I'd like to remind you all that THQ before being bought by Nordic Games released 10,000 balloons near San Francisco during GDC to promote Homefront. Naturally, most of these fell into San Francisco Bay angering a lot of people.

Dumb as fuck publicity stunts ain't nothing new to them.

You realize that THQ and Nordic have nothing to do with each other right?

I legit did a double take when I saw the title of this thread and thought I was actually going blind for a hot second. I mean...what the actual fuck was going through these peoples heads when they approved this? Coupled with this fact...

It wasn't one dude. I keep posting this because I don't want it to be swept under the rug by people who think it was just some PR guy.

It had the backing and active engagement of at least 3 people, including their head of PR and marketing (Phillipp Brock), and one of their board members (Reinhard Pollice). Reinhard Pollice being literally one of the most powerful people at the company. http://www.thqnordic-investors.com/en/board-and-management/

All I have to say to THQ Nordic is...

There is no way this is accidental but I can't understand what they could possibly gain from it other than a few hours of trending due to being associated with a site delisted from google for child porn. Like there is no way to spin this positively. And it's not like they stood their ground and tried to appeal to the sickos with some "uhh free specch" tactic because they apologised after. Like the whole thing is baffling to think about. Why forgo reddit for something like this.

Well, yeah? That's a given. This is a new low though, I'm genuinely impressed by this.

Like serious repercussions need to be delivered for this massive PR fuckup.
Honestly I could see there being lawsuits against those involved. The damage done by this stunt is going to haunt the company and frankly anyone involved in the departments that would have had a say in it for years.

Fucking unreal.

Dear videogame industry:
could we go one week without you finding new ways to completely shit yourself? One week. That's all I'm asking for.

Ok, so what's the best case scenario here for THQ, if we give them every benefit of the doubt?

Someone from 8 chan emailed them and said "Hey, we run an internet forum, would you like to do an AMA?"
Then the THQ PR man asks some questions and all the answers seem legit (but doesn't do any sort of independent research).
8 chan assures THQ that they'll moderate the forum and keep the trolls away, just like any other forum.

So THQ PR folks walk into an ambush, ignoring all warnings that they shouldn't be associating with that site when they announced it on Twitter.
They get to the website, don't think to look around and see the grotesque amount of hate filled content they'll be associating with.
Start the AMA and get shown a bunch of despicable images and questions.
Give all the wrong replies as they don't realise the kind of situation they're in. Then they panic and go into damage control mode.

That's a ridiculous amount of incompetence.

I know I'm repeating myself but, here we go: It actually wasn't just a PR guy. It was the leader of the marketing team along with a member of THQ Nordic's 7-member Board & Management. The higher-ups who you think wouldn't sign off on it didn't only sign off on it, they participated themselves AND dropped this little gem:
Yeah, I saw that, but I'm grasping at straws here. Just boggles my mind.

Can you imagine a big film studio doing an AMA for a nazi website? This is surreal in it's idiocy. Some of these people are being paid a lot of money for doing shit like this...

Like....it blows my mind.

I honestly don't know what THQ can do to come back from this short of a complete clean out at the top.

I feel so sorry for the devs stuck with them right now.

Dear videogame industry:
how does one even trip over their own asshole? you'd think that's an impossibility, for ones foot to get tripped up over ones own asshole, and yet it continues to happen day after day. is this some sort of meta-marketing for asshole-repellent sneakers?
get back to me on that,

It's amazing that they Shadowdropped a bunch of games like a new Darksiders and it ended up quickly forgotten. Quick Karma

The tweet about the AMA was framing it in a "look how crazy and edgy we are for doing this" way. This wasn't someone at THQ being tricked by 8chan, they knew what the place was and promoted the AMA as a wild stunt

Good summary, but I heavily doubt that this was a calculated move the higher-ups signed off on, but rather a stupid, spontaneous decision after hours by the individuals involved for whatever unfathomable reason. I'm 100% confident that THQ Nordic as a company doesn't align with anything that site promotes or tolerates and that we'll hear an elaborate statement/apology (most likely including consequences) shortly after the new workday has begun over here in Europe. At least that's what I hope personally.

"Maybe if we align with the vile shit that populates this media, they will buy our games" is probably the strategy here. Moreso if one of the high ups is actually a poster from that site.

I'm a cynical fuck, so here goes.

As soon as their next game comes out, a few people will post saying they will be boycotting it due to this. Those people will be the minority here and almost non-existent elsewhere. Other posters will then flood the thread with "SEPARATE ART FROM THE ARTIST!", "BOYCOTTS HURT DEVS!" and other similar things.

THQ end up doing just fine, because most gamers couldn't give a shit and/or have weak morals.

Dunno man. A story about this made it's way to the IGN homepage. IGN is one of the most visited sites in the US, so this is hitting a lot of people.

That post was pointing out that even if you somehow give them every benefit of the doubt, that they still come out looking horrible.

Like at some point there are limitations to how little a vast European games company can know about places on the internet that are not predominately situated in Europe. Like announcing the AMA before it happened. That's maybe them not knowing. When they are actively in there and they see just what they're dealing with and they keep going?

Can't use the foreign cultural ignorance excuse on that one.

Yeah, that's how I see it as well. Consequences will end up being minimal in the long run.

Edit: This was NOT incompetence if you read through the read it's pretty obvious they knew what they were getting themselves in to. One of the seven board members was actively participating. This was VERY much intentional. To what end remains to be seen but I wouldn't put it past any company from trying to make money off of gamer outrage just look at the lack of responses to gamergate. It's really pretty pathetic

I would be genuinly suprised if anyone thought otherwise. Your average gamer isn't hanging around in forums.

THQ Nordic AB should just close THQ Nordic GmbH down and transfer all the properties to another subsidiary (maybe open a new one). This is just fucked beyond belief and those people should not continue working in the industry, simple as that

Holdings in the Company: As of the date of the Prospectus, Reinhard Pollice holds, through companies, 115,681 class A shares and 655,524 class B shares in THQ Nordic AB (publ).

This is one of the people involved with this.

Nothing cynical at all, this is exactly how it's gonna end. Hell, by the next two days no one is gonna be talking about this and that hellhole of a website is gonna still be there like nothing.
