Nice to hear a solid honest perspective on Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I was going to jump on it right after the holiday, but I think I'll wait to hear more reactions. The initial wave of responses I heard on other podcasts were kind of gushy, probably from previous fans of the franchise.

Fact-checking Phil: there totally was a theme song for the Gremlins cereal:

Gremlins, Gremlins, bite after bite, what a tasty way to satisfy your Gremlins appetite!

I enjoyed listening to CJ, Greg, Kevin, and Rich watch the game awards but man was it long. I didn't last the full show.

I think Phil has a job waiting for him at IGN if he ever feels like it. They like impressions apparently.

Not a fan of the new ending theme?
Replying after giving it more time...

It's threefold. First, I just don't care for the jingle all that much. Secondly, it's really hard to get over the fact that for ten years you used the same one and now it is differently; it was the one consistent musical choice throughout the decade. Lastly, I don't know if it is mixing or just the jingle itself, but it's loud and startling and doesn't lead to the winding down of the podcast like the old piano theme used to do.

Nice episode this week. Glad to hear Larrabee back on the show.

Outerlands is finally out, and one of the first things I remember is Mike complaining about them asking for money on Kickstarter. lol
It took like 4 years, but they're finally done at least.

Pretty shocked that it's only two of the episodes out with the rest coming next year. Two and a half years late and counting.

Quite liked the 1up show so should hopefully be interesting eventually.

The game preservation episodes are good. Haven't watched the other set yet. They're certainly well produced and I don't regret paying for them, but considering the reality now with Patreon, it's just a reminder of how much the internet has changed when it comes to fan funded projects (and how fans will pay for ex-game journalists to make their own videos lol).

None of the subjects they announced the episodes were about seemed of that much interest to me but as you say i'm sure it will be well made. I thought their doc about the making of The Last of Us was very good.

Since the Kickstarter was launched the amount of video about games I watch has decreased dramatically. Used to watch stuff like Co-Op, Giant bomb quick looks etc regularly but can't remember the last time I watched anything that wasn't a trailer. Even the Danny O'Dwyer stuff which looks really interesting seems like too much of a time investment to me now.

I do miss the well produced video though, particularly with streaming basically killing any incentive to create a video that requires going out to shoot footage. The way they shot Mike Mika's crazy game basement really puts into perspective how much game crap he's storing there and it's something that even pictures wouldn't do justice.

I was playing some of that Pinball FX3 today, and what a great package. The DOOM board is so much fun.

The minimap in Xenoblade doesn't show you height differences to your target but the compass does. If the waypoint is above you there will be an arrow pointing up just above the diamond that shows the distance to target.

Edit: love that Greg is going to be focusing on Edith Finch for "the next couple of weeks." That's gonna be a pretty deep dive for a 2.5 hour game :)

2.5 hours definitely sounds like a two week run for me :)

Yeah, Hellblade took me about six weeks. Edith Finch took me three or four. This is called "being old."

Which explains why the announcement that God of War is a ~30-hour experience means I may opt out of one of my favorite series.

Also, this episode plus the GOTY episode provided me with considerably more entertainment (and infinitely less frustration) than the, what? 25 hours of Giant Bomb fuckery I listened to.

Yes. I like the idea of the group collaboration to build a list for the site but by the end most of the Giant Bomb conversation was so negative. Seemed like an odd way to cap off a great year of gaming.

That's true but the chapter I was describing had you go in the opposite direction (distance counting up) 2 floors up and back around the horn near where you started. It was unhelpful. I am in Chapter 7 now and at another spot where the map does me no favors.

Yeah, the map is definitely bad. I also don't understand why the map is separate from the fast travel map that's broken into a bunch of tinier maps that are connected I guess but it's not obvious how?

Oh well, back to core farming...

White Castle... always a mistake. Can't think of a single time after WC where I thought, "yep. That was a good idea".
But listening to you guys I guess WC isn't on the west coast? Or Canada for that matter.

Oh wait, here comes Sewart to the rescue with the truth.

Edit: loved the Chicago talk

Ethan made a great point with the whole 'reddit army' thing.

Once people know that they're entitled to some information, people will take to the streets to fight against anyone that either doesn't provide that information or hides that information. Before, it was accepted that we didn't get rates. Now it's expected.

I've blitzed through the GOTY Podcast and the subsequent one whilst at work today.
Tell you what, after hearing hours and hours of arguments over Dream Daddy it was nice to hear these voices again.
