For what it's worth, there was a point where Reddit's most popular draw was /r/jailbait and the site took full advantage of it. They don't have it around now though; Reddit tends to like totally free speech until it becomes a legal liability.
There's 0 chance they didn't know what they were getting into. They even made a tweet that somebody would be removing the 'nasty stuff'.
