I wonder what goes through the mind of marketers that make such idiotic decisions. How did this even get greenlit? Were they completely oblivious to 8chan's history? That seems unlikely, otherwise they'd be unaware of 8chan's existence to begin with. It's not exactly a mainstream site.

As THQ Nordic are based in Austria, an Austrian newspaper covered this now too: https://derstandard.at/200009866305...agestunde-auf-beruechtigter-Seite-und-es-geht

The article is obviously in German, and the only new news is a statement they got from Philipp Brock, quoted indirectly:

"Speaking to the Standard [the newspaper in question], the head of marketing of the Vienna branch [of THQ Nordic] said that during the 'AMA', there definitely had been moderation taking place and the worst postings had been deleted. The screenshots containing problematic material thus would not reflect the actual course of what happened, because the person contacting the company actually did moderate the AMA."

I'm not quite sure which postings he's talking about, because some of them they actually answered to weren't all that nice either.
Downplaying is really one of the worst strategies they could have choosen. Shows they are not ready to take any serious action.

I mean they can try to walk back being on 8chan all they want, their head of PR still publicly announced that the company hates SJWs and loves big ol' anime tiddies

Honest question, who's Coffee Stain and who is this @SatisfactoryAF ?
Coffee Stain are the developers of Sanctum, Sanctum 2, Goat Simulator, and the upcoming Satisfactory

Was he expecting some gotcha answer? What a dumb tweet.
No I just think that getting anyone associated with THQ to state this on the record is a good thing, at least whilst they still have the individuals responsible working in their marketing department.

Edit: and I got the exact response I expected.

It's pretty much explained in that image.

They are a developer and publisher (Satisfactory is their game) and they are a subsidiary of the same parent company that owns THQ Nordic.

Edit:

Ohh that is you on twitter, why are you trying to play good guy detective after deleting all your tweets, trying framing random people named Mark as pedophiles?
How is your twitter still up?

I dont think they intended to normalize pedophilia or child abuse though imo.

The way they carried themselves in the 8Chan thread really made it seem like they knew who they were engaging with.

This was poorly conceived edgelord bullshit which needs to have repercussions.

Dismissing this as "poor edgelord bullshit" is irresponsible as fuck, this is a site that is known for harbouring white supremacists and paedophiles.

Do all the studios under them deserve to get affected ? Game devs are already having a hard time holding on to their jobs.

Do you propose that we just swipe hurtful actions like this under the rug? The people that engaged with the 8Chan crowd represents the entire company including the studios tied to them.

Also what game are lead developer on?

That's an interesting interpretation.

First you should probably look up what the word "plausible" means.

Also I think the Mark you are referring to did in fact share the link to 8chan on his twitter.

He has stated it wasn't him, so I deleted my tweet saying it was plausible that it could have been him.

I think it's kinda obvious that they don't support it if they are trying to explain who their publisher is and which THQ they are working for.

What's up with people giving the PR the benifit of the doubt?

If they didn't know about 8chan, how did they end up doing an AMA over there instead of something like Reddit?

If they didn't know why didn't they do something as basic as a Google search to find out what the site was?

If they aren't supporting them, how come they pander to them by talking about the scary "SJWs", going in woth the lolli "big boobs" image and reply to the "cease your *****" image by saying it could be an image of one of their upcoming games?

They hella knew what they were doing and who they were reaching out to.

The question "How do you feel about white supremacy" is such a softball that you might as well be throwing a pillow. How would you even make a gotcha out of that?

So he says the horrible stuff they directly replied to (like the loli pic or the homophobic meme) isn't problematic?

Seen it too. Fuck those projecting Peado scumbags. We have multiple threads running at this very moment about how great it is companies are taking zero tolerance policies on child porn.

My lord. What are people doing. This is so incompetent by the people responsible at Nordic, that it just can´t be a mistake. They have to be in on it or something. Like, how do you, as a tech-savy employee at a games company, set up an AMA in a forum like that without checking what the place is in the first place? Well okay, now you do the AMA and just convieniently ignore all the vile posts or downright play a long with them and happily respond instead of condemning anything. When shit blow up you then post a non-apology and say: "Gee wizz, we didn´t know anything. Ooopsie". What a fucking dumpster fire.

The most important question is:

(gaining sales by stimulating alt right) - (losing sales by outraging "SJWs") = + or - ?
So this is like, a legitimate thing to wonder, and I highly recommend anyone go watch H.Bombs recent video on the topic, but in this particular case there's no way this pays off.

Stimulating the alt right would be doing stuff like posting about how your game is "outrageous", like how you've got sexualised women and crude humour and no one can stop you, or making fun of "outrage culture" or something of that calibur.

It works because those who speak out against it would be a vocal minority that are basically just advertising your product to everyone who doesn't care enough to not purchase.

But in this case, they've been linked to child porn. That is way too far. They've got the alt right crowd, but at the cost at everything else, and the alt right crowd pales in size comparison to everything else.

This move was probably an attempt to turn controversy into advertising, but they could not have botched it more.

Why isn't someone higher on the totem-pole putting their foot down?

Doing nothing must be worse than trying to ignore it and hoping it'll go away by itself. They must have lawyers and at least some normal pr people with a bit of a brain left.

How hard can it be to make a pr-statement, fire the people responsible, appologise, take a stance against cp and make a somewhat huge donation to a anti-cp charity?

Many gamers have no morals outside of "triggering the left". The fact that they're fine with promoting child porn to piss off Resetera is abhorrent but unsurprising.

I'm pretty sure they have meetings at the moment but firing people is not always that easy. I totally expect an official statement today though.

This isn't the US. Firing someone in Austria isn't a spur of the moment affair. Especially when those you'd want to fire own stock in the company.

Gotta wonder if Lars and the board of THQN AB will clean out the mess that THQ Gmbh did. First response from Lars was underwhelming but also not unexpected. We should probably get something on it later today.

I cant imagine them just letting it pass by.

One of the guys is very high up and owns the 2nd most stock in the company, iirc. I imagine that may take awhile.

Great, when I was excited for a possible TimeSplitters 4 they fuck it up again by doing an AMA that was completely unnecessary.
