It was a pitch poster to sell it to a movie studio to fund it.

Reminds me of Crash.
I think it's an excellent take on the thing suggested by the poster, but as an old school Sonic fan who hasn't properly followed it in years, it's contrary to my internal vision of Sonic - the Detective Pikachu look was probably what I'd imagine from a live action Sonic. Like, a verbatim but 3D version of the old sprite and box art. I admit I am irrationally afraid of a realistic looking Sonic but if that's what the fans want, then there's no reason to worry about what one elderly gamer thinks.
