I really hope the games media isn't already done pursuing this story, but the lack of energy is already becoming apparent. As long as THQN doesn't tweet anything today, they will probably get off the hook successfully and everyone will move on, which is just disgusting to me.

It is to be expected. Gaming medias are pretty lenient with big publishers that hands them games for free, invite them to trips and hotels.

I refuse to believe this was intentional... I mean... you just don't do that. Even if his personal beliefs are inline with that site, even if the company itself caters to that audience, they are a mass market company that makes gaming products for a mass market audience (including industry players who would not want to be associated with this kind of thing, ever).

If I was this guy I would be considering how to exit as gracefully as possible, cause that kind of fuckup is beyond repair I think.

Normal people: "I refuse to believe this was intentional"
Alt right and pedophiles: *cheers*

This is why companies do this shit to begin with, and also why they get away with it. Let's not forget "too extreme to be taken seriously at first" is also the core tactic in the alt-right recruitment manual, either. Don't fall for this shit. Don't give them the benefit of the doubt when they've done nothing to earn it.

In this case, they have more than enthusiast press to deal with, this story has ended up in high profile mainstream publications such as Newsweek, Variety, Huffington Post and Yahoo Finance. which is arguably much more damaging to the company.

I hope at least Patrick and Jason won't stop pursuing this story.
THQ shouldn't be allowed to sweep all of this under the rug.

8Chan is literally the refuge for people who are too extreme even for 4chan, wtf?!

4chan would've been enough for that anti-sjw bullshit.

Nobody in their right mind would actively try to appeal to paedos. Racists, nazis, republicans? Sure, but not child-porn fanboys.

That's the only thing that stops me from believing that this was intended.

They even could've started the AMA on reddits "thedonald" sub and appologise afterwards for fucking up. "Sorry we tried to go to the videogame sub."

How far gone must one be to think this would work in their favour? You can't do a simple "sorry guys, we didn't mean to." after condoning and even linking to a site were paedophilia is posted. Uttely insane on their part if true.
I agree with you. I wouldn't be surprised if they thought 8chan only as an offshoot of 4chan, not the refuge for the extreme fringe (or perhaps even core?) of it.

Yeah it's infuriating. I'm sure some the sites will try to keep on top of the situation, but I suspect the majority have already stopped caring and did so once the "apology" was posted.

Have you seen their line-up and the ips they're owning?

Most will never know about hits whole fiasco in the first place and as soon as the games are releasing almost nobody outside of a few pockets of the internet(resetera, etc.) will care.

The more time goes on more and more people will forget/don't care enough to not play the next Saint's Row, Darksiders, Time Splitters, etc.

Absolutely .. they primArily work with or acquire devs and that is going to be difficult for them going forward which is where it's going to hurt them not stocks even though I am guessing the execs are happy with stocks going up and will probably be hoping all of this washes over in a few months time .. I mean look at Warhorse, after all of that controversy their game sold really well and they got bought ...
warhorse controversy was nowhere near as bad tho.

It's really upsetting that most of the energy about questioning journalism is spent whining about Anthem getting a 7/10 when it's so obviously objectively a 6.5 and not, like, this actual shitstorm.

The people with the power to hold these companies accountable don't care to harm their relationships with them. And that doesn't manifest in review scores that make you angry, it manifests in the rather subtle way games journalism reacts to stuff like this.

Vavra was basically forced to keep his mouth shut for the last year of development (in regards to gamergate). I'm sure that helped.

Even tho some websites refused to cover its release, the general public either doesn't care or forgets very easily. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the case with THQ nordic.

I mean its only been a few hours and their stocks are back up again.

Patrick Klepek showed them all how it's done yesterday, and now they're all tripping over themselves to normalize this extraordinary fuck up.

THQ Nordic Held Q&A on a Website Banned for Suspected Child Pornography
The company has since apologized, saying the move was done without "proper due diligence to understand the history and the controversy of the site." That's bullshit

To be fair to the media, I think it is hard to really pursue the story since we have all of the facts. We know who did the AMA, we know when, and all of it is pretty cut and dry. You can't really follow up your article with more if there isn't more to say.

New member here. Been a reader of this site since the beginning, so good to finally be a part of the site.

Like 20 or so minutes after they announced the AMA, i decide to contact Lars Wingefors (He have his contact mail public at his site). And after a while he replied, which i atleast found nice of him to do, he said they had commented on it on twitter.

However, i also replied to him stateing that the AMA link is still up on their twitter, so their "sorry" did not mean anything. Also linked to some of the examples of what was going on, and links to the thread here.

I thought it was nice of him to reply, BUT i really hope he steps in, and will do something about this. Like for sure remove the AMA link... And also maaay want to look for other PR people. I guess time will tell, what/if any he decides to do.

AsPowerBar_2019-02-26_21-17-05-1.png

I know this is so extremely not interesting at all but I'm like 50m from where Lars is sitting in my old hometown here in Sweden. So...yeah...

Yeah, I was really happy to see how much Patrick went for accuracy. He just laid it allll out.

Given how early that article went up, I was kinda hoping it would set the tone for coverage. But reading e.g. Gamespot and Kotaku's articles on THQN.... guess not--it's a real bummer how much they're softballing this.

Is this guy an alt-right pedophile? Does he support them? Take this incident out and investigate what is he about. I'm not defending him nor THQ, I'm genuinely curious. To me this is still a completely baffling occurrence. It's really bad for the guy that did it, it's really bad for the company he represents. I'm not even sure who has it worse to be honest.

The notion of some PR guy thinking that 8Chan is 4Chan x2 is almost equally baffling, but I'm inherently more of a believer in people's incompetence than I am in their malevolence.

Just asking questions right?
It's not like there is a summary in the OP, right? Oh

Of course there is more to report. You ask why their Director of Business Development and Director of Marketing engage in convesations about topics including "SJWs", "Lolis", anti-LGBT discussions, etc... And you pipe that shit into CNN, MSNBC, etc...

There is plenty to report but gaming media doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds them (in general, for example Kotaku has been doing pretty well).

Their upper management directly engaged in posting all kinds of crap during the AMA. Topics including SJWs and lolis among others. No, there is no excuse of not knowing. Also, read the OP people.

To be fair, Rock Paper Shotgun are shooting straight too:
THQ Nordic held a Q&A with 8chan, a website de-listed from Google for hosting suspected child porn
Graham Smith
Editor-in-chief
26th February 2019 / 11:11PM

"We're doing an 8chan AMA and we have no idea why," announced THQ Nordic on their Twitter account earlier this evening. If you're not aware, 8chan is an imageboard website which has been de-listed from Google search results for hosting "suspected child abuse content," and which is associated with Swatting and Gamergate.

THQ Nordic's marketing director has since apologised and claimed ignorance, but both are hard to believe.

Most people don't even know this happened. Even less will remember / care about it in a few weeks/months and then E3 is happening and out of 1.000 journalists 2 will try to ask them about this stuff. They'll get their pr-answer and nothing will come from it.

As others have said. They won. They gave the fascists/nazis/paedos/etc. a signal (as Trump did before) and now they can let it die down in peace. Knowing that most will still buy their games and that the alt-reich is sending goons into every thread were THQ is criticised for this.

I'm still half-convinced yesterday was some outlandish fever dream. THQ Nordic's apathetic response isn't helping matters -- like some of you, I've got a sinking feeling this'll be swept under.

It's more than just one guy. There are higher ups involved in the AMA, and the CEO downplayed the whole thing in an interview.

Thanks to it they suddenly have millions of loyal GG/alt right supporters. We should never forget what they did.

Makes me wonder which will be the next game publisher to appeal to those idiots.

Kotaku and Gamespot should be ashamed of their coverage which reads more like they want to report the thing but without the getting blacklisted part. Shameful.

If this gets swept under the rug with no serious repercussions I'm going to lose my mind. How can big companies be okay with being associated with cp and nazism via proxy?

There is more energy and anger being put in to Anthem being a mediocre game than this? What the fuck?

Yep in the era of trump you can basically do whatever the fuck you want and as long as you don't linger on it no one ever has to suffer any consequences....well unless you are a woman in the industry

Games journalism is even more pathetic than the rest of the media with access journalism so it's not a shock

I havent even checked but do they still have that fucking link up?

Of course the CEO would downplay it - it's a PR disaster for them. There is no scenario in my head where this is beneficial to any individual in the company - it doesn't matter what they believe in. How big is 8Chan really?

I'm seriously impressed on how much time has passed and no repercussion from THQ's upper managament has happened. No solid defense, no sincere apologies, no firings, nothing. What a mess.

There is literally nothing they can say at this point who will make things better. Every single word coming out of the mouth has the words "pedo", "nazi" etc next to it. People here mention this as it is some kind of win for THQ but the reality is the company has fucked itself big time.

It's probable that the PR will (be forced to) quit in the near future, unless he is well connected inside the company.

If I was THQ and I had this disaster in my hands I would keep my mouth shut for as long as possible while I organised some company-wide change to accommodate this disaster.

This doesn't stop at 8chan. By doing this they have shown that they want you as a fan no matter how vile you are. I'm sure they will be getting many new fans because of this. A few hundred people might stop buying their games, but I'm sure there are potentially thousands of gg scumbags in line.

The five games were minor titles released on Steam. They might miss out on publishing a few more AA titles. THQN will be perfectly fine without that considering the vast amount of games they already have in development.
There have been rumours that Microsoft were planning to extend this partnership to their rumoured Switch releases. It's a partnership that could be very profitable going forward.

Explain to me why they would not care? Why would having voluntarily for no particular benefit engaging in activities that could jeopardise future business relations with a major industry player be of no concern for management?
