I initially thought, like everyone else here, that going on 8chan was an incredibly stupid idea, but after seeing how this has gone down from media, gamers, and this site even, I don't really think so anymore.

This whole thing will have resulted in a net positive for THQ Nordic and all it took was some crocodile tears and some quick deletes of tweets. Nobody is going to see any punishment or repercussions of any sort from all this. It's a pretty sad state of affairs.

The cynic in me is wondering if PR is actually going to start looking at these tactics as a legitimate way to get huge attention for their product with little to no downside.
Oh they're they're already doing it. This isn't a new tactic at all. I initially assumed the media wouldn't let them get away with going this far but hey looks like they are and THQ just got a lot of people talking about their brand.

If you (or anyone else that hasn't seen it) are interested this video's been posted a few times and should be required watching on the topic.

Can we not do this.

It's okay to think the response is soft (I might even agree with that), but come on.

Their response is always soft though.

Everyone gets a free pass. Bans are often only a day or week long. Users will get a "warning" for using slurs like "retarded" because mods view it as "a learning opportunity".

Ever wonder why so few women are on this site? The only issue this site is particularly progressive on is combating racism. Everything else gets the expected treatment. Very centrist. Obviously, it's far better than practically any other gaming-related forum, but it could be much better and people have a right to complain.

Here you go. You'll also want to boycott anything made by Sega.

You're going to have a pretty slow year of gaming. Deep Silver publishes all Sega games in Europe. It seems Sega is now guilty by association.

Wish you'd cut it out with this straw man derailment. Virtually no one has mentioned boycotting separate subsidiaries of the parent holding company THQ Nordic AB, or their affiliates.

People are talking about boycotting the subsidiary responsible for the AMA, THQ Nordic GmbH, until they take action against those responsible and take the matter seriously.

Disappointed that pin ball effect for this news don't seem to happening in mainstream. The timing was bad with all the Trump summit and Cohen testimony hogging all the space.

As someone else has stated above in this thread, the majority of people will chalk this up to a mistake and continue buying their games, while the alt right and gg crowd (which is not a small portion of the gaming community) will now go out of their way to support games by thq nordic.

No publicity is bad publicity. There have undoubtedly been many people who have now searched thq nordic and now know what games they publish and will be publishing. That kind of publicity is valuable.
Tbh I only knew them(recently) for Dark siders which seems like a dead franchise after the last release. I guess I too should Google them since I have no idea what else they even have planned. They're a far cry from a company who's logo I used to see on a variety of game boxes.

But I can see that since they affiliated themselves with the scum of the internet, those pieces of shit would now go out of their way to support them.

Nah that wasn't the main issue. This debacle was hot enough to become the top 10 trenders on twitter and it started early in the day that preceded the Cohen summit. These agencies would have staff that at least glances at it to determine if it is worth scrutinizing further.

You're probably the best person to ask this to, so ultimately, who are the people to blame for this debacle? And are they people that can simply be fired or are they too important to the company to let go?
I don't know any more than other frequent posters in this thread, so I can't say things like who originally had the idea with any kind of guarantee.

However, we did have Imran in here saying it was a planned decision approved by an entire department. He was also the first person to confirm it was real and not a hack, so I trust that. I find it amazing it went around the department with nobody objecting to it. Phillip is probably the one most directly responsible in the sense that he seems to have been the one who set it up, though.

Phillip, Fabian and Reinhard all definitely knew what 8chan was going in, and were the main people involved. Phillip is the head of PR and marketing, and holds a decent position in the company but definitely not one where they would struggle to fire him, but Reinhard could be difficult. He is one of the most powerful people in the company.

Fabian is more interesting. I believe I know who he is (but don't want to raise too much attention to it on the off chance I have the wrong person), and he isn't the kind of person they would struggle to get rid of. He also seems to be the most likely one to stay on, since nobody is really talking about him.

Thank you for clearing some of this up. There's a lot of details all over the place and I wanted to get the names straight to know who's who.

Why are you so concerned with finding gotchas and testing people's resolve? If THQ Nordic actually takes appropriate action, there would not be any reason to boycott or disclaim their games at all.

Agreed. You know there's a fairly obvious gotcha about harm vs. inconvenience I'd like to use there as a retort, but it would probably be the sort of thing that would get me banned.

Maybe I should do it anyway. I'd wind up more productive in the long run I bet.

Why would THQ even advertise to 8ch? They're not buying those games, they only like early access.

This is worse than I thought
Yup. They were created by people who were mad about 4chan finally banning child porn (real life child porn, not the anime shit). I think they eventually kicked out those guys too (who probably just keep going around starting chans), but still promote things like the anime child and toddler rape porn. And Neo-Nazis along with other disgusting stuff.

Pretty good article by GameRevolution on the situation:

https://www.gamerevolution.com/features/502569-thq-nordic-8chan-ama-toxicity-gaming-industry

Some snippets:

Now, the actions of THQ Nordic's PR director aren't completely reflective of the gaming industry on the whole. Though we've seen many attempts at "edginess" from marketing companies in the past, a company willfully lumping itself in with a site banned by Google for suspected pedophilia is a completely different ballgame. But its enthusiasm for jumping in with this crowd is noteworthy, as it shines a spotlight on just how ambivalent the industry is towards the overwhelming amount of bigotry that exists among its consumer base.

This quiet complicity with the vitriol that surrounds video games is exemplified by THQ Nordic's bizarre PR move. This is a big publisher, one which owns the rights to Timesplitters, Darksiders, de Blob, and more, hopping into an image board filled with bigots in a desperate attempt to promote its brand. THQ Nordic seemingly didn't care if its audience was filled with racists, so long as they were potential customers.

This is what causes the industry-wide silence; the fear of the targeted hate directed at developers, journalists, Twitch streamers, and gamers harming a company's bottom line. Individuals can be thrown under the bus repeatedly, but so long as those bigots keep buying the games, they're just as good as any other customer. This bigotry and harassment may be awful for those being forced to deal with it, but as long as those folks keep putting money into video games, then the industry will keep turning a blind eye.

Though the company's PR and Marketing Director claimed the AMA was the result of him not doing his "proper due diligence" and that it wasn't "about being edgy," when game companies have done little but placate the online mob for so long, why wouldn't a PR lead eventually try to directly serve that mob?

At every games industry event, industry heads across various publishers explain how they do what they do for the gaming community. Gamers, we're told, are second-to-none in terms of their passion and dedication. But as harassment, toxicity, and bigotry continue to be a major problem, it's unclear which gamers these companies are really targeting; those who enjoy the hobby and encourage its continued inclusivity, or those who would harass one of their developers out of their company if they tweeted about feminism.

You went on 4chan AS a kid, people go on 8chan FOR the kids. If the internet is a hill and content is the shit rolling down it then 8chan is the very bottom of the hill.
Oh lawd. You actually made me laugh out loud with that line.

But the sad part is, it's true. 8chan is worse than 4chan and 4chan is already edgy enough. 8chan has white nationalism, pedo content of all kinds, gore related content including animal abuse, and also ISIS recruitment drives. So yeah, pretty fucking bad.

I still don't understand the why. Why would anyone do this, much less a company. Why would you taint your image and brand like that.

Yup, people definitely need to watch the video. And it's exactly why a ban on at least OTs here was called for (at the very least, until THQ actually did something to show that they were going to rectify what they did). OTs are essentially free advertisements for new games (I mean it's very common for people from game companies or game company accounts to link to them on their social media accounts).

By not banning, Era is essentially going to double the amount of attention each of their games get, by doubling the page counts because half will be people who post positive things about the game nonstop, and the other half will be people raising this AMA to derail the thread nonstop. All of this will end up being positive publicity for THQ, just like how people burning their Nike shoes and making videos of it was positive for Nike.

Where there should have been silence there will now be signal boosting for this company and it's products. I don't see how any game company, whose only goal is to increase value for shareholders, will not see this as a lesson to try this again or to do worse to one-up THQ in the future.

Because if no one makes a decent enough attempt at pushback, it's a huge advertising campaign.

Tons of people will have heard about certain specific things thanks to this. Like, I've learnt about a ton of upcoming THQ stuff because everyone's been talking about the company. And, in all honesty, I may well end up buying some of that stuff one day. Even if right now I decide that I'm not going to, people change. Boycotts don't hold forever.

The success of this move is entirely on how people react to it. It's why people are so frustrated by how relatively toothless the gaming media has been so far.

I don't live in Europe. So think I'm still good on most Sega games, and yes, I plan to avoid anything Deep Silver and Koch as well, if its released by them in the states.

If proper action is taken, like any other company would have after such an insane blunder, we would not be having this discussion.

This is not normal. has the age of Trump, Brexit and the Alt-right really numbed us this much?

If you don't feel that the mods are doing enough, then maybe a member initiative is worth considering. From an earlier staff post:

You are instead welcome to continue raising the issue in threads relevant to the publisher and its games. Disclaimers and boycotts as user driven initiatives are welcome as well.

If that's the case, then at the very least we can write up some warnings for us to copy and paste into any THQ Nordic topic where we note that company supported child porn and the people responsible for the initiative have not been penalized. If the OP doesn't do it themselves, someone else can do it. The moderation won't shut down the effort to keep this discussion from dying or side with the people who whine that they just want to talk about the games, will they?

The worst part about this entire fiasco is all the attention that cesspool of a website has managed to receive. Condolences to the people who visited it due to the AMA and were exposed to the dregs of humanity that fester over there.

Yeah I can see that. Fuck, I'm already pretty cynical but this cements it.

If there is anything I can be morally outraged about its literal, actual child porn. It'll make 0 difference but I personally won't buy THQ Nordic products until they actually do something. And I hope some game devs under them try to distance themselves at the very least.

How many other video game companies will follow suit with this style of marketing from now on? Probably a ton. Never thought I'd see the day...

Youtube giving easy access to kids videos for pedos is wrongand bad but posting and communicating with the audience of a child porn image board for marketing purposes is a good strategy apparently judging from the lukewarm response.

A member initiative seems like the best we are likely to get. Maybe in the form of a clear pre-written message users can copy paste into future threads.

If a mod doesn't want to take the extra step of banning anything, maybe mods can make those posts in future threads threadmarks at least.

I'm actually starting to feel there was a larger negative response in the gaming community to EA when they said if you don't like women playable characters, then don't play our games, then there has been to Publisher hosting an AMA on a site with kiddie porn as well as engaging in sexist and homophobic comments. Which tells you how bad the gaming community is.

So they really just gonna batten down the hatches and hope this blows over then?

Hopefully the majority of the games media will grow a spine and keep on their ass about this until something worthwhile is done... but god knows what they can do at this point.

How do you even salvage your company's reputation after this?

How about something like this:

_______________________________________________________________

This game is being published by THQ Nordic. For those who may not be aware or who may have forgotten, THQ Nordic had a marketing effort where it intended to gain attention using a website that is known primarily for its support of child pornography, as well as for support of Neo-Nazism, doxxing, and other extremely damaging behaviours.

THQ Nordic's provided no response to this fiasco except for an apology claiming they did not do enough research. As the website is unlisted by Google, they had spoken to the board owner about removing "nasty stuff", and content was viewable both before and during the campaign, this claim is beyond belief. The individuals responsible are known not to be rogue PR interns, but go up to THQ Nordic's board. THQ Nordic has not been dealt with the individuals responsible.

Consider that by supporting this game, you are supporting a publisher that is complicit with child pornography.

They're too busy complaining about how Momo is a conspiracy to demonetize YouTubers.
The sad part is, I can't tell if you're joking or not.

I know that Momo crap has seen a resurgence in the past few days because... "reasons" I guess, but are they really making videos about how it's a conspiracy to demonetize YouTubers?

If so... holy shit.

I know Yong "I'm outraged only when it fits my narrative and boosts my bank account" Yea hasn't said jack squat about this yet according to his recent uploads.

It is quite telling that Jim Sterling is one of the only big youtube gaming channels who has chosen to highlight the disgusting shitshow that is THQ nordic hosting a AMA on 8chan. Meanwhile all the usual suspects are too busy talking about lack of content in Anthem or FFXIV caving to SJW's or whatever the fuck they are all up in arms about. Boogie, Yongyea, HealsvsBabyface, Quartering etc etc....heck even Skillup who's reviews people have been praising in here only cares about EA ceo salary, and not that a publisher has helped promote a site known for CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
Imagine being this level of cunt.

Add swatting campaigns to the list and maybe a link to the more detailed summary and this is pretty good.

Why does the PR guy who thought this up still have a job? He should be fired like yesterday.

It wasn't just a PR guy. It had the approval of the entire department, and he was being backed up by Reinhard Pollice, Director of business and production development, shareholder of THQ Nordic AB, and one of the most powerful people at the company
