The island is alive! Your newfound home will change with day/night cycles as you explore and uncover its secrets. Hunt (or be hunted by!) animals for food and meet the local inhabitants, who aren’t necessarily pleased to see you. Get quests from a Mysterious Stranger or find them washed up on the shore. Prepare to trek into a procedurally generated wilderness, with a variety of biomes, for an adventure that’s unique to every player.

More info can be found on their Learn More page. Me and my friends love playing The Escapists! This looks like a huge departure from the series, and looks really innovative and fun!

I don't know when, but at some point the themes of this game are going to blow up in their face into some controversy.

So, use a bunch of real world native racial stereotypes, but replace the natives with monkeys?

Who the fuck greenlit this racist bullshit?

Is the problem here that you enter an unknown world and kill the hostile inhabitants of that world for your own good?

Because isn't that what what like 90% of the games out there does?

It has clear colonialist themes, but it stems from a very obvious Robinson Crusoe trope and I don't see how it is in any way more problematic than a standard Tomb Raider, CoD, Anno etc.

Anyway, I always feel like we're past the survival trend, but games like this still seem to perform commercially so what do I know. The trailer makes it look fun.

I don't know if I'm missing your point but there are very clearly distinct people and monkeys in the trailer.

Wait, why are the enemies wearing African style tribal masks? Why do the enemies have a darker skin tone while the good guys are more light skinned? Are you meant to be white marooned survivors fighting against Africans, pillaging the resources...is this a colonialism sim? I'm genuinely curious if Team17 understood the implications.

Yeah, Robinson Crusoe was a very racist book...Those other games have problematic elements. CoD is American military propaganda. It seems like you're resorting to whataboutism and acting like because it's using Robinson Crusoe tropes, that's ok?

Take over an island and enslave the monkeys! That does not sound like a good premise for a game at all, given the obvious colonial connotations, not least from a British studio. I doubt they were trying to be hurtful, but they really ought to change some of the themes of the game.

There are deserted island survival sims that don't invoke racism, though. Like The Forest.
Maybe I’m ignorant here but is it solely that the natives are portrayed as darker skinned cannibals, I mean sure I get that’s a stereotype and they can do better. But I’m not seeing colonialism sim as it seems more like ship wreck and trying to survive. The person who made the monkey comment was full of shit as everyone here can tell that they used monkeys to be cute rather than a stand in for black people.
