask around here. I plan on sticking with Intel, since the 8700K seems like a great balance of power and affordability, but I was curious what you folks think. And if I did go for that chip, what kind of motherboard and memory would complement it best? Do I really need faster memory, or will my current RAM suffice?

I'm also still using the classic Hyper 212 Evo for CPU cooling, but my case does have plenty of space for other coolers, if that's not going to be sufficient for the 8700K (I don't get into hardcore overclocks, I just push the chip to reasonably higher clock speeds).

Apologies if this isn't the place to ask about this.
TL;DR, I don't know what motherboard, CPU, or RAM to buy, even though I kinda want an 8700K.

So I bought another 8GB ram to compliment my new RTX 2070 purchase and while I am knee deep in this I might as well continue, right?

I was wondering if I should upgrade my CPU. I have an i7 [email protected]. But my motherboard (Z170-P) only supports up to i7 7700. And it seems like that a tiny performance gain I'll have with that purchase wouldn't justify the 400 dollars I'll have to spend. And I don't have the funds to spend on a new motherboard, unfortunately.

What do you all think?

That's a big nope from me.
You'll get maybe 200-300 MHz more out of the 7700k in compassion to the 6700k. Clock for clock they have the exact same performance, I don't think spending $400 is worth a %7 increased CPU speed (at best!).
If you are having problems reaching steady 60 fps in some of your games because of the 6700k: save up, wait for Ryzen 3000 an reevaluate then. Even if you want to go with Intel. If a 3700x is a half descent improvement over the 2700x Intel prices should start to go down.

I love you guys replacing 4 & 5 years old rig while I'm sporting a i5-2500 for 10 years.
I'm still rocking a phenom II x4 from 10 years ago, completely unbalanced with a gtx960! I've been feeling the itch to upgrade but it's been a low priority in life right now. Unfortunately it's in a Dell box so it'll have to be a full build.

Haha! Yep, 2600k here and I feel like we've been spoiled by how good that gen was. If the rumours of 12 and 16 core Zen 3 chips are real though, I'll finally upgrade this year. Seems like a safe bet those chips will also be future proof for another decade.

Just a shame the GPU market looks to be in for an underwhelming year. Think I'll hold onto my 1070 until the end of 2020 at this rate.

So my PC died. It's an 8 year old system so I'm ready to fully replace it. Ideally I want a system that's gonna last me a long time again, but I'm not hardcore into PC games. I want to be able to play them well, but again, I'm mostly a console gamer and if I play games on it they're mostly indie games. I will say I'm planning on playing Cyberpunk and Serious Sam 4 on it (and others no doubt) so it has to be powerful enough to run those at least (no idea if the requirements are already known or not). I have no idea of what to choose so I had a buddy take a look and we came up with this:

The website is Dutch as I'm probably gonna buy it from there, hopefully that isn't a problem.

This price is a tad high for my liking, so if anyone could take a look and see if there's anything that I might not need I'd appreciate it. Ideally I'm looking at about €1200,-

Thanks in advance for looking.

Held onto my i7-920 build from 2008 for dear life for as long as I could. It was time though, even WoW(bought the rig for WotLK), was saying fuck off with this shit when trying more recent expansions. Still ran ok, but recommending med or low settings today, where once it screamed at Ultra in the same game.

Though really it still handled most current games alright with a GTX 970 surprisingly. But the upgrade to a modern machine made a world of diff.

Heh I only just this year moved on from an i7 860 myself. It was amazing what it was still able to cope with really. I never even overclocked it and it was still capable of playing most games despite what thier minimum specs said.

My itch is too strong now so this Spring is finally my time for a full upgrade. Even getting a new case, something I haven't done in ~15 years.

I wonder why it got better all the sudden. Sure, you still have overpriced graphic cards like the Radeon VII, but nvidia cards are reasonably priced. Why even buy the Radeon VII when you can get the rtx 2080.

I caved in and bought a brand new Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ For 48,000 yen. Sadly it doesn't come with the games but for that price, I think it's not too bad. Considering they're selling the the rx 590 for 40,000 yen..like really? For 8000 yen more, you get a way better card.

1 x MSI B450M PRO-M2, socket AM4 moederbord€ 75,-
1 x Corsair 16 GB DDR4-2400 Kit werkgeheugen€ 96,90

Overall that's a bit cheaper at about €1350,- Is it a significant downgrade or is it comparable or should I just pony up and go i7? Also, I picked a mid-range motherboard (I think), but maybe a €45 board is just as good? I can't really see any differences in them.

i'm thinking of getting a Ryzen CPU when the new ones come out however i'm worried that my PSU might not handle it.

i'm a bit of a noob but my 6700K says it has a 91W TDP but a Ryzen 2700X has a 105W TDP. Apparently the new CPUs could go up to about ~140W if they use 16 cores. I'm wanting the best CPU they release. if it's a 16c/32t cpu then i'm buying it.

according to online calculators they recommend my system a 650W PSU and I have a 750W installed. if I'm increasing the TDP of my CPU by as much as ~50W should I upgrade? I'm my system is only using ~650W right now then would i better off getting a new PSU if i'm using 700 out of 750W?

I'm not sure if i should drop the money on a new PSU now before the CPUS come out. Prices don't vary too much so I will probably go for a 1000W PSU instead of 850W. Other than a new CPU i probably won't be upgrading anything else in my PC. i've got as much storage drives as i want/need, i won't be putting any new fans in, any more PCI cards (only a GPU/Soundcard currently), and i'm all out of USB ports.

There's no way you're actually using 650W with just a single GPU. Your 750W PSU should be plenty.

It depends on what else is in your build, what the estimated max power usage comes out to. I'm assuming the online calculator didn't say your build actually uses up to 650W.

If you're running an SLI/crossfire setup or a power hungry top-end GPU, it's possible an upgrade might be in order, but chances are another 50W TDP isn't going to put you close enough to 750W to worry about. Assuming it's a decent rated/quality model that can actually handle 750W.

If you do go Ryzen, try for faster RAM. It tends to make more of a difference than on the Intel side. DDR4 3000 is a pretty common choice.

If it saves some cash, a ~550W PSU can easily handle that build.

In extreme cpu limited scenarios you may see 5 to 10% difference. But you most use cases you won't notice any difference at all. AMD have majorly stepped up their IPC and are competitive again. Rumor is that it was their mid range processor releasing later this year that outperformed the i9 in IPC.

So you may actually want to drop a cheap ryzen 3 in there and replace it when the Zen 2 chips drop. Just make sure you update the motherboard bios.

Stopgap upgrade? I'd replace the GPU. If you're at the lower end of your budget, get an RTX 2070 (~$500). Or if you want to splurge a bit, go for RTX 2080 (~$700). I would personally go with the latter.

Thanks! Will start looking at benches comparing a 980ti to a 2080 and see if I can convince myself it's worth $700. Deep down I know I should wait a bit longer, but I was pretty tempted seeing how much the 2080ti outperforms a 980ti. Shaving $400+ off that price gets things a little more compelling.

Any opinions on the Corsair K70 keyboard?
I have the K65 LUX RGB (tenkeyless, red switches). First mech keyboard I've used full time. Great for gaming, played lots of Overwatch with it. At 2.5 years of moderate-to-heavy use, some of my WASD keycaps are a bit worn, but everything works just fine. (I'm using the alternate WASD keys included in the box, so I could always put the standard keys back on if it really bugged me.)

If I did a ton of writing/programming, I might try out a different switch style. But the Reds work for me for gaming, and aren't very loud.

I am thinking of finally upgrading my my video card and adding more ram to my 3.5 year old build (outside of video card). I've been pushing a gtx 770 2gb for so long. I have an overclocked i5-6600k and 8 gigs of ddr4 ram. I am thinking of pushing it up to a faster 16gb of RAM and the upcoming 1660 gtx TI. I do 1920 x 1200 gaming, writing and photo editing on my PC. Should those upgrades suffice?

There's several variations of the K70 and K65. Some RGB, some single color; various switch types; "LUX" models have an aluminum housing. But in general, yes, the K65 signifies tenkeyless. (I normally go with a full keyboard, but needed it to fit my keyboard tray at the time.)

I've had my k70 since 2013 and it still works great.
First mech kb I had was the first k95. Then I replaced it a k70 lux rgb with the mx speed switches. then i replaced that with a k70 mk 2 in white, also with mx speed switches. my first k95 is still being used at work and is still kickin'. they are fine keyboards.

You might want to look at your local craigslist for 1080ti's before buying a 1080. With many of them the warranties transfer and last for years.

I see a number of 1080ti's on my local market for ~550. You'd be able to drive 144 frames on most games at 1440p with a 1080ti and your 4790k

So Mentioned a day or so ago that a Tower with a Titan landed in my lap. The tower is equipped with an AIO, but the processor's idle temps are 80c - 100c. So, it's hardly reaching it's potential and it may or may not melt through the case.

I've tried reapplying thermal paste, but that only knocked about 10c off the idle tems and it gets back to 100 anyway.

Is there any chance the AIO's pump isn't hooked up? The BIOS doesn't seem to recognize AIO coolers, but what are the odds that the pump is working anyway?

Finally, I was looking at aftermarket coolers. I've been tempted to just buy a stock intel cooler for 8 bucks, since I've no plans on overclocking the processor. But I've also seen this cooler recommended https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Maste...602618&sr=8-5&keywords=cooler+master+heatsink.

Is that thing overkill? I'm having a hard time imagining how it fits into a PC case without gravity damaging the board, if that makes sense.

edit: if it matters, the processor is an i7 4790 K

Big thanks to the post, just built my mi range spec AMD machine - working perfect! Thank you Era.

But I do have one small question:
I am using a case with a perspex window, the case and the motherboard have dull Red lights, but honest I can hardly see anyting - if its relativly cheap could I put a small strip of LEDs inside the case to just show it off - they don't need to be all singing dancing flashing, plain white is fine.

What do I shop for and how do they connect?
My motherboard is Gigabyte - GA AB350 Gaming
PSU - Corsair CA 650M
(I own a cutable strip of LEDs, could they be used, or best to purchase something?, ideally looking for 30cm worth of a strip)

i know ca prices tend to be a tad higher, but I bought my k70 mk2 se from bby (US) last week for $130 USD. some other options to look at might be the coolermaster ck552 at hyperx alloy keyboards, both also available at bby. i bought my son the coolermaster keyboard for xmas for $40, its rgb and has gateron red switches. pretty nice for the price and they retail for $60. the hyperx prices are similar to corsairs kb though.

My PSU died after serving for 7 years with around 95% of that time being on all day *salutes*

Which brands are now considered good? I have heard about Seasonic over the years.

I hear good things about CM keyboards but that model has no wrist rest, USB pass through or volume control, which are all things that I would like.

When I search PSUs these days, it's Corsair, EVGA and SeaSonic, with potential opening for be quiet! (not that prevalent here in the states) or Antec (some are built by seasonic), depending on the model.

There are several PSU tier lists out there, like this one. Not a hard and fast rule, but can be used as a general guideline. Don't have to go Tier 1, but try to avoid the bottom tiers.

I was tempted to buy an RX580 8gb for under 30,000. It's cheaper than most of the 1060 6gbs at the moment.
