People were mad salty about the $300 price point since they were led to believe that the Switch would be $250 thanks to suppose leakers. That and 1, 2 Switch, ARMS, and motion controls gave hardcore gamers PTSD of the Wii.

Also paid online, and Nintendo essentially admitting that they were launching the system before their online network was even ready.

They didn't have a proper reveal yet. Even Microsoft. They will when they show next gen games. You don't sell your console with a video of gears 5 where you have to zoom 10x to see a difference between the Xbox one x and Xbox series x versions...

Yeah, this has been an anticlimactic rollout, especially on the Sony side. At least the news is good, especially on the Xbox side where it's all been positive.

PS4's reveal trump both, easily. Microsoft did better than last gen, but that's not saying much. Sony's "reveal" has been awful, and that's directly a result of Jim Ryan's leadership. Andrew House (along with Kaz) did a killer job with the PS4. Every thing from the engineering, to the reveal, to the e3 smackdown and finally to the launch was nearly perfect. This is obviously not the same team as 7 years ago.

This. Almost everyone involved on PS4 had left. It's the same as the people who've made Original Xbox & Xbox 360 had left or gotten the axe & had been replaced with corporates before Kinect had came.

Teams & leaderships always matters.

Sony got alot of crap for the PS4 reveal because they didn't show the console. That should give you an idea of how seriously you should be taking some of these criticisms.

Has the author of this article even seen any of the tech Demos Microsoft made for series x. The console reveal. Hellblade 2 trailer. The partnerships with digital foundry, popular YouTubers like Austin Evans etc. It had been anything but boring.

The problem isn't the talk itself. He did a good job for being a GDC talk. The problem was that Sony marketed it as something the general audience would care about, when in reality they should have just let Cerny do the talk without any hype. Some of the info would trickle back to Era and no one would be disappointed.
Did they? They made it clear it was a GDC talk, Cerny started his speech by saying that "there will be time later this year" to do a proper reveal and show games, that this was going to be all about system architecture and how it's going to affect developers and how these things influenced the design of the conhsole. And before it started, there was a disclaimer that it was targeted at developers.
