ok first of all calm down..

Secondly, a game tester in bloody Malmø or bloody Marsielle whos livelihood is dependent on the game they worked 4 years on succeeding should suffer because a dickhead in vienna made a stupid decision. Its not like he can do anything about it and the game they have made is nothing to do with 8chan....?
Well it’s not just that “one dickhead” did something. It’s also that their leadership locally and internationally has chosen to do nothing about it at all also. Pointing to it being a systemic issue within the organization.

Letting terrible people profit without consequence for their terrible actions to defend hypothetical people is not a valid argument

You're just saying we should never take a stand against anything because some imaginary innocent person might get involved. Grow a spine

The thing with them happened 3ish weeks ago, it has nothing to do with this whatsoever.
8chan didn't suddenly get radicalised in the last three weeks. It's always been this, and they knew that, and they still chose to work with them and link to their site. No one is saying that THQ is responsible for this tragedy, but they *did* enable and publicise the community who are responsible

You don't get to tell me to fucking calm down, let's make that perfectly clear.

Second, I already discussed the whole "poor devs" bullshit.

In sure THQ didn't know better when they did the AMA

I'm also sure they would have not done it now if they knew this was the type of people in 8chan
Their initial post phrased in in "we're doing this and we're not sure why" (as if it wasn't clear from the jump). They announced the AMA before it started and people told them what was up with 8chan, and their response was to shrug it off and mention that they had an assurance from the owner of the site that he'd clean up "the nasty stuff". They didn't immediately re-think their decision when the first post on their thread was someone posting "Heil Hitler" and they were engaging with people talking about lolis and homophobia.

They absolutely knew what was up with 8chan. They just thought they could get away with it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I didn't even know what 8chan was before the AMA

I´m sorry but its not me "not taking a stand" its me wanting to discuss games for the medium. It does not mean I will buy it. Like for example, I have to show D.W Griffith in my class. Do I like him? no he was a scumbag but the techniques he used were very influential. Do I agree with his views? Not in the slightest. Same with Michael Jackson etc in the medium they are in they produced good stuff. Are they good people not at all?

Should I stop analysis of American beauty because of Kevin Spacey in it?

What are you talking about?

This isn't about a problematic person who created art, this is about a company who knowingly worked with a website built for hate and abuse that eventually led to the murder of 49 people

im on about banning the discussion of thq future games. The games themselves. THQ corporate structure can get fucked but gagging game discussion is not the way to do it.

Thats like banning all discussion of cbs shows because lorne michaels is a creep.

Many of us are only calling for a temporary ban in protest, not a permanent one. A ban of discussion until they start taking steps to fixing this and fire everyone responsible. They have not taken a single bit of any real action since this shit show started, outside of half-hearted apologies and vague promises, and those responsible are still in their positions getting paid nicely. There are real consequences for what they did, and they need to take responsibility for it.

well, then a temporary ban I can understand if anything as a sign of respect for the victims of christchurch. I do not think a long term ban does any good though

FYI sorry for saying "calm down" I just hate seeing corporate overseers ruin it for lower tier workers.

Don't worry about it mate, sorry for snapping at you. I don't like seeing the workers suffer for shitfaced corporate heads either, but what THQ did really effects me personally.

It's not like THQ personally created CP and shared it. They fucked up by hosting an AMA on that site, they apologized. Move on, boycotting THQ wouldn't solve the CP problem, it wouldn't solve anything.

Who chat it up with a bunch of edgelords? Lol mine as well not buying anything from anyone who does an AMA on any site.
Are you posting in here:

  • Not knowing what 8chan is and how they are not like Twitter/etc
  • Not seeing the contents of the AMA, including Phillip and Reinhard's own comments?
Because that's how your post reads.

Also, telling a victim of child abuse to "move on" is fucking awful dude.

I know enough about them. I just know that the other social media sites are pretty scummy as well. Especially Reddit, bleh. But I don't see people raging about them.

I also know not to judge and boycott the whole company on the actions of a few idiots. You guys are overblowing the whole situation.
Edgelords sure is a cutesy way of describing white supremacists, child porn dealers, and more who cheered on terrorist activity in a live stream.
I'd say it fits, but fine: Assholes, scumbags, losers. There, is that better?

THQ were probably horrified by the shooting. People here are creating a caricature of hyperbolic proportions.

Okay, you compared them to Reddit. That confirms you know fucking nothing about them.

There is a difference between a huge social network which exists for many good reasons, but has bad communities and moderation which isn't strong enough to cope. And a small website which entirely exists because posting CP on 4chan would get the owner banned.

They are completely incomparable.

An asshole is a dude who cuts you off in traffic.

A Nazi would like anyone not white dead.
Someone who likes child porn would abuse children.

Quit downplaying nazis, you asshole.

There are plenty of terrible subreddits that are/were allowed to exist for the longest times. CoonTown, FatPeopleHate, WatchPeopleDie, TheDonald, ChapoTrapHouse. And those aren't small subs with maybe a few hundred people, they were/are pretty popular.

Is that dude seriously defending 8chan because "REddit is just as bad and people dont rage about that"?
It's just a meme bro /s

the end result when bad faith actors try to reduce down hate and other vile shit as just memes, they're suddenly lighthearted and fun and anyone who has a problem with it is seen as such a square. Errant nonsense, that entire argument.

Edit:
I'm not defending 8chan.
No you're just downplaying what it actually is and that's just as reprehensible in my view.

Reddit problems do indeed go deeper than just moderation taking too long, I agree.

But the fact that you think this is in any way comparable to a website which exists PURELY FOR THESE THINGS, and was literally created because the owner wanted to post things he couldn't post on 4chan at a time when 4chan had basically no rules except no CP really says a lot.

“Redditors, literal nazis, what’s the difference?”

Downplaying a website literally created for people into child pornography and people that advocate the murder of non-whites is quite a take. They’re so terrible that Google delisted them. Now use all that critical thinking you’ve got and come up with the reason that Google delisted 8chan while not delisting Reddit.

The very first reply to the AMA was “Heil Hitler.” That post remained in the thread. THQ Nordic continued the AMA. There are no excuses.

8chan is a criminal website that has been delisted by Google. It:
  • Encourages child abuse.
  • Disseminates child pornography.
  • Organizes doxxing and harassment campaigns.
  • Organizes swatting, which can and has been lethal.
  • Organizes and breeds hate campaigns, neo-nazi rhetoric.
  • Facilitated, livestreamed, and cheered on the recent white nationalist terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 49 people.
It is incomparable to even the vilest subreddit, and you're arguing from either astonishing and willful ignorance or complete bad faith (probably the latter).

Further, the person who organized the AMA on behalf of THQ Nordic, Philip Brock, is their Director of PR & Marketing, not some low level PR intern. All it takes is the most cursory of google searches to ascertain all of the above information, and we know for a fact that he knew of the site's reputation (and then lied about it in his insincere apology), because (1) he said "Mark" would "take care of the nasty stuff," and (2) was liking tweets defending their 8ch AMA before and after the apology.

Further, it wasn't just Brock, a relatively high-ranking individual, who engaged in the AMA, but Reinhard Pollice, a significant stock owner in THQ Nordic AB (the parent company of THQ Nordic GmbH) and the Director of Business & Product Development. He was palling around with people spouting homophobic slurs, saying such slurs looked like they could be in their next game.

Educate yourself before inflicting your ignorance on other people.

People rag on those platforms all the time. As for how they compare to 8chan, I don't go on Reddit much so this is a genuine question, but does Reddit have a sub-forum dedicated to depictions of toddler rape?

Why are people acting like 8chan had some reputation as a terrorist training site prior to this guy giving them a shoutout?

The place had a shitty rep, true enough and well deserved, but were their really links to terrorism? I'm all for hammering THQ on the pedophilia and alt right bullshit because those links are incontrovertible and all kinds of proof appeared in the AMA, but people acting like the place is some hive of terrorist training and always has been just isn't true...unless it was and that just wasn't a problem for literally all of us until just now, because nobody mentioned it until yesterday.

THQ didn't "support a site that had ties to terrorism" if those ties didn't appear until yesterday. It's no different than the way people from the old site aren't guilty of 'supporting child porn' because they didn't do anything about that mod nobody knew was into child porn into *boom* we all knew he was into child porn.

We have enough legit things to hammer THQ on without adding in what amount to false accusations of being involved with terrorism.

The shooter didn't just "give them a shout out." He livestreamed it for them, while they roared in approval and encouragement.

8ch is a witting breeding ground for hate groups, from GamerGate to neo-naziism. The first response to THQ Nordic's AMA was "Heil Hitler."

Here's a thought experiment: how do you think people become terrorists? Answer: they get radicalized. 8ch is a site for said hateful radicalization. It was well-known to be as such before Brock organized the AMA and massively signal boosted them — to say nothing of the various other criminal activities they engage in, which have also led to suffering and death (swatting is known to be potentially lethal).

8chan being delisted by Google for CP, hate attacks, GamerGate, racism, and so many other things that made 4chan blush

"Surely they can't be bad people! Or surely THQ Nordic had absolutely no idea about such a malicious site! Something something meet in the middle"

If you don't feel right about a potential ban on THQ Nordic because of the devs who had nothing to do with this, then this post isn't for you. It's for those who keep trying to downplay THQN's involvement with 8chan as something harmless and for us "overreacting" when there was just a massacre of 49 people by the same site that THQN did an AMA on.

Nobody is saying that? Then why are people boycotting THQ for things like "choosing to associate with terrorism apologists"? So obviously there had to be some kind of link between 8chan and terrorism prior, right?

I'm not downplaying how bad 8chan is at all, and I've said all along they should NEVER have done an AMA there and at least the PR guy needs to be fired, if not others, but people need to stop blowing things out of proportion as well.

There's zero merit in saying THQ supports terrorism because they posted on 8chan. Like I said, literally nobody said a thing about 8chan and terrorism in relation to this prior to the attack - and that indicates at least to me that there was nothing solid that linked them prior to today, so hammering THQ for a connection that didn't exist seems a bit excessive.

Like I said - hammer them for the things they did, not something that's just not an accusation that bears any weight.

I agree but I'll make one extra point.

8chan isn't for radicalization. PDP, 4chan, the hateful subs mentioned in this thread, etc are where people slowly get radicalized. I include PDP only because he acts as an entry point for people (and the shooter knew it).

8chan is where you go when you are basically 90% of the way there already. Anyone who isn't radicalized would see the shit posted there and back the fuck up. 8chan is for sharing things between already radicalized people, at which point you are only 1 step away from things like this happening.
