Yes, it's still a thing. And no, it's not necessarily retro anymore.

So what are your options?

Another remake/restoration of a PC classic. Not sure if the old Little Wing games hold up like the old Pro Pinball tables do.

Pure Pinball (iOS)
pure_pinball3.jpg

I actually like this one a fair bit. Apparently Pure Pinball was a collection released on Xbox & PC many years ago. This app was to be a modern restoration of those table but the last update was in 2014 and, alas, only T-Rex Savage was ever released. That said it is iOS 11 compatible!

Atomic Pinball Collection* (iOS)
atomic-pinball-ios-3.jpg

576x768bb.jpg

*A note about these two tables. I was hesitant to include them because, quite frankly, the physics suck. The ball is heavy and moves super fast and something about it feels springy, too. But these tables are also very well designed and have obviously had a lot of love put into them. The music & sound design is great and everything looks real nice so it's a shame about the physics. If weird, fast ball physics aren't a problem then I highly recommend these two tables.

There are many other pinball games on iOS and Android that are all subpar crap.

The old Williams & Gottlieb Hall of Fame Collections are totally obsolete. Farsight's Pinball Arcade has made so many advancements to the engine that those games are worthless if you want accuracy and good physics.

DS
Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (DSiWare/3DS eShop)
300x.jpg

really good single table by the Metroid Prime Pinball devs. Similar physics but table is intended to be realistic & possible to build IRL.

I am grateful for digital pinball, and greatly enjoy having the ability to play on-the-go, but there is no replacement for a physical machine. Be sure to check https://pinballmap.com/ for any machines in your area. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area means that I have an easy time finding a local place to slap the silver balls. If you ever get a chance, be sure to visit the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda, Ca. They have a large number of pinballs ranging from ancient bagatelle boards to Pinball 2000, and the newest machines out now.

As for my favorite, I could trot out the usual suspects like The Addams Family, or Funhouse, but I will always go back to Taxi.

Amazing--even in docked mode.

Anybody know what the next Stern Pinball Arcade tables are? I saw someone on Facebook say Big Buck Hunter, but I wasn't sure.

If we're talking favorites, I absolutely love PinBot. I'd love to own one. Congo and World Cup Soccer '94 round out my top 3.

I built a bartop arcade cab and put buttons on the sides for pinball. Running ubuntu with retropie installed and Steam In-Home Streaming Pinball Arcade.
It's a ton of fun. My mom loves it.

Shaney!! YOU DID IT!! Thank you so much!

Pinball is making a huge comeback in cities nationwide. Indianapolis had only about 3-4 tables on location just two years ago and now we have about 60+ games in the city with more being place on route every week. There's a lot of bars, bowling alleys and more that aren't barcades that are buying one or a few pins as the movement continues.

Been wanting to make one. Suggestions for OP:

I'm obsessed with video game pinball, since it's a weird loop of the most video-gamey thing before videogames becoming a video game, and physics and so many weird side stories.

Anyone familiar with Little Wings? or Namco's first arcade game, Gee Bee?

I literally just bought Little Wing's Crystal Caliburn II on iPad today. It's $3.99 and has iOS 11 support.

If you guys remember Pro Pinball you can get it on GoG.com and it still golds up well today. Pro Pinball Timeshock! Ultra Edition is available on just about every platform and it's excellent.

The Pro Pinball games were designed with the real world game limitation in mind and as such Silver Castle is bringing Timeshock to life as we speak!

I've been checking over google multiple times...maybe someone here can help?

I noticed that you can buy the Stern Pinball game physically on Switch...

Does the cartridge comes fully loaded with most tables or is the default cartridge all locked out like the free download and it comes with a voucher to unlock the tables?

Please let me know! Hopefully everything is unlocked...

If you buy the retail game you have all the tables unlocked.

You can also download the free digital version and buy all the tables in a bundle for the same $40 price.

Nice thread! I've got almost a dozen games loaded on my cell phone, but the only one I play with any regularity are the Pinball Arcade titles. The only downside is that I'm starting to get performance issues due to phone background tasks interrupting my games, so I'm tempted to get into the Switch version... but I'm holding out for a portrait mode update first. If Farsight can port TPA and bring its massive backlog of '80s and '90s Williams/Bally tables, though, I'll gladly double dip without hesitation.

I love the little wings story, because at some point fans a physical version of one of the boards!

Also, pinball fans need to hear the Black Knight release party story on an episode of the podcast A Life Well Wasted. It's amazing.

My Grandpa actually owns an old 60s era race car themed pinball machine he picked up long ago, it's in need of some maintenance though sadly, quite a few of the rubber rings are worn out and the art needs a little preservation work on the top art. Works otherwise though

Yay! Been waiting for this thread! Thanks Shaneus!

Hows Stern on the Switch? Been wanting to track down a physical copy, but there werent a lot of details out there when I checked right after release

It's great as portable Stern you might imagine it would but

/nitpicking mode ON

It's virtually the same as on PS4. Latest physics mode for all the tables.
A patch just added online leaderboards but still no sign of the promised TATE(portrait) mode.
That also means that like the other version it's painfully clear how much lower the production values are for the new pinballs compared to the tables "imported" from TPA.
There's a staggering difference in poly-count between, say, Ghosbusters (awesome game) and The Last Action Hero let alone something like The Addams Family. The former looks like it was built strictly to play on an ancient iPad Mini and doesn't look that different from that platform side by side besides having better lighting; I mean the far right ramp in Mustang is laughable in how low poly it is. The DOT Matrix for all the new tables isn't properly dotted (they're correct on mobile versions). The audio in portable mode is, depending on the table, akin to hearing a 32kbps mp3 through an open tincan. Sometimes the ball can drop a few frames, like a little stutter, out of nowhere, although it seems less so in portable mode. Still, I'm fixated with framerate and I tell you it's really minor... tho I want to see it fixed. I don't remember if it happens on PS4 but it does on mobile, seems to be related to the online connection.

That being said, happy I bought it but I can't wait for The Pinball Arcade proper.

For people asking about Stern Pinball on Switch, get it! you won't regret it.
Runs beautifully and a patch for online leaderboards should be coming soon. Might even be out in the US already as far as I've heard. The only negative is that loading times from menu to table are a bit longer than on PS4, etc. Somewhere between 25 and 46 seconds as far as I've measured.
All the tables are on the card if you buy it physically.
I've already put over 10 hours into the Ghostbusters table alone.

Oh and the regular Pinball Arcade is coming to Switch as well before summer if everything goes well.
Can't wait to buy every single dyeable yet again for the 3 and sometimes 4th time, not even counting all the old physical version on PS2,PS3,360, Wii, 3DS, PSP.

Not sure if it will be for everyone, but I just love putting this channel on and waste a couple of hours.

I'd love to play some good digital pinball but I find in most games I try it's too difficult to see what's happening on the board.

My favorite to this day is still Pinball Fantasies.

Happy to take on all suggestions! I created the OP while at work, so anything you think should be in there I'll gladly copypasta. Just wanted to get something rolling :) Like all your ideas thus far, will put them in soon.

Oh man, I love me some pinball. There's just something much more visceral in playing a real game of it vs older arcade games. I'm pretty terrible but once I learned some basic tips I've been able to win a free game here and there. The first time the free game knocker went off it scared me so much I ended up draining the ball. I thought something blew up in the machine!

Thanks for the advice on the Switch version, going to pick it up. I'm lucky enough to have real pinball machines at work so it should fill the void.

Thanks buddy, I will definitely order it then.

While I love me some pinball, it's more for my GF's stepfather who's really sick, I'll lend him my Switch for a couple days since he's a big pinball fan so that will keep him entertained. :)

Good to know there's value to have the cartridge then, I'll play it every now and then.

I'll take my Pinball FX2 and be happy for the rest of my life with it.

Seriously, from 2011-present I'm obsessed with my high scores in that game and it's turned me into one of the highest scorers in the game. I'm ranked about 2000 out of everyone's scores combined.

Naturally, it'd be nice if it was an authentic simulation in terms of physics, but the themes and tables designs make up for it.

Awesome OT.
I love Pinball. Always have.
For some reason we owned a Camelot table when I was young. Had it until we had to move when I was like 13.
It was not the most sophisticated pinball table ever made, but it was a pinball machine nonetheless.
I cannot even tell you how many hours of my life I spent playing it.

I somehow never heard of Jersey Jack until this thread, and he is about an hour away from me, if that.
I now know what I want one day.

Jersey Jack is making the best pinball games out of all the current manufacturers. Extremely high quality, cram-packed with features, really well designed games.

As far as I know, the first videogame pinball: Raster Blaster. Those shapes on the thumper bumbers are Apple logos since this was on the Apple ][.
The layout is an unlicensed copy of Williams' Firepower by Steve Ritchie (best known as the voice of Shao Khan from the MK games).

He got copied a lot in the early days of video pinball; Raster Blaster is a knockoff of his Black Knight table.

You mean Dave's Midnight Magic was a knockoff of Black Knight ;)

Also, TIL that Raster Blaster and Dave's Midnight Magic have nothing to do with each other. I thought they were made by the same people.

^ you guys are my kinda people (aka esoteric pinball nerds)

Another shameless plug for my twitter @pindypinball follow and tweet at me, i like posting & retweeting stuff like that

Speaking of Ritchie, who's your favorite pinball designer and who do you consider to be the best designers in its history?

Also, what's your favorite era of games?

Personally, I think Pat Lawlor is my fav, his games just speak to me. Dialed In was everything I wanted from an untethered Lawlor game. He's followed by Ritchie, but I also love Barry Oursler & Dennis Nordman. And of course John Popadiuk had an incredible stint of 4 of the greatest games ever made.

Favorite era, though, is that System 11 series. Maybe not the best games but there's a certain charm to them I just love. Plus they're all solid & fun and you can get them for relatively cheap.

Favorite table:

#1 Attack From Mars - utterly brilliant, easy to understand, never gets old

I love Pinball Arcade, although I have not repurchased the tables for the PS4 era. I would also argue that Williams Pinball Hall of Fame still holds up on Wii. The controllers make for a pretty great experience.

I was quite sad to see the Pinball Wizard Arcade in Pelham NH close about a year ago...

It's just hard to go back to Williams HoF after playing much better versions of the same tables on TPA.

Check out pinballmap.com, you may be surprised to find there's more pinball around you than you expected.
