I'm seriously impressed on how much time has passed and no repercussion from THQ's upper managament has happened. No solid defense, no sincere apologies, no firings, nothing. What a mess.
This is turning out to be be a genius move by them. They get their internet troll army and consumer loyalty from a little targeted demographic for basically no cost at all. Nearly everyone on my gaming twitter list hasn't said a word about this. Just tweeting up a storm about the cohen stuff.

There's just always been something shady about THQ Nordic to me. Using the THQ name, snapping up devs every week. Where's the money coming from?

There have been rumours that Microsoft were planning to extend this partnership to their rumoured Switch releases. It's a partnership that could be very profitable going forward.

Explain to me why they would not care? Why would having voluntarily for no particular benefit engaging in activities that could jeopardise future business relations with a major industry player be of no concern for management?
If it indeed included Switch games, then it would be way more lucrative than a few Steam games. Had it only been AA games moving from Windows Store to Steam, then it wouldn't matter much.

Either way, MS hasn't said anything yet, and I doubt they will. THQN will be perfectly fine, and I'm sure they've gained many new fans.

This doesn't stop at 8chan. By doing this they have shown that they want you as a fan no matter how vile you are. I'm sure they will be getting many new fans because of this. A few hundred people might stop buying their games, but I'm sure there are potentially thousands of gg scumbags in line.
None of that offsets the fact that when you google the name of the company there are tons of results with the word CP

Is this guy an alt-right pedophile?

Did I say he was?

Does he support them? Take this incident out and investigate what is he about. I'm not defending him nor THQ, I'm genuinely curious. To me this is still a completely baffling occurrence. It's really bad for the guy that did it, it's really bad for the company he represents. I'm not even sure who has it worse to be honest.

The notion of some PR guy thinking that 8Chan is 4Chan x2 is almost equally baffling, but I'm inherently more of a believer in people's incompetence than I am in their malevolence.

All the questions you're asking, including the fact it's not just "some PR guy", are right there in the OP for you to read. What the fuck is the use of being "genuinely curious" if you won't bother spending the two minutes of your life that will take to sate that curiosity?

Wonder if this was some sort of 4D chess move after all. Would be crazy.

Will be interesting to see how much actual power the games journalism media and forums like this actually have if the company doesn't budge on this. Will there be any repercussions at all?

A Microsoft represented has in fact commented on it.

Yeah, I know about that. Doesn't mean much yet. The link has been taken down as well.

I'm just a very cynical person. I don't believe MS will do anything about it. If we see MS games appearing on Switch without the THQ logo on it, then yeah, we can talk about how this potentially actually affected them.

Did I ask you to say if he was? No, not all my questions were answered. Ease up with the aggressive language cat-dude, you can be more polite towards the people you discuss with.

No, it's a stupid move regardless. The pure shitlord crowd is loud but actually a tiny minority, you're going to turn off more customers than you gain overall.

It was malevolence:

Get the hell out with the tone policing, sealioning and "just asking questions". Every question and wrong assumption in your post is answered by the OP, and the only thing you're demonstrating with your every subsequent post is how little you actually care about the issue or the known facts.

Origin Access (EA's subscription service) has THQ Nordic games included in it. In the spirit of not condoning their activities, I've cancelled my sub and let EA know why.
Great! I don't subscribe to EA Origin Access, but I would cancel that in a heartbeat if I did.

Also, a reminder that you can choose to ignore content from THQ Nordic on Steam. If you go to their publisher page, you can see a small cog wheel. There you can choose to ignore content from this publisher.

I will repeat my point which I believe is quite important: if you are disgusted by the alt-right and/or pedophilia, you cannot let this stand. You cannot justify this as "some random PR dude's fuckup". This was a calculated move by higher ups at the company, a move that has endeared their games to an actual audience that exists. If decent people don't stop buying their games, then this move is a net positive for them and we will see more of them in the future.

jschreier Are you writing a piece on this yourself? Kotaku's existing coverage is extremely inadequate (putting it kindly — the article's title doesn't even name the company involved, let alone describe the forum), and with all the information exhaustively listed in this thread's threadmarks alone, one could construct a more rigorous and damning indictment.

This situation needs so much more media attention than it's getting. Companies like Microsoft need to sever ties if there are no meaningful consequences laid out by the CEO of THQN (and it doesn't look like there will be, what with one of the involved being a high-ranking board member).

In any other industry, openly — gleefully — courting with and promoting a delisted forum of pedophillic hatemongers who engage in illegal activities such as doxxing would be a death sentence.

Don't make it so easy for them to defend themselves.

PR-Spin:

1. He obviosly meant the knight as one upcoming game form THQ is set in medieval times.
2. He knew that some users might throw stuff like that around. As with the loli comment he simply tried to disarm the situation with a fact (own game coming up) and a fun jab at the user who posted the loli-pic (we don't have something like that, you do)
3. The same could've happened on reddit. Look at these racist/homophobic/creepy subs.
4. Those views obviosly don't represent the values and morals of us as a company.

They wrote this shit the way they did because they could always spin it around. The alt-reich understands but they still can sell it as an honest mistake/trying to make the best of it in such a nice forum.

Not America
People are focusing on the child porn thing because it's super bad. But yeah the whole site is filled with literal neo-nazis and pretty explicit racism.

See this is a great problem because:

Patrick Klepek showed them all how it's done yesterday, and now they're all tripping over themselves to normalize this extraordinary fuck up.

THQ Nordic Held Q&A on a Website Banned for Suspected Child Pornography
The company has since apologized, saying the move was done without "proper due diligence to understand the history and the controversy of the site." That's bullshit

To be fair, Rock Paper Shotgun are shooting straight too:

THQ Nordic held a Q&A with 8chan, a website de-listed from Google for hosting suspected child porn
Graham Smith

"We're doing an 8chan AMA and we have no idea why," announced THQ Nordic on their Twitter account earlier this evening. If you're not aware, 8chan is an imageboard website which has been de-listed from Google search results for hosting "suspected child abuse content," and which is associated with Swatting and Gamergate.

THQ Nordic's marketing director has since apologised and claimed ignorance, but both are hard to believe.

See the above examples deal with what is "suspected" BECAUSE it is ILLEGAL. However, it IS KNOWN through MYRIAD examples courtesy of that thread alone that the place is cesspit of BIGOTRY. When did it become to acceptable turn a blind eye to this to attract attention just because it is not considered "illegal" online at this point in time?

Below are the two examples which have gotten the reporting right, right off the bat (perhaps also add "also suspected of sharing CP"):

I hope at least Patrick and Jason won't stop pursuing this story.
THQ shouldn't be allowed to sweep all of this under the rug.

What is just as disconcerting, looking at that GS article is that it seems like the reporting is being done based on rudimentary information. Nowhere in that article are THQN's participation in acknowledgement of board's fuckery (like their direct responses to "Cease your faggotry" and "SocJus" and "lolitiddies") are mentioned. Removing that fact from the reporting goes a long way toward absolving these people of accountability.

Anyway, the story is not yet over and I hope more reporting is done with spine.

Yeah, that's a good recommendation. Though, I, uh, actually did that a while ago, when the bought Warhorse (the Kingdom Come devs) Makes it impossible to mistakenly look at their products.

I dunno that Valve cares at all how you use it, but as an organisational tool it's very handy.

Yeah, his attitude is spoiling the thread not your pointless questions that are answered in the threadmarks and the OP.

Indeed; when all else fails, criticise tone, even if your own tone is 5x more condescending and insulting (because "the other guy did it first", right?). :)

But hey, at least he sure showed me with that witty and tone-appropriate "someone raped your cat" quip!

Again, this is the worst thing about it; it's a net positive. The only way to prevent it from being so is if the people who won't stand for this shit make a huge stink about it.

To be fair the zoophilia is on brand with 8chan.

And so is tone policing with the alt-right!

jschreier Your comments on Twitter are good, but Kotaku's coverage of this is currently pretty bad.

It does not:

- Name THQ in the headline.
- Mention the involvement of Rienhard, a higher up at the company. Or the more mysterious Fabian.
- Mention the worst replies, like Rienhard joking about homophobia himself
- Mention that the official THQ Nordic twitter account had the link directly to the cesspit for over 15 hours, far beyond the apology.

The article also heavily plays up the apology, which we know to be BS because they were actively taking part in it. They knew what they were doing. Don't let them get away with feigning ignorance.

Media outlets have a responsibility to report things like this and it would be nice to see Kotaku do better.

It is just burying your head in the sand to believe incompetence is more likely than malevolence when situations make no logical sense to just be a mistake.

No one holds an AMA on 8chan without knowing what it is. Like . . . Come on dude.

What's really boring about these incidents is that they always follow the same pattern: company supports racist groups online, people complain about it, company says "oops, it was an accident" and some people actually believe it was an accident.

Well, I'm not buying Darksiders on Switch anymore.

This is why we need sites like Waypoint. Sites that actually take this stuff seriously and aren't just fluff pieces disguised as news. It's also why whenever someone talks about how they don't like Waypoint it makes me instantly suspicious of their intention.
