Nearly every USB C cable at my house has a USB-A on the end I would otherwise plug into my computer and the 1 device that didn't come with that still functions perfectly with any USB C-A cable. USB type C doesn't really do anything type-a can't right now barring eGPU's over thunderbolt and display output and that's limited to a select subset of them that I can't see working over a front case port so any "future proofing" would be pointless on a Desktop.
well that makes me feel better. I'll go with the cases I like then. cheers.

Ok, I've decided that I'm going to go ahead and build a PC for my 10 year son with him. Now since I'll only be using it sparingly and he's only into Roblox and Fortnite at the moment we really only need something modest. I'll play the occasional game on it such as Apex legends and other PC games I've missed since I left PC gaming. Think my budget will be around $600-$700 since I'll need to get a monitor, mechanical keyboard and mouse. Someone had built with an i3-8100 and RX 580 which probably is good enough for 1080p 60fps in most games I assume. I'm so out of he loop on PC gaming I don't know the equivalents between Nvidias 1060/1070 cards with AMD...

If Roblox and Apex legends are the only games you're playing maybe consider just going for a Ryzen iGPU which is good for 720p gaming and even 1080p low in some games. It's going to be next to impossible to squeeze a good build with a proper monitor, mechanical keyboard, and gaming mouse into a $600 budget with an RX 580 as the GPU. Even with a barebones "good enough" monitor kb/m and no GPU we're hitting close to your ceiling. Yes there are cheaper parts available but I'm not comfortable recommending off-brand components that could affect the longevity of your build.

I'm not sure how you can hit the overall budget, but you can probably safely step down to a Radeon 570/8GB for 1080p@60 in those kind of lighter games.

Oh no. Sorry. I didn't mean i was trying to squeeze the build and monitor into my $600-$700 budget. I'm not including that into my budget and will just buy a decent monitor and other things i need. This budget is just strictly for the PC...

I have a 1080 and play at 1440p, so it'd be crazy overkill to buy a 2080 Ti, right?

I'm upgrading my processor to a 9900k, and the temptation to just go top-of-the-line across the board is strong.

Heya!

Maybe I can get some help here, at present my computer is getting quite "old" to run pretty much anything, was thinking of moving into a 1070ti since I can get that pretty easily but I'm unaware if something else will bottleneck, keep in mind I have really basic user level computer building skills, I'm aware where everything goes but unaware if I'll face any non-compatibility, specially with the mobo gpu socket or whatever you call it, where the GPU goes. (all gaming is on 1080p)

My spec at present is:

MOBO: Z87-HD3
CPU: i5 4670K
GPU: 770
PSU: might change that since the fan is noisy as hell so suggestions would be good as well :)

Basically what I'd like to know is: Can I put a 1070ti here with not many issues? Otherwise, what should I change? I'm golden on RAM and SSD afaik.

Many thanks!

Apologies for self-quote, could someone confirm if I can put an rtx270 here?

I think it's not a problem but I'm unaware if the mobo can have some kind of compatibility issue since it's quite old. Checked the PSU and it's a corsair CX650

Oh lol that makes more sense here's a a nice solid build with a GPU and some slightly higher end components then.

So I just upgraded to a ASUS PG279Q Monitor and a RTX 2080 (upgrade from a GTX970). I'm still rocking a 3570k @ 4.6. My plan was to go I7 9700k in a couple of weeks... but I'm thinking now maybe holding off to see how good Ryzen 3000 is... It's planned for mid year right? 9900k is crazy expensive and 9700k looks like a side grade from the 8700k with the removal of HT. I've considered the 2700x as well.

My goal is 100+ 1440p gaming. I generally only upgrade once every 4 or so years.

Thoughts?

Every CPU on the market with maybe the exception of a OC'd 5ghz 9900k will be a bottleneck in some games at ultra 1440p gaming if you want framerates exceeding 100fps.

The RTX 2080 cards are finally stating to see some minor sales around me and it's getting tempting. Even sale price it's high but I now have the bug.

I have the following:
i5 4670K OCd to 3.4 ghz (it's not easy to keep stable at anything higher)
16 GB of ram
GTX 980

I am itching to replace my GTX980 to provide me 60fps in 1440p gaming. I fear that games like Battlefield V and Anthem will be still held back by my CPU. The last couple of Battlefield games have been a rough going for me, even at lower settings. I'd struggle to maintain north of 50fps.

Should I just start saving to go all-in or piece meal it to take advantage of a ~$120 savings on the RTX2080? Ultimately, I'd like to a complete rebuild but for right now, if I could get by on 1400p@60fps solid, I'd be super happy.

You could just go one up and get the i7 from that generation to get rid of the bottleneck. I'm sure it can't be that expensive getting a used one from eBay.

What you have will probably be more than enough for a couple of years, at least until nextgen console ports start coming out.

$200-300 budget
1080p
Perfectly fine for many years with a 7870 2gb

I feel like I can wait for these Navi cards to come, but would that be worth it or would getting something like a 580 be along the same lines of an upgrade to that 7870? Or is there more value/future proofing with the Navi's that I'd do good waiting for?

Ok, so with a 9700k/290x.....is 650W enough or should I go to 750W?

Right now I'm at 550, but I'm thinking might be better to up a little.

We know nothing about Navi yet. Right now if your CPU can keep up an 1060 or 580 will do just fine.

Go for an 9700K or even 9600K, it'll be fine.

I was going to hold off on purchasing a new monitor after I have gathered the parts for my new build but I couldn't pass up this deal. Pulled the trigger on the Alienware 34" AW3418DW at Dell's website for $799.99 (plus tax, free shipping). There's also a $75 Dell eGift Card included with the purchase, and if you opted into their Dell Advantage rewards (free to join), that's another $23. Plus, using eBates, they're giving 10% cash back on Dell, so I should be getting ~$80 back from that.

If anyone's interested, I think the sale started yesterday and will end today:

My used 1070 came in today. Playing DQXI at 2688x1512, 60fps is glorious. Can't believe I only paid $220 for this card. The upgrade from 1060 only cost me $70.

Hey guys,

Thinking of FINALLY going through with building a computer and definitely need help. I know very little when it comes to what's good for my needs. Thought about just getting a premade one but I like the thought of saving money, haha.

In terms of a budget, I'm looking at $1,700 but I can be a little flexible if needed.

In terms of needs, I'll be streaming as well as doing some photoshop/video editing. For the most part, I dont mind if all games run at 1080p/60fps but i am interested in seeing the price difference if I wanted 4k.

I would like to start buying parts as soon as this weekend.

In terms of a monitor/keyboard/mouse and whatnot, it doesnt need to be included in the build but im definitely open to hearing what you guys have just to see what's out there.

As far as overclocking, it's something I don't need right this moment.

I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you!

Guys, after Amazon failed me and delivered my CPU/RAM a day late (yesterday instead of Sunday), I decided to rebuild my PC after I got off work. At 9pm. At 12:30am I POSTed first try, and on 2nd restart installed Windows, no issues. I was brazen enough to zip tie all my cables down and close the case before POST. I'm basically a PC building god.

Now I'm working with a 9700k, 1080ti, 16gb 3200 RAM, and a bunch of random crap I've accumulated over the years. I just ordered a 1440/155hz monitor coming in some time next week.

Unfortunately, we don't really know yet. Depends on how fast the Ryzen 3000 series is clocked. Most games still prefer speed over cores so an 8 core 9900k at 5ghz is more than likely going to be better for gaming than a 12 to 16 core ryzen 3000 at 4.5-4.7 ghz. But if the Ryzen can also hit 5ghz then you have more cores and the speed.

2700x maxes out around 4.2 ghz, I'd skip it and wait for ryzen 3000 if you want 100fps+. I don't know for sure, but my gut feeling is ryzen 3000 will be a nice boost for games.

I picked up the ASUS PG279Q Monitor about 3 months ago as well, it's great monitor. G sync is nice addition to have. I barely worry about the frame rate anymore for games.

I am currently running an R5 2600 with an RTX 2080 and I have no trouble running well over 100fps in most games at 1440p (Resident evil 2 remake 120+ , Forza horizon 4 120+). So Ryzen is more than capable of high frame rates, maybe not quite as high as Intel but easily 100+

Timeframe for this is either April/May, or if more information on the Ryzen 3000 series comes out, I'll push it out when those parts come out.

Any thoughts on this?

You can probably do better with most tower coolers than this particular AIO.
I haven't looked at any benchmarks lately so I'm kinda talking out of my ass but in the very least, you are adding a failure point in the form of the pump.

I can't speak for the newer model but I built a PC with a Corsair H60i that's still going almost 4 years later. I don't actually own it myself anymore but I see it probably once a week at the place I donated it to.

So after being perfectly stable for months, my desktop is suddenly bluescreening to the dreaded "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" stop code.

Nothing was intentionally changed, and it's only done this twice within about a week.. The first time I was just web browsing (shopping for a Mac heh). The second time it was doing nothing, just sitting at desktop.

I honestly have no idea where to begin with this since everything is a champ when stress tested (RAM/CPU/GPU).

I'd start by checking that all of my drivers in device manager are working right and that there are no unknown or duplicate devices. Then, test the memory and secondary storage (HDDs, SSDs). It's a hardware problem somewhere, but probably not your CPU or GPU. I'd guess it's either primary or secondary storage.

EDIT: Also check System logs in Event Viewer to see if there are any clues.

Timeframe for this is either April/May, or if more information on the Ryzen 3000 series comes out, I'll push it out when those parts come out.

Any thoughts on this?

Nothing wrong with it aside from me wishing I had your budget for over the top components.

I'd forgotten b/c it's been like this for so long (so prob not a clue) but in Device Manager there's a device that's missing the driver. It's TUSB3410 Boot Device.

Again, been like that forever but I'm looking into it. I appreciate the suggestions.

I've had the benefit of things working well for a pretty long time so I'm rusty.

Hmm some quick googling shows that that is probably a USB hub in your monitor. See if you can get the drivers from your monitor's manufacturer's website maybe. Might be the problem, I dunno. Hope you get it sorted out.

Yeah thanks, been there a couple of times..

Event Viewer clearly shows the 2 times it crashed, basically an improper shutdown. There's plenty of other noise but nothing near those time stamps.

Edit: Got the stupid device driver by installing LG's terrible screen splitting software from 2015 and then uninstalling it promptly. It leaves the driver behind. The world feels insignificantly better, but I'm pretty sure I've lived with that issue since 2015 so pretty unlikely to be the culprit. Excellent place to start troubleshooting though.

The best/worst part is that it's done it only twice in a week. I mean it would suck if it was doing it constantly, but that would make it a lot easier to troubleshoot.
