Most post-black-box NES games use memory mappers (additional chips on the cartridge akin to the Super FX chip on the SNES) or the Famicom Disk System to make the NES more powerful
The Famicom disk does not make the Famicom more powerful, apart from the extra audio channel. And the Famicom Disk system only added a disk controller, RAM to store the data from the disk for play, and an extra audio channel.

And bank switchers are not anywhere near the same as a freaking replacement CPU like the Super FX.

Another cool recent C64 development has been the port of LIMBO to C64. There's a short playable demo, about a year old, and it's nothing short of astonishing,:
